Abstract
We previously reported that phenyl- and vinyl-silsesquioxanes (SQs), [RSiO1.5]8,10,12 (R = Ph or vinyl) functionalized with three or more conjugated moieties show red-shifted absorption- and emission features suggesting 3-D conjugation via a cage centered LUMOs. Corner missing [PhSiO1.5]7(OSiMe3)3 and edge opened, end capped [PhSiO1.5]8(OSiMe2)2 (double decker, DD) analogs also offer red shifted spectra again indicating 3-D conjugation and a cage centered LUMO. Copolymerization of DD [PhSiO1.5]8(OSiMevinyl)2 with multiple R-Ar-Br gives copolymers with emission red-shifts that change with degree of polymerization (DP), exhibit charge transfer to F4TNCQ and terpolymer averaged red-shifts suggesting through chain conjugation even with two (O-Si-O) end caps possibly via a cage centered LUMO. Surprisingly, ladder (LL) SQ, (vinylMeSiO2)[PhSiO1.5]4(O2SiMevinyl) copolymers offer emission red-shifts even greater for analogous copolymers requiring a different explanation. Here we assess the photophysical behavior of copolymers of a more extreme SQ form: the half cage [PhSiO1.5]4(OSiMe2Vinyl)4, Vy4HC SQs. We again see small red-shifted absorptions coupled with significant red-shifted emissions, even with just a half cage, thus further supporting the existence of pπ-dπ and/or σ*-π* conjugation through Si-O-Si bonds and contrary to most traditional views of Si-O-Si linked polymers. These same copolymers donate an electron to F4TCNQ generating the radical anion, F4TCNQ-. as further proof of conjugation. Column chromatographic separation of short from longer chain oligomers reveals a direct correlation between DP and emission λmax red-shifts as another indication of conjugation. Further, one- and two-photon absorption and emission spectroscopy reveals multiple excited fluorescence-emitting states in a violation of Kasha's rule wherein emission occurs only from the lowest excited state. Traditional modeling studies again find HOMO LUMO energy levels residing only on the aromatic co-monomers rather than through Si-O-Si bonds as recently found in related polymers.

Abstract
Herein, we investigate the product type and distribution during the synthesis of azido-functionalized larger polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs) using 3-chloropropyl- and chloromethyldimethylsilylethyl-functionalized T8, T10, and T12 POSSs as precursors. Our findings indicate that cage rearrangement occurs for the 3-chloropropyl-functionalized POSS cages with a stability order of T12 > T10 > T8, while the chloromethyldimethylsilylethyl-functionalized POSS cages remain structurally intact after the nucleophilic substitution.

Abstract
Developing fluorescent chemosensors with sensitivity and high specificity for recognizing fluorides is still challenging. Herein, four innovative compounds based on 13-8-13-membered tricyclic ladder-type siloxanes hybridized with BINOLs (abbreviated as TLS-BINOLs) were prepared through the B(C6F5)3-catalyzed Piers-Rubinsztajn reaction. The well-defined ladder-type structure of the TLS-BINOLs was determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Additionally, the fluorescent sensing ability of the TLS-BINOLs toward anions was studied. Our finding revealed that all four ladder-type compounds (TLS-BINOLs) exhibited high specificity in recognizing fluorides through fluoride-triggered structural decomposition. The detection limits for fluorides were determined to be 0.37, 0.35, 0.39, and 0.48 μM for the respective TLS-BINOLs. The nonemissive product induced by the fluorides was also determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract
This paper describes the author's recent work on the preparation and properties of thermally stable ionic liquids (ILs) containing siloxane frameworks. Quaternary ammonium and imidazolium salt-type ILs containing random oligosilsesquioxane frameworks were successfully prepared via the hydrolytic condensation of the corresponding organotrialkoxysilanes by using an aqueous superacid bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (HNTf2 ) solution as a catalyst and solvent. Imidazolium salt-type ILs containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) frameworks were also prepared through a reaction similar to that described above by using a water/methanol mixed solution of HNTf2 . In addition, amorphous POSSs with two types of ionic groups randomly distributed in the side chain were prepared. These POSSs were ILs exhibiting fluidity at relatively low temperatures. Furthermore, imidazolium and ammonium salt-type ILs containing cyclic oligosiloxane frameworks were prepared through a reaction similar to that of the corresponding organodialkoxysilanes. The thermal decomposition temperatures of the above ILs containing siloxane frameworks were higher than those of general ILs.

Abstract
The synthesis of four novel syn-type tricyclic laddersiloxanes bearing eight or six alkenyl groups is presented. These compounds possess reactive alkenyl groups on both the bridged and side silicon atoms, and their structures were determined through characterization using multinuclear 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis techniques. To investigate their reactivity, the compounds were subjected to hydrosilylation using two different silanes, and the resulting fully hydrosilylated compounds were thoroughly analyzed. Remarkably, all the synthesized laddersiloxanes displayed high thermal stability, suggesting their potential as promising precursors for the development of new hybrid materials. Additionally, preliminary findings indicate the possibility of exploiting the reactivity difference between the alkenyl groups attached to the D- and T-unit silicon atoms for the synthesis of Janus molecules. These findings highlight the potential of the reported compounds as valuable building blocks in the construction of innovative materials.

Abstract
Tetrachloro- and tetraazide-substituted all-cis-tetraphenylcyclotetrasiloxanes (all-cis-T4) 2 and 3 were synthesized in high yields and were fully characterized. Then the precursor 3 underwent CuAAC click reaction with monopropargyl BINOL 4 and dipropargyl BINOL 6 to give the novel BINOL and triazole-containing all-cis-T4 cyclic siloxane 5 and the 29-8-29-membered-ring ladder-type hybrid siloxane 7. The sensing ability of compounds 5 and 7 towards anions was studied as well, and it was observed that 7 could selectively recognize iodides through synergistic C-H⋯I hydrogen bonding, resulting in an impressive fluorescence quenching with a Ksv of 8.10 × 104 M-1.

Abstract
The abundance of CO2 from the cement industry, power generation, petroleum production, and combustion of biomass makes it a readily available feedstock to produce chemicals and materials, although it has yet to achieve optimal development. Even though syngas (CO + H2) hydrogenation to methanol is an established industrial process, when the same catalytic system based on Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 is employed with CO2, the water formed as a byproduct reduces the activity, stability, and selectivity of the process. Here, we explored the potential of phenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) as a hydrophobic support of Cu/ZnO for direct CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Mild calcination of the copper-zinc-impregnated POSS material affords the formation of CuZn-POSS nanoparticles with Cu and ZnO homogeneously dispersed with an average particle size of 7 and 15 nm supported on O-POSS and D-POSS, respectively. The composite supported on D-POSS was able to reach a 3.8% yield of methanol with a 4.4% of CO2 conversion and with selectivity as high as 87.5% within 18 h. The structural investigation of the catalytic system reveals that CuO/ZnO are electron withdrawers in the presence of the siloxane cage of POSS. The catalytic system metal-POSS is stable and recyclable under H2 reduction and CO2/H2 conditions. We tested the use of microbatch reactors in heterogeneous reactions as a rapid and effective tool for catalyst screening. The increased number of phenyls in the structure of POSS results in an increased hydrophobic character that plays a decisive role in the methanol formation after comparison with CuO/ZnO supported on reduced graphene oxide with 0% selectivity to methanol under the study conditions. The materials were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area analysis, contact angle, and thermogravimetry. The gaseous products were characterized by gas chromatography coupled with thermal conductivity detectors and flame ionization detectors.

Abstract
Covalent grafting of dielectric films containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) on the surface of Cu(111) is performed by a one-step electrochemical reduction of diazonium salts. This method is efficient and economic and performs in a proton-polar solvent of deionized water and tetrahydrofuran (THF), where the monomer employs an octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS) containing a POSS core. The eight vinyl bonds contained in OVS are used to participate in aryl radical-initiated polymerization reactions to form films. The formed film is dense and covers the copper surface completely and uniformly. The thickness of the film can be controlled by adjusting the reaction time. The components of the films are mainly polynitrophenyl (PNP) or polyaminophenyl (PAP) as well as poly(octavinylsilsesquioxane) (POVS), and the POVS content could be adjusted by the applied voltage. The introduction of POSS prevents the copper surface from being oxidized and often gives the film good properties such as good dielectric properties, mechanical properties, and thermal properties. In addition, the presence of Cu-O-C and Cu-C bonds between the film and copper interface is confirmed at different film thicknesses by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which allowed the construction of covalent bonds between metal and nonmetal, further enhancing the bonding between the film and copper. Organic films prepared by electrochemical reduction of diazonium salts using OVS as a monomer will have potential significance for the future development of the electronics industry.

Abstract
This work illustrates the potential of using atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) and grand-canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations prior to experiments in order to pre-screen candidate membrane structures for gas separation, under harsh conditions of temperature and pressure. It compares at 300 °C and 400 °C the CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 sieving properties of a series of hybrid networks based on inorganic silsesquioxanes hyper-cross-linked with small organic PMDA or 6FDA imides. The inorganic precursors are the octa(aminopropyl)silsesquioxane (POSS), which degrades above 300 °C, and the octa(aminophenyl)silsesquioxane (OAPS), which has three possible meta, para or ortho isomers and is expected to resist well above 400 °C. As such, the polyPOSS-imide networks were tested at 300 °C only, while the polyOAPS-imide networks were tested at both 300 °C and 400 °C. The feed gas pressure was set to 60 bar in all the simulations. The morphologies and densities of the pure model networks at 300 °C and 400 °C are strongly dependent on their precursors, with the amount of significant free volume ranging from ~2% to ~20%. Since measurements at high temperatures and pressures are difficult to carry out in a laboratory, six isomer-specific polyOAPS-imides and two polyPOSS-imides were simulated in order to assess their N2, CH4 and CO2 permselectivities under such harsh conditions. The models were first analyzed under single-gas conditions, but to be closer to the real processes, the networks that maintained CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 ideal permselectivities above 2 were also tested with binary-gas 90%/10% CH4/CO2 and N2/CO2 feeds. At very high temperatures, the single-gas solubility coefficients vary in the same order as their critical temperatures, but the differences between the penetrants are attenuated and the plasticizing effect of CO2 is strongly reduced. The single-gas diffusion coefficients correlate well with the amount of available free volume in the matrices. Some OAPS-based networks exhibit a nanoporous behavior, while the others are less permeable and show higher ideal permselectivities. Four of the networks were further tested under mixed-gas conditions. The solubility coefficient improved for CO2, while the diffusion selectivity remained similar for the CO2/CH4 pair and disappeared for the CO2/N2 pair. The real separation factor is, thus, mostly governed by the solubility. Two polyOAPS-imide networks, i.e., the polyorthoOAPS-PMDA and the polymetaOAPS-6FDA, seem to be able to maintain their CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 sieving abilities above 2 at 400 °C. These are outstanding performances for polymer-based membranes, and consequently, it is important to be able to produce isomer-specific polyOAPS-imides for use as gas separation membranes under harsh conditions.

Abstract
Cyclic silanol derivatives (CSDs), possessing siloxane rings consisting of T-unit silicon and oxygen atoms, are considered efficient precursors for the preparation of versatile well-defined building blocks of hybrid materials such as cyclic, cage- or ladder-type SQs. This review provides an outline of the main synthetic routes to numerous stereoregular CSDs with different sizes of siloxane rings since the first example of CSDs reported by Brown et al. in 1965. The typical reaction conditions and chemical shifts of 29Si NMR of all mentioned CSDs in this review are summarized in tables and schemes to recapitulate the state of the art. The synthesis of all-cis-cyclotetrasiloxanes (T4), the most investigated CSDs, and their functionalization by different organic reactions to access various all-cis-T4 with functional groups are methodically presented. Moreover, the potential of CSDs in multiple application fields is discussed to show the possible research directions of this family of compounds in the future.

Abstract
Glass transition temperature (T g) always deteriorates while improving the strength of epoxy resins which inherently suffer from brittleness. Herein, novel linear polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-epoxy nano-modifiers are synthesized with variable contents of POSS. The thermomechanical properties and chemical structure study of the POSS-epoxy indicates significant differences of the rigid POSS content in the linear nano-modifiers. By taking advantage of the synergistic effect of nanofillers and linear polymers, the modifiers disperse at the molecular level when POSS-epoxy is utilized as a co-curing agent for epoxy resins, allowing the applied force to be transferred into the polymer matrix. A good balance of T g, stiffness, and fracture toughness can be obtained. At 5 wt% of the nano-modifier, the resultant epoxy resins showed 27% enhancement in the Young's modulus relative to the neat epoxy. In addition, the T g and strength of epoxy thermosets are improved due to the increased cross-linking density, rough surface and tortuous path that resulted in good dispersion of energy during crack propagation.

Abstract
Unprecedented T8-cages bearing eight chloromethyldimethylsilylethyl substituents were obtained in excellent yield from the readily and commercially available octavinylsilsesquioxane. The chloro groups can be quantitatively substituted by azido ones to yield the corresponding octaazido T8 without rearrangement of the cage. The syntheses of both functionalizable POSSs are scalable (gram-scale). The azido-functionalized T8 compound constitutes a versatile building block able to undergo copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne [3 + 2] cycloaddition. As a proof of concept, it was allowed to react with 2-ethynylpyridine to give rise to a multidentate ligand bearing eight 2-pyridyl-triazole moieties (N,N-pincers). The coordination of the eight N,N-bidentate ligands to palladium(II) led to the corresponding octa-palladium complex shown to successfully promote the coupling reaction between anisole and phenylboronic acid. The low solubility of this catalytic complex in the reaction medium enabled (or facilitated or made possible) its straightforward recovery and recycling with four cycles with no loss of activity.

Abstract
In this study, we prepared a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-linking polyamide (POSS polyamide) by a polycondensation of ammonium-functionalized POSS (POSS-A) and carboxyl-functionalized POSS (POSS-C) in dehydrated dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) using 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) as condensing agents. The obtained POSS polyamide was soluble in various highly polar solvents, and it could form a self-standing film. FT-IR, 1H NMR, and 29Si NMR analyses showed that POSS polyamide is a polymer in which POSS-A and POSS-C are linked almost linearly by amide bonds. Furthermore, the cast film obtained by heat-treating the polymer at 150 °C for 30 min exhibited excellent transparency and hard-coating (pencil scratch test: 5H) and antifogging properties (evaluation by water vapor exposure).

Abstract
A new family of hybrid hyper-cross-linked thin films based on inorganic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) cages covalently bound with short organic imides has recently been developed using interfacial polycondensation followed by high-temperature imidization. These polyPOSS-imide networks were aimed at gas separations under harsh conditions, but the aliphatic arms of the initial POSS precursor, octa(aminopropyl)silsesquioxane, were found to be a weak link. This work investigates the replacement of the aliphatic arm by a phenyl derivative, octa(aminophenyl)silsesquioxane (OAPS). Although this new precursor is expected to be more thermoresistant, it introduces extra degrees of complexity since the functional -NH2 group on the phenyl ring can either be attached at a meta, a para or an ortho position. In order to avoid a costly programme of synthesis and testing, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been used to efficiently screen a large number of candidate structures based on mixtures of the three OAPS isomers, the initial POSS and three organic precursors, the PMDA, 6FDA and ODPA dianhydrides. Following cross-linking at room temperature, twenty-two model networks were further relaxed at the imidization temperature and directly tested under harsh conditions at 300 °C. The screening stage included the characterization of their intercage single-links and double-links, which reinforce the structures, and intracage links, which have the opposite effect. Carrying out the cross-linking reactions to completion significantly improved the resistance to isotropic dilation. The initial POSS as well as the flexible 6FDA and ODPA linkers were found to be prone to large deformations, whereas the orthoOAPS, metaOAPS, paraOAPS and the PMDA linker prevented volume dilations. Upon uniaxial tension, the Young's moduli varied in the order paraOAPS < POSS ≈ metaOAPS < orthoOAPS for the inorganic precursors and in the order 6FDA < ODPA < PMDA for the organic precursors. In all cases, the networks based on either orthoOAPS and/or PMDA displayed superior resistance. Nine polyOAPS-imides were further heated up to 400 °C, i.e. closer to the expected degradation, and re-submitted to isotropic dilations and uniaxial tensions. They confirmed the trends found at 300 °C with no signs of structural collapse. Using OAPS as the inorganic precursor thus significantly reinforces the thermoresistance of these hybrid hyper-cross-linked networks.

Abstract
Hydrophobic films are widely used in aerospace, military weapons, high-rise building exterior glass, and non-destructive pipeline transportation due to their antifouling and self-cleaning properties. This paper details the successful preparation of hydrophobic epoxy caged sesquioxane (EP-POSS) via two steps of simple organic synthesis, along with studies on the effects of viscosity and reaction time on the reaction. Interestingly, the EP-POSS presented a large contact angle of 125°, indicating its excellent hydrophobicity. The surface micromorphology was observed via FE-SEM (field emission scanning electron microscopy), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the structural composition and elemental contents were analyzed via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests showed that EP-POSS had excellent thermal properties, and the first degradation reaction occurred at 354 °C. The mechanical performance and abrasion resistance results demonstrated that EP-POSS could be used in solar panels.

Abstract
Transition metal (Co or Fe) containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane complexes (M@POSS-COOH) were prepared from octa carboxyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OC-POSS). The structures of OC-POSS and M@POSS-COOH were characterized by FT-IR, NMR, MALDI-TOF MS and XRD. Fe@POSS-COOH and Co@POSS-COOH possess mesoporous structures, whose Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas (SBET) are 58.7 m2/g and 46.3 m2/g, respectively. The remaining carboxyl groups of M@POSS-COOH that can react with epoxy groups along with the mesoporous structure increase the network strength of the epoxy resin (EP), and play a significant role in improving the mechanical properties, dielectric properties and thermal properties of the composites. Furthermore, the elemental composition of transition metal and silicon oxygen in the M@POSS-COOH structures significantly increases the amount of char residues of EP composites during the combustion of the material through elements catalysis and surface enrichment, which significantly reduces the toxic smoke density and fire hazards of EP composites. The structural and elemental merits of M@POSS-COOH significantly improve the overall performance of epoxy resin and occupy broad application space.

Abstract
The review describes the synthesis and properties of various forms of polyphenylsilsesquioxane (PPSQ). Among the forms described, we present the well-known ladder (l-PPSQ) and polyhedral (p-PPSQ) forms, from the first studies to the latest achievements. The practical prospects of these compounds and the possibility of their modification are estimated. These PPSQ have a regular polycyclic structure, which allowed us to compare them with random polycyclic analogs (r-PPSQ). The last part of the review describes the acyclic PPSQ (a-PPSQ) obtained recently. The methods for their synthesis and modification are presented. Modification of (a-PPSQ) allows two new forms of PPSQ to be obtained. The first one is a hyperbranched PPSQ. The second one is a globular PPSQ or a nanogel as it is called by the authors. Both forms are of great interest because their physicochemical properties differ greatly from the known ones (l-PPSQ, p-PPSQ, r-PPSQ). The areas of practical application of the new PPSQ forms are predicted. The review describes the synthesis and properties of various forms of polyphenylsilsesquioxane (PPSQ).![]()

Abstract
A series of innovative thermosetting polymer nanocomposites comprising of polysiloxane-imide-containing benzoxazine (PSiBZ) as the matrix and double-decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) epoxy or polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) epoxy were prepared for improving thermosetting performance. Thermomechanical and dynamic mechanical characterizations indicated that both DDSQ and POSS could effectively lower the coefficient of thermal expansion by up to approximately 34% and considerably increase the storage modulus (up to 183%). Therefore, DDSQ and POSS are promising materials for low-stress encapsulation for electronic packaging applications.

Abstract
A convenient and scalable (gram-scale) route to unprecedented T8D2-double-decker siloxanes (DDSQs) bearing four chloro (3b) or four azido (5b) groups is reported. Both compounds were characterized and proved to undergo successful nucleophilic substitution for 3b (with iodide or azide) and copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne [3 + 2] cycloaddition for 5b. All of these transformations occurred under mild conditions, and the corresponding DDSQs were prepared in very high yields. Beyond the enhanced multivalency as compared to the previously described disubstituted D2T8 structures, the reported tetrafunctional DDSQs are formed as a single isomer and readily isolated in very high yields. Moreover, the tetra-azido DDSQ 5b constitutes a multipurpose nanobuilding block for the further preparation of new inorganic-organic hybrid materials where the covalent incorporation of a DDSQ moiety brings valuable properties.

Abstract
In this paper we present the synthesis of mixed bifunctional compounds of T8 H8 silsesquioxane and spherosilicate (HSiMe2 O)8 Si8 O12 derivatives via platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation of alkenylgermanes and olefins. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first literature example of bifunctional compounds with organogermyl functionalities. Eleven mixed systems with a variety of substituents (Si-H, alkyl, germyl, epoxy, and hydroxy) were prepared and fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy. Additionally, our research includes a real-time FT-IR study of the synthesis of these bifunctional compounds of the general formula (R)8-m (GeR'3 (CH2 )n+2 R)m Si8 O12 . and (R''(CH2 )2 R)8-m (GeR'3 (CH2 )2 R)m Si8 O12 where m∼4.

Abstract
![]()
Herein, we report
an efficient synthesis and functionalization
of trifunctional open-cage-type silsesquioxanes. The method proposed
has been successfully applied for the synthesis of a library of incompletely
condensed silsesquioxanes with vinyldiorganosilyl functional groups,
which allows further modification. Detailed studies of hydrosilylation
of sterically different open-cage vinylsilsesquioxanes with a wide
spectrum of phenylsilanes catalyzed by platinum and rhodium compounds
are also reported. The influence of the reaction parameters, types
of reagents, and catalysts employed on the efficiency of the process
was examined. Optimization of the process based on the above results
permitted the design of a very attractive method for the synthesis
of multifunctionalized silsesquioxanes with excellent yields and regioselectivity.
Moreover, the results allowed the choice of the most efficient catalyst
whose application led to the selective formation of substituted open-cage
silsesquioxanes. These new compounds have been fully characterized
and studied in terms of their thermal properties. The first example of a fully specified synthetic protocol
allowing selective modification of trivinyl-substituted open-cage
silsesquioxanes with silanes via platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation
is presented.

Abstract
High boron content systems were prepared by the peripheral functionalisation of 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene (TPB) and octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS) with two different anionic boron clusters: closo-dodecaborate (B12) and cobaltabisdicarbollide (COSAN). TPB was successfully decorated with three cluster units by an oxonium ring-opening reaction, while OVS was bonded to eight clusters by catalysed metathesis cross-coupling. The resulting compounds were spectroscopically characterised, and their solution-state photophysical properties analysed. For TPB, the presence of COSAN dramatically quenches the fluorescence emission (λem = 369 nm; ΦF = 0.8%), while B12-substituted TPB shows an appreciable emission efficiency (λem = 394 nm; ΦF = 12.8%). For octasilsesquioxanes, the presence of either COSAN or B12 seems to be responsible for ∼80 nm bathochromic shift with respect to the core emission, but both cases show low emission fluorescence (ΦF = 1.4-1.8%). In addition, a remarkable improvement of the thermal stability of OVS was observed after its functionalisation with these boron clusters.

Control of Crystalline-Amorphous Structures of Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes Containing Two Types of Ammonium Side-Chain Groups and Their Properties as Protic Ionic Liquids. Molecules 2019; 24:molecules24244553. Abstract
Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs), Am-POSS(x,y), prepared by hydrolytic condensation, contains two types of ammonium side-chain groups, where the numbering of x and y represents the type of ammonium ions in the POSS structure, corresponding to primary (1), secondary (2), tertiary (3), and quaternary (4) ammonium ions. Mixtures of the two starting materials selected from organotrialkoxysilanes containing primary, secondary, and tertiary amines and a quaternary ammonium salt [(RO)3Si(CH2)3R′, R = CH3 or CH2CH3, R′ = NH2, NHCH3, N(CH3)2, and N(CH3)3Cl] were dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The hydrolytic condensation was performed in the presence of bis(trifluoromethansulfonyl)imide (HNTf2) and water. All Am-POSS(x,y) structures consisted of a cage-type octamer (T8-POSS), as confirmed by 29Si NMR spectrometry and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses indicated that Am-POSS(1,3), Am-POSS(1,4), and Am-POSS(2,4) had amorphous structures. These POSSs have two or three differences in the number of methyl groups between the two types of ammonium side-chains. Conversely, Am-POSS(1,2), Am-POSS(2,3), and Am-POSS(3,4) had crystalline structures. The difference in the number of methyl groups between the two types of ammonium side-chains in these POSSs is only one. Therefore, the crystalline-amorphous structure of Am-POSS(x,y) is controlled by the side-chain group combinations. Furthermore, Am-POSS(1,3), Am-POSS(1,4), and Am-POSS(2,4) are protic ionic liquids with relatively low flow temperatures.

Abstract
Abstract
The “greening” of silicon chemistry is fundamentally important for the future of the field. Traditional methods used to make silicon-based materials rely on carbon rich processes that are highly energy intensive, cause pollution, and are unsustainable. Researchers have taken up the challenge of developing new chemistries to circumvent the difficulties associated with traditional silicon material synthesis. Most of this work has been in the conversion of the “green” carbon neutral biogenic silica source rice hull ash (RHA, ~85 % silica) into useful silicon building blocks such as silica’s, silicon, and alkoxysilanes by using the inherently higher surface area and reactivity of RHA to sidestep the low reactivity of mined silica sources. This is a review of the work that has been done in the area of developing more environmentally benign methods for the synthesis and use of silicon containing materials to eliminate the negative impact on the environment.

Abstract
A simple and highly practical catalyst-free O-silylation of silanols with commercially available disilazanes has been developed under mild conditions. In the case of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) silanols and some other silanols, it was necessary to use catalytic amounts of inexpensive Bi(OTf)3 as additional catalyst. This efficient chlorine-free protocol involves the synthesis of a wide range of important organosilicon derivatives such as unsymmetrical disiloxanes and functionalized silsesquioxanes.
