Abstract
AbstractIt is of scientific and practical significance to sense and to remove heavy metal ions in the environment. In this work, four BODIPY-based fluorescent polymeric probes with the ability to sense and separate Fe3+ ions have been prepared via thiol-ene click reaction. The polymers have good thermal stability. Meanwhile, the results show that they have selective recognition capabilities only for Fe3+, which are mainly manifested as significant quenching of fluorescence and color modulation under visible light. The sensitivity is good, and the limit of detection reaches as low as 0.14 µM. They can also be used as reversible chemical probes to detect Fe3+. Therefore, the click reaction provides us with a facile method for preparing fluorescent polymer probes.

Abstract
Nowadays, the development of synthetic methods regarding the fabrication of -SH containing organic coatings continues to attract a considerable attention. Among the potential techniques, the plasma polymerization appears as one of the most promising method but the difficulty to control the chemical composition of the layers is highly limiting. In this context, in this work, we report on an original method combining dry and wet chemistry approaches in view of selectively incorporating -SH functions in organic coatings. Our strategy is based on the (i) synthesis of a bromine-containing plasma polymer film, followed by (ii) a selective grafting of dithiol-based molecule on C-Br bond. Investigating the plasma polymerization process has revealed that, in our experimental window, the load of energy in the discharge has little influence on the chemical composition as well as on the cross-linking degree of the layers. This behavior is explained by considering the concomitant influence of the gas-phase reactions and the supply of energy to the growing film through ion bombardment. With regard to the functionalization strategy, based on comparative X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, it has been unambiguously demonstrated that a selective reaction between propanedithiol and the C-Br bond acting as the reactive center takes place resulting in the removing of the bromine atom and the incorporation of -SH groups in the PPF. Depending on the grafting reaction duration, the relative proportion of carbon bearing the -SH group is found to evolve from 4 to 6%. On the other hand, the dissolution of unbounded bromine-based species in the liquid medium during the grafting procedure is also evidenced. The whole set of our results clearly demonstrates the attractiveness of our strategy paving the way for new development in the fabrication of -SH-rich-containing organic thin films.

Abstract
Nondestructive flaw detection in polymeric materials is important but difficult to achieve. In this research, the application of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) in nondestructive flaw detection is studied and realized, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time. Superparamagnetic and highly magnetic (up to 63 emu/g) magnetite core-shell nanoparticles are prepared by grafting bromo-end-group-functionalized poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (Br-PGMA) onto surface-modified Fe3O4 NPs. These Fe3O4-PGMA NPs are blended into bisphenol A diglycidylether (BADGE)-based epoxy to form homogeneously distributed magnetic epoxy nanocomposites (MENCs) after curing. The core Fe3O4 of the Fe3O4-PGMA NPs endows the MENCs with magnetic property, which is crucial for nondestructive flaw detection of the materials, while the shell PGMA promotes colloidal stability and prevents NP aggregation during curing. The eddy current testing (ET) technique is first applied to detect flaws in the MENCs. Through the brightness contrast of the ET image, surficial and subsurficial flaws in MENCs can be detected, even for MENCs with low content of Fe3O4-PGMA NPs (1 wt %). The incorporation of Fe3O4-PGMA NPs can be easily extended to other polymer and polymer-based composite systems and opens a new and very promising pathway toward MNP-based nondestructive flaw detection in polymeric materials.

Abstract
In this work, a simple one-step method is first employed to produce the bromoisobutyryl-terminated 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD-Br). The pendant epoxy groups of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) block prepared via ATRP from HPCD-Br can be reacted with ethanolamine to produce HPCD-PGEA which exhibits much lower cytotoxicity and better gene transfection yield than polyethylenimine (25 kDa) in COS7 and HepG2 cell lines. Moreover, poly((2-dimethyl amino)ethyl methacrylate) blocks can be incorporated into low-molecular-weight HPCD-PGEA via "click" reaction to further enhance the gene transfection efficiency in HepG2 cell lines.

Abstract
Poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) macromonomers have been prepared by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) using a bifunctional disulfide-based initiator. To attach a terminal polymerizable methacrylate group, the central disulfide bond was cleaved and the resulting thiols were conjugated to 3-(acryloyloxy)-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate using tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine (TCEP) in water. Here TCEP serves as both the disulfide cleavage agent and also the catalyst for the subsequent Michael addition, which is highly selective for the acrylate group. The resulting methacrylate-terminated macromonomers were used as a reactive steric stabilizer for the aqueous emulsion polymerization of styrene, yielding near-monodisperse PMPC-stabilized polystyrene (PS) latexes of around 100-200 nm in diameter. As a comparison, the disulfide-containing PMPC homopolymer precursor and the intermediate thiol-functional PMPC homopolymer (PMPC-SH) were also evaluated as potential steric stabilizers. Interestingly, near-monodisperse latexes were also obtained in each case. These three sterically-stabilized latexes, prepared using either PMPC macromonomer, disulfide-based PMPC homopolymer, or PMPC-SH homopolymer as a reactive steric stabilizer, remained colloidally stable after both freeze-thaw experiments and the addition of an electrolyte, indicating that a coronal layer of PMPC chains prevented flocculation in each case. In contrast, both a charge-stabilized PS latex prepared in the absence of any steric stabilizer and a PS latex prepared in the presence of a nonfunctional PMPC homopolymer exhibited very poor colloidal stability when subjected to a freeze-thaw cycle or the addition of an electrolyte, as expected.
