A Low-Bandgap Conjugated Polymer Based on Squaraine with Strong Two-Photon Absorption

Precise Stepwise Synthesis of Donor-Acceptor Conjugated Polymer Brushes Grafted from Surfaces

Donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers are promising materials in optoelectronic applications, especially those forming ordered thin films. The processability of such conjugated macromolecules is typically enhanced by introducing bulky side chains, but it may affect their ordering and/or photophysical properties of the films. We show here the synthesis of surface-grafted D-A polymer brushes using alternating attachment of tailored monomers serving as electron donors (D) and acceptors (A) via coupling reactions. In such a stepwise procedure, alternating copolymer brushes consisting of thiophene and benzothiadiazole-based moieties with precisely tailored thickness and no bulky substituents were formed. The utilization of Sonogashira coupling was shown to produce densely packed molecular wires of tailored thickness, while Stille coupling and Huisgen cycloaddition were less efficient, likely because of the higher flexibility of D-A bridging groups. The D-A brushes exhibit reduced bandgaps, semiconducting properties and can form aggregates, which can be adjusted by changing the grafting density of the chains.

Recent Progress of Squaraine-Based Fluorescent Materials and Their Biomedical Applications

Squaraines (SQs) are unusual cyanine dyes with a unique resonance-stabilized zwitterionic structure. These dyes have attracted significant attention in the fields of organic electronics and organic photonics, due to their facile synthesis, intense and narrow visible and near-infrared absorption/emission, high photostability, low biotoxicity, etc. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of SQ-based fluorescent materials and their biomedical applications. After a brief introduction to SQs, general synthetic routes and design principles of SQ-based fluorescent materials, as well as their aggregation-induced luminescence behaviors, are discussed. Subsequently, their biomedical applications for cell imaging and as fluorescent sensors and therapeutic agents are introduced. Finally, a summary and perspective are given for promoting the development of SQs-based fluorescent materials.

Azulene-Containing Squaraines for Photoacoustic Imaging and Photothermal Therapy

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) guided photothermal therapy (PTT) can realize real-time diagnosis and in situ treatment of cancer at the same time. Absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) region with large molar extinction coefficient (ε) and high value of photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) are key prerequisites for photothermal agents (PTAs) to realize dual PAI and PTT treatments. Squaraines have stable quinoid structures with strong planarity and rigidity, in favor of the NIR absorption and high ε values. On the other hand, azulene derivatives mostly have very faint fluorescence emission, which is beneficial for photothermal transformation. Herein, two azulene-containing squaraines Az-SQ-1 and Az-SQ-2 are synthesized as high-performance PTAs. In comparison with Az-SQ-1, Az-SQ-2 possesses larger ε_max of 3 × 10⁵ M^-1 cm^-1 at 780 nm in organic solution and higher PCE of 53.2% in the form of nanoparticles under 808 nm laser irradiation. Accordingly, Az-SQ-2 NPs present stronger photoacoustic signals (about 15.1-times the background signal) and more efficient suppression of tumor growth. Our research indicates that the introduction of azulene unit to traditional NIR dyes is a simple but effective approach to obtain outstanding PTAs in the aspect of phototheranostics.

Near-infrared dyes for two-photon absorption in the short-wavelength infrared: strategies towards optical power limiting

The recent advances in the field of two-photon absorbing chromophores in the short-wavelength infrared spectral range (SWIR 1100–2500 nm) are summarized, highlighting the development of optical power limiting devices in this spectral range.

Potential Use of Squarates and Croconates as Singlet Fission Sensitizers

The geometrical and electronic structures of 44 squarate and croconate derivatives are computationally studied by quantum chemistry methods, in the pursuit of new singlet fission sensitizers. A non-negligible singlet open-shell diradical character is observed for most of the studied molecules, which can be controlled through chemical substitution as well as by the size of the central ring. Such a diradical character is related to small singlet-triplet energy gaps, facilitating the accomplishment of the singlet fission energetic requirements. In general, the present results indicate that squarates hold superior singlet fission capabilities than croconates, although we have identified several derivatives within both families as promising singlet fission sensitizers.
