Stereoregularity of Poly(lactic acid) and their Model Compounds as studied by NMR and Quantum Chemical Calculations

Chain heterogeneity of poly(lactic acid) and its influence on crystallization kinetics

Temperature rising elution fractionation (TREF) approach was used to separate a biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) resin into ten fractions and completely establish the relationship between chain microstructure and properties. The main fractions were mainly eluted at 100, 110, 114, and 118 °C, and their mass percentages were 7.98 wt%, 44.83 wt%, 19.64 wt%, and 11.90 wt%, respectively. Through the use of successive self-nucleation/annealing (SSA) thermal fractionation, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C NMR), the intermolecular and intramolecular differences of PLA were further explored. Fractions eluted at 90, 110, 118, and 126 °C were also chosen to research the non-isothermal cold crystallization kinetics, and fractions eluted at 110, 118, and 126 °C were chosen to explore the non-isothermal crystallization kinetics in order to simulate the real process. The findings demonstrated that the Liu-Mo approach were more suited the non-isothermal crystallization and non-isothermal cold crystallization kinetics of PLA. As the elution temperature increased, so did the stereoregularity of the fractions, the crystallization rate, the crystallization capacity, and the lamellar thickness. These will lay a foundation for its basic research and industrial application.

NMR Analyses and Statistical Modeling of Biobased Polymer Microstructures-A Selected Review

NMR analysis combined with statistical modeling offers a useful approach to investigate the microstructures of polymers. This article provides a selective review of the developments in both the NMR analysis of biobased polymers and the statistical models that can be used to characterize these materials. The information obtained from NMR and statistical models can provide insights into the microstructure and stereochemistry of appropriate biobased polymers and establish a systematic approach to their analysis. In suitable cases, the analysis can help optimize the synthetic procedures and facilitate the development of new or modified polymeric materials for various applications. Examples are given of the studies of poly(hydroxyalkanoates), poly(lactic acid), and selected polysaccharides, e.g., alginate, pectin, and chitosan. This article may serve as both a reference and a guide for future workers interested in the NMR sequence analysis of biobased materials.

Nondestructive Sequencing of Enantiopure Oligoesters by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Sequence-defined synthetic oligomers and polymers are promising molecular media for permanently storing digital information. However, the information decoding process relies on degradative sequencing methods such as mass spectrometry, which consumes the information-storing polymers upon decoding. Here, we demonstrate the nondestructive decoding of sequence-defined oligomers of enantiopure α-hydroxy acids, oligo(l-mandelic-co-d-phenyl lactic acid)s (oMPs), and oligo(l-lactic-co-glycolic acid)s (oLGs) by 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We were able to nondestructively decode a bitmap image (192 bits) encoded using a library of 12 equimolar mixtures of an 8-bit-storing oMP and oLG, synthesized through semiautomated flow chemistry in less than 1% of the reaction time required for the repetition of conventional batch reactions. Our results highlight the potential of bundles of sequence-defined oligomers as efficient media for encoding and decoding large-scale information based on the automation of their synthesis and nondestructive sequencing processes.

NMR Analysis of Poly(Lactic Acid) via Statistical Models

The physical properties of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) are influenced by its stereoregularity and stereosequence distribution, and its polymer stereochemistry can be effectively studied by NMR spectroscopy. In previously published NMR studies of PLA tacticity, the NMR data were fitted to pair-addition Bernoullian models. In this work, we prepared several PLA samples with a tin catalyst at different L,L-lactide and D,D-lactide ratios. Upon analysis of the tetrad intensities with the pair-addition Bernoullian model, we found substantial deviations between observed and calculated intensities due to the presence of transesterification and racemization during the polymerization processes. We formulated a two-state (pair-addition Bernoullian and single-addition Bernoullian) model, and it gave a better fit to the observed data. The use of the two-state model provides a quantitative measure of the extent of transesterification and racemization, and potentially yields useful information on the polymerization mechanism.
