Abstract
Chromium-based catalysts play a significant role in the production of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, and half-sandwich functionalised-metallocene complexes were proven to be one of the most suitable candidates as catalysts for generating such large polymeric-length olefins. Earlier experimental studies on olefin polymerisation using a series of catalysts such as [L1-2CrCl2] (where L1 = 1-((pyridin-2-yl)methyl)indenyl (1) and L2 = 2-methyl-1-{[4-(yridinene-1-yl)yridine-2-yl]methyl}-1H-indenyl (2)) reveal significant variation where peripheral substitution on the ligand was found to influence the reactivity significantly. However, the specific ligand position that affects the reactivity has not been established. As these reactions are fast and robust, it is challenging to establish reactive intermediates via experiments, and therefore, mechanistic clues for such reactions are elusive. Here we have undertaken a detailed computational study by employing an array of DFT (uB3LYP-D3/def2-TZVP, CASSCF/NEVPT2, and DLPNO-CCSD(T) methods to explore the substituted and non-substituted pyridine-cyclo-pentadienyl chromium complexes and their influence on the catalytic activity in ethylene polymerisation. Our study not only unravels the catalytic pathway for olefin polymerisation for such Cr(III)-half-sandwich complexes but also reveals that the energetics of the formation of pseudo-three-coordinate alkyl intermediates is key to the variation in the reactivity observed. A detailed examination using MO and NBO analysis unveils the presence of a C-H⋯Cr agostic interaction that is found to significantly stabilise this intermediate when the pyridine ligand has strong electron-donating groups at its para position. The other substitutions, such as on the cyclopentadienyl ligand, neither yield the desired stability nor the desired interaction. Further studies on models support this proposal. In order to improve the efficiency and selectivity of catalytic systems in olefin polymerisation, we strongly advocate for the integration of agostic interactions as a crucial criterion in the design of future catalysts. Considering the prevalence of electron-deficient metal centres in successful olefin polymerisation catalysts, this research prompts a broader mechanistic inquiry to propose a unified approach for this industrially crucial reaction.

Abstract
Ferrate(VI) (Fe(VI)) is a promising oxidant coagulant and disinfectant for the degradation of organic micropollutants. However, it is hard to elucidate the detailed oxidation mechanism through the current experimental approaches. Substituted anilines (SANs) are important chemical compounds that are widely used in many industries. This paper presents the use of density functional theory (DFT) to understand the oxidation mechanism of SANs by Fe(VI) and the effect of substituents. The calculation results revealed that the primary oxidations of SANs follow the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism. Interestingly, the hydroxyl oxygen of HFeO4 - is more reactive than the carbonyl oxygen when reacting with SANs. The formation of the SAN radical is crucial, and all of the products are formed from it. Azobenzene is more favorable to generate the above products. In addition, the obtained results indicate that this kind of substituent has a much greater influence on the reaction rather than the position. Thus, the present study provides a valuable insight into the transformation pathways of SANs in the Fe(VI) oxidation process and the effects of the substituent on oxidation. These results will advance the understanding of Fe(VI) involved in wastewater treatment.

Abstract
A theoretical investigation of the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) mechanism of rac-lactide (LA) with an yttrium complex featuring a N-heterocyclic carbine (NHC) tethered moiety is reported. It was found that the carbonyl of lactide is attacked by N(SiMe3)2 group rather than NHC species at the chain initiation step. The polymerization selectivity was further investigated via two consecutive insertions of lactide monomer molecules. The insertion of the second monomer in different assembly modes indicated that the steric interactions between the last enchained monomer unit and the incoming monomer together with the repulsion between the incoming monomer and the ligand framework are the primary factors determining the stereoselectivity. The interaction energy between the monomer and the metal center could also play an important role in the stereocontrol.

Abstract
Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a kind of antibiotic, remains in the environment and threatens public health. Ozone as a strong and green oxidant was widely used for selective oxidation degradation of residual SMX. However, it is hard to elucidate the detailed oxidation mechanism through current experimental approaches. A theoretical study has been carried out herein for exploring possible ozonation pathways of SMX. Two reaction mechanisms, viz., direct addition (DA) and H atom transfer (HAT), are considered. The results show that the primary oxidation of aromatic rings (benzene or isoxazole rings) of SMX follows the DA mechanism, featuring an electrophilic addition. Whereas, the oxidation of amino and methyl groups of SMX follows the HAT mechanism. Following the proposed mechanisms, the primary oxidation products detected in previous experiments could reasonably be obtained according to the current calculations. More importantly, O3 molecules as an electrophilic agent feasibly attack the moiety having a large orbital contribution to the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of sulfonamides. This result suggests that the primary ozonation site of sulfonamides could be theoretically predictable through the information of their frontier molecular orbitals. Meanwhile, a positive correlation between the O3-mediated HAT energy barriers and bond dissociation energies has been found for N-H and C-H bond oxidations.

DFT Studies on cis-1,4-Polymerization of Dienes Catalyzed by a Cationic Rare-Earth Metal Complex Bearing an Ancillary PNP Ligand. Polymers (Basel) 2017; 9:polym9020053. Abstract
Dnsity functional theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out for the highly selective cis-1,4-polymerization of butadiene catalyzed by a cationic rare-earth metal complex bearing an ancillary PNP ligand. It has been found that the chain initiation and propagation of butadiene polymerization occurs via the favorable cis-1,4-insertion route. The trans-1,4 and 1,2-insertion are unfavorable both kinetically and thermodynamically. The chain growth follows the π-allyl-insertion mechanism. The analyses of energy decomposition of transition states indicate that the likelihood of rival insertion pathways is predominantly controlled by the interaction energy of butadiene with a metal center and the deformation energy of butadiene moiety. The electronic factor of the central metal has a decisive influence on the cis- vs. trans-insertion and the regioselectivity (cis-1,4- vs. cis-1,2-insertion) is mainly determined by steric hindrance. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) coordination made monomer insertion less favorable compared with THF-free case and had more noticeable impact on the trans-monomer insertion compared with the cis case. During the chain propagation, cis-insertion of monomer facilitates THF de-coordination and the THF molecule could therefore dissociate from the central metal.

Abstract
Diarylamines ( Ar 2 NH ) are generally used as antioxidants to inhibit or retard the auto-oxidation degradation of lubricating oil by trapping ROO• radicals. In the present study, 20 kinds of 4,4′-disubstituted diphenylamine compounds were investigated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results indicate that the N – H bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE) linearly correlates its one-electron oxidation potential, the difference in Mulliken atomic charge on the two atoms of N – H bond, the reaction rate constant of hydrogen transfer from Ar 2 NH to peroxy radical, and the chemical hardness of the resulted Ar 2 N • radical, respectively. The substitution of alkyl groups (electron-donating groups) decreases the N – H BDE, one-electron oxidation potential and the reaction rate constant, while that of significant electron-withdrawing groups such as - NO 2 and - COOCH 3 increases these three parameters. The electron-donating groups such as alkyls could improve the antioxidation performance of 4,4′-disubstitued diphenylamines whereas electron-withdrawing groups have the contrary effect. In addition, the frontier molecular orbital of Ar 2 NH has been also analyzed.
