Highly Aligned Graphene Aerogels for Multifunctional Composites

Stemming from the unique in-plane honeycomb lattice structure and the sp2 hybridized carbon atoms bonded by exceptionally strong carbon-carbon bonds, graphene exhibits remarkable anisotropic electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. To maximize the utilization of graphene's in-plane properties, pre-constructed and aligned structures, such as oriented aerogels, films, and fibers, have been designed. The unique combination of aligned structure, high surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, mechanical stability, thermal conductivity, and porous nature of highly aligned graphene aerogels allows for tailored and enhanced performance in specific directions, enabling advancements in diverse fields. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in highly aligned graphene aerogels and their composites. It highlights the fabrication methods of aligned graphene aerogels and the optimization of alignment which can be estimated both qualitatively and quantitatively. The oriented scaffolds endow graphene aerogels and their composites with anisotropic properties, showing enhanced electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties along the alignment at the sacrifice of the perpendicular direction. This review showcases remarkable properties and applications of aligned graphene aerogels and their composites, such as their suitability for electronics, environmental applications, thermal management, and energy storage. Challenges and potential opportunities are proposed to offer new insights into prospects of this material.

Multifunctional Polymer Nanocomposites Reinforced by Aligned Carbon Nanomaterials

Carbon nanomaterials such as carbon black (CB), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphene have demonstrated significant potential as fillers to improve the electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of polymers and their fiber-reinforced polymer composites. The level of improvement has been found to depend significantly on the degree of alignment of carbon nanomaterials. Due to the very small scale and complex interactions of carbon nanomaterials with polymers and structural fibers, alignment in a given direction has been a major challenge. Over the past decade, considerable effort has been devoted to developing effective strategies to align carbon nanomaterials in polymer matrices. However, significant technological challenges remain, and there is still a lack of understanding of the alignment mechanisms and their effects on the properties of polymers and composites. This paper reviews in situ alignment techniques including shear deformation, mechanical stretching, electrospinning, and application of an external magnetic or electric field, and ex situ techniques including using vertically grown CNTs or graphene. This review particularly focuses on physical mechanisms underpinning the magnetic or electric field-induced alignment and theoretical analyses that describe the different motions occurring and the major parameters controlling alignment. Moreover, this review highlights the recent research findings of the effects of alignment on the properties of polymer nanocomposites. The outlook towards the challenges and opportunities in this field are also discussed in this review.

Crystallization Behavior of Poly(ethylene oxide) in Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Array

We investigate the effect of the presence of vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the orientation of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) lamellae and PEO crystallinity. The high alignment of carbon nanotubes acting as templates probably governs the orientation of PEO lamellae. This templating effect might result in the lamella planes of PEO crystals oriented along a direction parallel to the long axis of the nanotubes. The presence of aligned carbon nanotubes also gives rise to the decreases in PEO crystallinity, crystallization temperature, and melting temperature due to the perturbation of carbon nanotubes to the crystallization of PEO. These effects have significant implications for controlling the orientation of PEO lamellae and decreasing the crystallinity of PEO and thickness of PEO lamellae, which have significant impacts on ion transport in PEO/CNT composite and the capacitive performance of PEO/CNT composite. Both the decreased PEO crystallinity and the orientation of PEO lamellae along the long axes of vertically aligned CNTs give rise to the decrease in the charge transfer resistance, which is associated with the improvements in the ion transport and capacitive performance of PEO/CNT composite.

Fabrication of conductive polymer nanofibers through SWNT supramolecular functionalization and aqueous solution processing

Polymeric thin films and nanostructured composites with excellent electrical properties are required for the development of advanced optoelectronic devices, flexible electronics, wearable sensors, and tissue engineering scaffolds. Because most polymers available for fabrication are insulating, one of the biggest challenges remains the preparation of inexpensive polymer composites with good electrical conductivity. Among the nanomaterials used to enhance composite performance, single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are ideal due to their unique physical and electrical properties. Yet, a barrier to their widespread application is that they do not readily disperse in solvents traditionally used for polymer processing. In this study, we employed supramolecular functionalization of SWNTs with a conjugated polyelectrolyte as a simple approach to produce stable aqueous nanotube suspensions, that could be effortlessly blended with the polymer poly(ethyleneoxide) (PEO). The homogeneous SWNT:PEO mixtures were used to fabricate conductive thin films and nanofibers with improved conductivities through drop casting and electrospinning. The physical characterization of electrospun nanofibers through Raman spectroscopy and SEM revealed that the SWNTs were uniformly incorporated throughout the composites. The electrical characterization of SWNT:PEO thin films allowed us to assess their conductivity and establish a percolation threshold of 0.1 wt% SWNT. Similarly, measurement of the nanofiber conductivity showed that the electrospinning process improved the contact between nanotube complexes, resulting in conductivities in the S m(-1) range with much lower weight loading of SWNTs than their thin film counterparts. The methods reported for the fabrication of conductive nanofibers are simple, inexpensive, and enable SWNT processing in aqueous solutions, and offer great potential for nanofiber use in applications involving flexible electronics, sensing devices, and tissue engineering scaffolds.

Rheology of polymer carbon nanotubes composites

In this review paper the rheology of polymer nanocomposites with dispersed carbon nanotubes is presented. The major factors controlling the rheology of these nanocomposites are the overall concentration of the nanotubes and their state of dispersion. Percolation of anisotropic nanotubes and the transition from isotropic to nematic structures bound the range of concentrations over which the rheological properties of these nanocomposites is dominated by the meso-scale structure and dispersion and are of significance to the processing of nanotube based polymer nanocomposites. The percolation threshold and the concentration for the isotropic to nematic transition are strong functions of the inverse of the effective aspect ratio of the dispersed nanotubes and therefore restrict the range of concentrations over which such nanocomposites can be deployed. In this review we briefly describe the rheology in the dilute regime, where especially for the case of polymer nanocomposites the rheology is dominated by that of the polymer. Subsequently, the percolation phenomenon and rheological significances are presented. Finally, both linear and non-linear rheologies of semi-dilute dispersions with random orientation of nanotubes are discussed in detail. Where possible, the rheological responses are contextualized through the underlying structure of the nanocomposites and interplay of different forces.

Crystallization under one-dimensional confinement in alumina nanopores of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) and its composites with single wall carbon nanotubes

We report the preparation of semicrystalline polymer nanorods of PTT and of its nanocomposites with SWCNTs by infiltration of the molten polymer into disordered anodic alumina membranes. An accurate study of the crystalline orientation of these systems has been accomplished by means of X-ray microdiffraction. While polymer residual film exhibits isotropic character, edge-on lamellae are formed upon approaching the polymer/membrane interface. This effect might be due to the elongational flow that takes place in the molten state as polymer chains infiltrate the AAO membrane. At the interface, edge-on and flat-on crystalline lamellae coexist as a consequence of the strong interaction between the polymer and the AAO surface. Inside the nanopores, the confined environment induces a kinetic selection of polymer crystals which only allows the growth of crystalline lamellae with its a-axis parallel to that of the pore. In the case of PTT/SWCNT nanocomposites, this effect, in conjunction with the strong interaction between polymer and AAO surface, seems to prevail over the templating effect of the carbon nanotubes and a similar orientation to that of the neat PTT case is observed.
