Supramolecular Polymer Networks Based on Calix[5]arene Tethered Poly(p-phenyleneethynylene)

Light-up photoluminescence sensing of a nerve agent simulant by a bis-porphyrin–salen–UO2 complex

A luminescent bis-porphyrin–salen–UO₂ complex, showing a significant fluorescence light-up response upon reacting with DMMP (a simulant of nerve agents), is reported. The fluorescence change of this complex by excitation at 365 nm can be clearly observed with the naked eye, and this complex was successfully employed to construct a test paper to detect nerve agents.

The exposure of a nerve agent simulant to a fluorogenic sensor results in a significant increase in fluorescence response, allowing the construction of a paper test for the naked-eye detection of DMMP.

Polymerization of a biscalix[5]arene derivative

Recent decades have seen an increased interest in the preparation of polymers possessing host or guest moieties as the end group, which has enabled new polymeric materials such as self-healable, shape-memory, and stimuli-responsive materials. Such polymers are commonly synthesized by tethering the host or guest moieties to polymers. On the other hand, there are limited reports demonstrating the preparation of host- or guest-appended polymers by directly polymerizing the corresponding host- or guest-appended monomers, which is valuable for easy access to diverse polymers from single molecular species. However, reactive host and/or guest moieties of the monomer interfere with the polymerization reaction. Here, we report that a biscalix[5]arene host-appended molecule can be polymerized with various monomers to form the corresponding host-appended polymers. The host–guest complexation behavior of calix[5]arene-appended polymers with fullerene derivatives was studied by ¹H NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopic techniques, which revealed that the long polymer chains did not prevent host–guest complexation even when the fullerene derivative was equipped with a polymer chain. Thus, the present study shows the potential for developing polymers that have various combinations of polymer chains.

A calix[5]arene appended monomer molecule was subjected to polymerization reaction to yield corresponding methacrylate polymers. The calix[5]arene appended polymers showed excellent encapsulation capability for fullerene molecules.

Recent progress to construct calixarene-based polymers using covalent bonds: synthesis and applications

The combination of supramolecular chemistry and polymer sciences creates a great possibility to afford calixarene-based polymers offering unique features and applications. The enhancement of calixarene's versatility in this manner has made chemists better able to achieve different objectives in host-guest chemistry. The calixarene-based polymers can be divided into covalent polymers and supramolecular polymers regarding the interactions. Although there are several studies available on the calixarene-based supramolecular polymers, there is a paucity of studies on the calixarene-based covalent polymers. In this paper, the most recent developments and applications of the calixarene-based covalent polymers in the last two decades have been reviewed. We have particularly focused on the polymers, including those where the calixarene molecules have been used as macromonomers and polymerize through covalent bonds. Moreover, covalent polymers or solid supports functionalized with calixarenes are highlighted as well.

Self-assembled carbon nanoparticles as messengers for artificial chemical communication

Herein, supramolecular carbon nanoparticle aggregates were obtained via covalent functionalization of the shell of nanoparticles with triazine and subsequent hydrogen bonding reticulation upon the addition of naphthalene diimide. The resulting reticulated nanoparticles maintained the optical properties required for artificial chemical communication but exhibited a reduced diffusion coefficient, enabling sharper and more intense molecular bit capabilities when employed as chemical messengers. As a result, they are ideal candidates for the transport of information along extended fluid paths. We believe that our results represent a further step towards the understanding and optimization of all the experimental parameters affecting the information transfer efficiency in artificial chemical communication.

Supramolecular Detection of a Nerve Agent Simulant by Fluorescent Zn-Salen Oligomer Receptors

We report on new Zn-Salen oligomer receptors able to recognize a nerve agent simulant, namely dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), by a supramolecular approach. In particular, three Zn-Salen oligomers (Zn-Oligo-A, -B, and -C), differing by the length distribution, were obtained and characterized by NMR, Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), UV-Vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Furthermore, we investigated their recognition properties towards DMMP by using fluorescence measurements. We found that the recognition ability depends on the length of the oligomeric chain, and the Zn-Oligo-C shows a binding constant value higher than those already reported in literature for the DMMP detection.

Self-healing polymer materials constructed by macrocycle-based host-guest interactions

Self-healing polymers, which can spontaneously recover themselves after being ruptured, result in enhanced lifetimes for materials and open up a fascinating direction in material science. Macrocycle-based host-guest interactions, one of the most crucial non-covalent interactions, play a key role in self-healing material fabrication. This review aims to highlight the very recent and important progress made in the area of self-healing polymer materials by focusing on cyclodextrins (CDs), crown ethers, cucurbit[n]urils (CBs), calix[n]arenes and pillar[n]arenes with special guest groups and tailored structures. In addition, we also propose future research directions and hope that this review can in a way reflect the current situation and future trends in this developing area.

Applications of supramolecular capsules derived from resorcin[4]arenes, calix[n]arenes and metallo-ligands: from biology to catalysis

This review summarizes supramolecular capsules based on resorcin[4]arenes, calix[n]arenes and metal–ligands, having concrete applications in biomedical field, catalysis and material science.

31-Benz-yloxy-5,11,17,23,29-penta-tert-butyl-calix[5]arene-32,33,34,35-tetra-ol

The title compound, C₆₂H₇₆O₅, known to be one of the most versatile synthetic precursors/inter­mediates of calix[5]arene derivatives, adopts an approximate C_s-symmetric cone-in conformation. The aryl­oxybenzyl ring is tilted in such a way that the p-tert-butyl group fills the macrocycle cavity, while the benzyl group moves away from the cavity axis. In the crystal, this conformational arrangement is secured by intra- and inter­molecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds forming inversion dimers. Four tert-butyl groups are disordered over two orientations, with occupancy ratios of 0.745 (6):0.255 (6), 0.837 (5):0.163 (5), 0.850 (5):0.150 (5) and 0.845 (8):0.155 (8).
