In Situ Formation of Metal Nanoparticle Composites via “Soft” Plasma Electrochemical Reduction of Metallosupramolecular Polymer Films

Synthesis of platinum(II)-complex end-tethered polymers: spectroscopic properties and nanostructured particles

Although metal-containing polymers have been widely studied as a novel class of functional soft materials, the microphase separation between polymeric segments and metal-ligand complexes has been less addressed, which is critical to control their structures and functions. To do this, short-chain polystyrenes (PSs) have been end-functionalized with nanosized square-planar platinum(II) complexes. The platinum(II)-comprising polymers were found to show significant luminescence enhancement in chloroform/methanol solvent mixtures upon increasing the methanol composition. By modulating both the PS length and solvent quality, various self-assembled morphologies formed controllably in the mixed solvents and typical examples include nanofibers, nanoellipsoids, and nanospheres. More interestingly, the inside structures of these polymer particles are shown to be lamellar with sub-10 nm spacings, wherein the PS blocks are alternatively aligned with the platinum(II) units. Such a luminescence enhancement and hierarchical nanostructured particles originate from a subtle combination of directional Pt(II)⋯Pt(II) and/or π-π stacking interactions between the platinum(II) units and the solvophobic effect between the PS blocks. This work suggests that by microphase separating polymer chains with nanosized metal-ligand complexes, metal-containing polymers can self-assemble to form sub-10 nm scale nanostructures showcasing desired properties and functions.

Low-Temperature Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Processes for the Deposition of Nanocomposite Coatings

Low-temperature atmospheric pressure (AP) plasma technologies have recently proven to offer a range of interesting opportunities for the preparation of a variety of nanocomposite (NC) coatings with different chemical compositions, structures, and morphologies. Since the late 2000s, numerous strategies have been implemented for the deposition of this intriguing class of coatings by using both direct and remote AP plasma sources. Interestingly, considerable progress has been made in the development of aerosol-assisted deposition processes in which the use of either precursor solutions or nanoparticle dispersions in aerosol form allows greatly widening the range of constituents that can be combined in the plasma-deposited NC films. This review summarizes the research published on this topic so far and, specifically, aims to present a concise survey of the developed plasma processes, with particular focus on their optimization as well as on the structural and functional properties of the NC coatings to which they provide access. Current challenges and opportunities are also briefly discussed to give an outlook on possible future research directions.

Synthesis of metallic nanoparticles by microplasma

The synthesis of metallic nanoparticles has been of long standing interest, primarily induced by their novel and unique properties that differ considerably from bulk materials. Despite various methods have been developed, it is still a challenge to produce high-quality metallic nanoparticles with controllable properties in a simple, cost-effective and environmentally benign manner. However, the development of the microplasma-assisted technology can bring an answer to this formidable challenge. In the present work, four main microplasma configurations used for metallic synthesis of metallic nanoparticles are reviewed.  These are  hollow-electrode microdischarges, microplasma jets with external electrodes, microplasma jets with consumable electrodes and plasma–liquid systems. The state of the art characterization methodologies and diagnostic techniques for in situ microplasma-assisted precursor dissociation as well as ex situ metallic nanoparticles analysis is also summarized. Further, a broad category of representative examples of microplasma-induced metallic nanoparticle fabrication is presented, together with the discussion of possible synthesis mechanisms. This is followed by a brief introduction to related safety considerations. Finally, the future perspectives, associated challenges and feasible solutions for scale-up of this technique are pointed out.

Microplasma-Induced in Situ Formation of Patterned, Stretchable Electrical Conductors

We report a microplasma-based process to fabricate stretchable, electrically conductive metal patterns from metal-cation containing polymers. The technique is compatible with prestraining strategies, allowing films to remain conductive with almost no drop in resistance up to 35% strain. We show that the stretchability of the films is related to uniform strain delocalization which is made possible by how the metallized layer is formed in situ, growing from within the polymer matrix rather than by deposition, to create a quasi-monolithic structure without a well-defined metal-polymer interfacial boundary.

Soluble PtII-Containing Polymers Based on a 2,6-Bis(1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-4-ethynylpyridine Ligand

A soluble Pt^II-acetylide polymer 6 was prepared in a supramolecular polymerization of a Pt^II-chloro precursor complex 5, which represents a self-complementary AB-type monomer. This new type of polymer combines the structural features of the common polyplatinynes and cationic Pt^II-acetylide complexes. Though the photophysical and electrochemical properties of the material still need to be advanced, a versatile and straightforward method for the preparation of soluble, cationic Pt^II-acetylide polymers with phosphorescent behavior is offered.

Synthesis of platinum(ii) complex end functionalized star polymers: luminescence enhancements and unimolecular micelles in solvents of weakened quality

Platinum(ii) complex end functionalized star polymers have been synthesized by reacting K₂PtCl₄ with star ligands ended with 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2′-yl)pyridine. They show luminescence enhancements and form unimolecular micelles in solvents of weakened quality.

Synthesis and characterization of metallo-supramolecular polymers

The incorporation of metal centers into the backbone of polymers has led to the development of a broad range of organometallic and coordination compounds featuring properties that are relevant for potential applications in diverse areas of research, ranging from energy storage/conversion to bioactive or self-healing materials. In this review, the basic concepts and synthetic strategies leading to these types of materials as well as the scope of available characterization techniques will be summarized and discussed.

Fabrication of electrically conductive metal patterns at the surface of polymer films by microplasma-based direct writing

We describe a direct-write process for producing electrically conductive metal patterns at the surface of polymers. Thin films of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) loaded with Ag ions are reduced by a scanning, atmospheric-pressure microplasma to form crystalline Ag features with a line width of 300 μm. Materials analysis reveals that the metallization occurs in a thin layer of ∼5 μm near the film surface, suggesting that the Ag ions diffuse to the surface. Sheet resistances of 1-10 Ω/sq are obtained independent of film thickness and Ag volume concentration, which is desirable for producing surface conductivity on polymers while minimizing metal loading.

Three-Dimensional Periodically Ordered Nanohetero Metallic Materials from Self-Assembled Block Copolymer Composites

We report a synthetic route to inorganic nanoheterostructures with tunable size and morphology via self-assembled block copolymer mesophase templates. Two Fe precursors, tricarbonyl(cyclooctatetraene) iron and acetylacetonate iron(III), and one Pt precursor, platinum dimethylcyclooctadiene, were selectively introduced into separate polymer blocks of a block copolymer, polystyrene-b-poly-4-vinylpyridine, and then the block copolymer templates were removed by pyrolysis. Self-assembled inorganic nanoheterostructures (spheres, hexagonal cylinders, and layers of hard magnetic phase FePt in a matrix of soft magnetic phase α-Fe) were produced. The morphology and domain size of the nanoheterostructures could be tailored by controlling the molecular weight and relative block lengths of the block copolymers. The controlled size and morphology of the inorganic nanoheterostructures demonstrate the method's utility for producing highly functional materials.
