Ethynyl-Capped Hyperbranched Conjugated Polytriazole: Click Polymerization, Clickable Modification, and Aggregation-Enhanced Emission

New multiple-layered 3D polymers showing aggregation-induced emission and polarization

An exceptional achiral and chiral multilayer 3D polymer has been created and controlled by uniform and distinct aromatic chromophore units that are multiply sandwiched by naphthyl berths. In order to put together this assembly, it was necessary to search for new catalytic Suzuki-Miyaura polycouplings among various catalytic systems, monomers, and catalysts. Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) was able to verify the presence of many framework layers. The resulting achiral and chiral polymers displayed notable optical characteristic.

Au(I)-mediated N2-elimination from triazaphospholes: a one-pot synthesis of novel N2P2-heterocycles

Novel tosyl- and mesitylsulfonyl-substituted triazaphospholes were synthesized and structurally characterized. In an attempt to prepare the corresponding Au(I)-complexes with stoichiometric amounts of AuCl·S(CH₃)₂, cyclo-1,3-diphospha(III)-2,4-diazane-AuCl-complexes were obtained instead. Our here presented results offer a new strategy for preparing such coordination compounds selectively in a one-pot approach.

Synthesis and Properties of BODIPY Appended Tetraphenylethylene Scaffolds as Photoactive Arrays

Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) and its derivatives exhibit excellent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. The TPE unit is easily accessible, and many functional groups can be introduced in a facile manner to yield effective luminescent materials in both solution and the solid-state. It is because of this, several TPE-based compounds have been developed and applied in many areas, such as OLEDs and chemical sensors. Boron dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs) are a class of pyrrolic fluorophore of great interest with myriad application in both material science and biomedical applications. Through the combination of Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions and traditional dipyrromethene chemistry, we present the syntheses of novel tetra-BODIPY-appended TPE derivatives with different distances between the TPE and BODIPY cores. The TPE-BODIPY arrays 6 and 9 show vastly differing AIE properties in THF/H2O systems, with 9 exhibiting dual-AIE, along with both conjugates being found to produce singlet oxygen (1O2). We presume the synthesized BODIPY-appended TPE scaffolds to be utilized for potential applications in the fields of light-emitting systems and theranostics.

Nitrogen-Rich Tetraphenylethene-Based Luminescent Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient Detection of Carcinogens

The introduction of nitrogen-rich functional groups into a luminescent metal-organic framework (LMOF) can enhance its fluorescent sensing ability. In this work, we designed and synthesized a triazole-containing tetracarboxyl-substituted tetraphenylethene (TPE) ligand, tetrakis[4-(4-carboxyphenyl)(1H-1,2,3-triazol-4,1-diyl)phenyl]ethene (H₄TCPTAPE), featuring a prominent aggregation-induced emission (AIE). A highly porous TPE-based LMOF [Zn₃(TCPTAPE)(H₂O)₂(OH)₂] (1) with large pores was successfully obtained via solvothermal assembly of the H₄TCPTAPE ligand and Zn(II) ions, which showed a high fluorescence quantum yield of 54%. The activated 1 could selectively and sensitively detect aristolochic acid I with a high fluorescence quenching efficiency of 96% and a low detection limit of 1.02 μM, indicating that it has a potential application as a luminescence-based chemical sensor for carcinogens.

Hyperbranched Poly(ester-enamine) from Spontaneous Amino-yne Click Reaction for Stabilization of Gold Nanoparticle Catalysts

Hyperbranched polymers have garnered much attention due to attractive properties and wide applications, such as drug-controlled release, stimuli-responsive nano-objects, photosensitive materials and catalysts. Herein, two types of novel hyperbranched poly(ester-enamine) (hb-PEEa) were designed and synthesized via the spontaneous amino-yne click reaction of A₂ monomer (1, 3-bis(4-piperidyl)-propane (A_2a ) or piperazine (A_2b )) and B₃ monomer (trimethylolpropanetripropiolate). According to Flory's hypothesis, gelation is an intrinsic problem in an ideal A₂ +B₃ polymerization system. By controlling the polymerization conditions, such as monomer concentration, molar ratio and rate of addition, a non-ideal A₂ +B₃ polymerization system can be established to avoid gelation and to synthesize soluble hb-PEEa. Due to abundant unreacted alkynyl groups in periphery, the hb-PEEa can be further functionalized by different amino compounds or their derivates. The as-prepared amphiphilic PEG-hb-PEEa copolymer can readily self-assemble into micelles in water, which can be used as surfactant to stabilize Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) during reduction of NaBH₄ in aqueous solution. As a demonstration, the as-prepared PEG-hb-PEEa-supported AuNPs demonstrate good dispersion in water, solvent stability and remarkable catalytic activity for reduction of nitrobenzene compounds.

Progress on Catalytic Systems Used in Click Polymerization

Click polymerization, a powerful synthetic technique to construct polymers with unique structures and advanced functions, is of crucial importance in the areas of polymer and material sciences. A variety of click polymerizations such as azide-alkyne, thiol-yne, amino-yne, and hydroxyl-yne reactions have been established, wherein the catalytic systems play an indispensable role in realizing these highly practical reactions based on triple-bond building blocks, as they directly influence the efficiencies of the click polymerizations and the performances of the resultant polymers. The vital employment of catalysts is reviewed and their developments from innovative discoveries to the eminent position are outlined. Moreover, the challenges and perspectives in this area are also briefly discussed.

Controlled Photoerasable Fluorescent Behaviors with Dithienylethene-Based Molecular Turnstile

The precise control of molecular interaction and motion is a powerful strategy in the creation and development of intelligent materials. We demonstrate here a simple concept and approach to integrate intramolecular photochromic property with intermolecular aggregation-induced emission behaviors, with the aim to construct a new type of photoswitchable luminescent materials. This strategy is realized by the dithienylethene-bridged bispyridinium salt as photochromic molecular turnstile, and their subsequent fabrication into optically functional materials is reported. By restricting the rotation of central chemical bonds, the obtained molecular turnstile not only exhibits photocontrolled fluorescence emission through solvent exchange but is also capable of transforming into photowritable and photoerasable films in polymeric matrix with good recyclability. This functional molecular turnstile provides convenient routes to construct photochromic nanomaterials with controlled photophysical behaviors.

Recent advances in alkyne-based click polymerizations

The recent progress in alkyne-based click polymerizations and their application in the preparation of new functional polymers are summarized. The challenges and opportunities in this area are also briefly discussed.

N-Benzoyl dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole-based hyperbranched polymers by direct arylation polymerization

BACKGROUND

Although poly(N-acyl dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole)s have attracted great attention as a new class of conducting polymers with highly stabilized energy levels, hyperbranched polymers based on this monomer type have not yet been studied. Thus, this work aims at the synthesis of novel hyperbranched polymers containing N-benzoyl dithieno[3,23,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole acceptor unit and 3-hexylthiophene donor moiety via the direct arylation polymerization method. Their structures, molecular weights and thermal properties were characterized via 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopies, GPC, TGA, DSC and XRD measurements, and the optical properties were investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies.

RESULTS

Hyperbranched conjugated polymers containing N-benzoyl dithieno[3,23,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole acceptor unit and 3-hexylthiophene donor moiety, linked with either triphenylamine or triphenylbenzene as branching unit, were obtained via direct arylation polymerization of the N-benzoyl dithieno[3,23,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole, 2,5-dibromo 3-hexylthiophene and tris(4-bromophenyl)amine (or 1,3,5-tris(4-bromophenyl)benzene) monomers. Organic solvent-soluble polymers with number-average molecular weights of around 18,000 g mol-1 were obtained in 80-92% yields. The DSC and XRD results suggested that the branching structure hindered the stacking of polymer chains, leading to crystalline domains with less ordered packing in comparison with the linear analogous polymers. The results revealed that the hyperbranched polymer with triphenylbenzene as the branching unit exhibited a strong red-shift of the maximum absorption wavelength, attributed to a higher polymer stacking order as a result of the planar structure of triphenylbenzene.

CONCLUSION

Both hyperbranched polymers with triphenylamine/triphenylbenzene as branching moieties exhibited high structural order in thin films, which can be promising for organic solar cell applications. The UV-vis absorption of the hyperbranched polymer containing triphenylbenzene as branching unit was red-shifted as compared with the triphenylamine-containing polymer, as a result of a higher chain packing degree.

Mechanoluminescence from pure hydrocarbon AIEgen

The pure hydrocarbon molecule of 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-ethynylphenyl)ethene (TETPE), with an ideal symmetric molecular geometry, exhibits the character of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and mechanoluminescence (ML), mainly due to its twist structure and strong intermolecular static electric interaction.

Hyperbranched conjugated polymers containing 1,3-butadiene units: metal-free catalyzed synthesis and selective chemosensors for Fe3+ ions

A new high performance novolac-based polytriazole resin

A novolac-based polytriazole (NPTA) resin was synthesized using 4,4′-diazidomethylbiphenyl and a propargylated novolac resin through catalyst-free click polymerization. Differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared analysis results demonstrate that the NPTA resin can be cured at 80°C. The glass transition temperature of the cured NPTA-88 resin is 202°C. The thermal degradation temperature of the cured NPTA resin is 352°C under nitrogen. The composite of the resin exhibits good mechanical property.

Click-chemistry approaches to π-conjugated polymers for organic electronics applications

Given the wide utility of click-chemistry reactions for the preparation of simple moieties within large architecturally complex materials, this minireview article aims at surveying papers exploring their scope in the area of π-conjugated polymers for application in organic electronics to enable advanced functional properties.

The use of azide-alkyne click chemistry in recent syntheses and applications of polytriazole-based nanostructured polymers

The rapid development of efficient organic click coupling reactions has significantly facilitated the construction of synthetic polymers with sophisticated branched nanostructures. This Feature Article summarizes the recent progress in the application of efficient copper-catalyzed and copper-free azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC and CuFAAC) reactions in the syntheses of dendrimers, hyperbranched polymers, star polymers, graft polymers, molecular brushes, and cyclic graft polymers. Literature reports on the interesting properties and functions of these polytriazole-based nanostructured polymers are also discussed to illustrate their potential applications as self-healing polymers, adhesives, polymer catalysts, opto-electronic polymer materials and polymer carriers for drug and imaging molecules.

Tetraphenylethene-Based Conjugated Fluoranthene: A Potential Fluorescent Probe for Detection of Nitroaromatic Compounds

This study reports the synthesis and photophysical properties of a star-shaped, novel, fluoranthene-tetraphenylethene (TFPE) conjugated luminogen, which exhibits aggregation-induced blue-shifted emission (AIBSE). The bulky fluoranthene units at the periphery prevent intramolecular rotation (IMR) of phenyl rings and induces a blueshift with enhanced emission. The AIBSE phenomenon was investigated by solvatochromic and temperature-dependent emission studies. Nanoaggregates of TFPE, formed by varying the water/THF ratio, were investigated by SEM and TEM and correlated with optical properties. The TFPE conjugate was found to be a promising fluorescent probe towards the detection of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs), especially for 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (PA) with high sensitivity and a high Stern-Volmer quenching constant. The study reveals that nanoaggregates of TFPE formed at 30 and 70% water in THF showed unprecedented sensitivity with detection limits of 0.8 and 0.5 ppb, respectively. The nanoaggregates formed at water fractions of 30 and 70% exhibit high Stern-Volmer constants (Ksv=79,998 and 51,120 M(-1), respectively) towards PA. Fluorescence quenching is ascribed to photoinduced electron transfer between TFPE and NACs with a static quenching mechanism. Test strips coated with TFPE luminogen demonstrate fast and ultra-low-level detection of PA for real-time field analysis.

Conjugated polymers developed from alkynes

The numerous merits of conjugated polymers (CPs) have encouraged scientists to develop a variety of synthetic routes to CPs with diverse structures and functionalities. Among the large scope of substrates, alkyne plays an important role in constructing polymers with conjugated backbones. In addition to some well-developed reactions including Glaser–Hay and Sonogashira coupling, azide/thiol-yne click reaction and cyclotrimerization, some novel alkyne-based reactions have also been explored such as oxidative polycoupling, decarbonylative polycoupling and multicomponent tandem polymerizations. This review focuses on the recent progress on the synthetic methodology of CPs in the last five years using monomers with two or more triple bonds and some of their high-technological applications. Selected examples of materials properties of these CPs are given in this review, such as fluorescence response to chemical or physical stimuli, magnetism, white light emission, cell imaging and bioprobing. Finally, a short perspective is raised in regard to the outlook of the preparation methodologies, functionalities as well as potential applications of CPs in the future.

One-pot synthesis of indolizine functionalized nanohyperbranched polyesters with different nano morphologies and their fluorescent response to anthracene
