Abstract
In this work, we synthesized a family of three structurally related chiral oligothiophenes containing a 1,4-diketo-3,6-diarylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP) unit as the central core; functionalized with the same (S)-3,7-dimethyl-1-octyl chains on the nitrogen atoms of lactam moieties, they only differ in the number of lateral thiophene units. The aggregation modes of these π-conjugated chiral systems were evaluated by means of UV-Vis absorption and ECD spectroscopies in conditions of solution aggregation (CHCl3 /MeOH mixtures) and as thin films, describing in particular the impact of the π-conjugation length on the chiroptical properties. Interestingly, we found that the variable number of thiophene units attached to the DPP core affects not only the propensity to aggregation but also the aggregates' helicity. ECD revealed information about the supramolecular arrangement of these molecules, that one would not obtain by using conventional optical spectroscopy and microscopy techniques. Thin film samples revealed very different aggregation modes with respect to solution aggregates, casting doubts on the common assumption that these latter may serve as simple models of the former ones.

Abstract
Fluorescent materials with large Stokes shifts have significant potential for use in optical applications. Typically, a synthetic design strategy is utilized for this purpose. In this study, we demonstrated a novel method by binding a chiral template to a nonchiral fluorescent agent without chemical modification. Specifically, α-helical poly(L-lysine) was employed as the chiral template, which interacted with a disulfonic fluorescent dye, such as NK2751. The dye caused excimer luminescence by inducing the formation of a chirally H-aggregated dimer only when poly(L-lysine) was in an α-helical shape. The result was a Stokes shift of 230 nm. Similar effects were not observed when the chiral template was in a random coil condition and the Stokes shift was less than 40 nm. These findings imply that H-aggregated dimerization, which often results in quenching, permits the electronic transitions necessary for fluorescence events by the formation of the chirally twisted state. In addition, we introduce for the first time the generation of circularly polarized luminescence using the chirality induction phenomena in a dye supported by poly(L-lysine).

Abstract
The chiroptical features of chiral diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP) derivatives have been only marginally investigated to date. In this regard, we have synthesized ad hoc four chiral DPP dyes, functionalized with enantiopure alkyl groups from natural sources either on the lactam moieties or on the terminal positions of the π-conjugated backbone, to promote an efficient self-assembly into chiral supramolecular structures. For each of them, the aggregation modes has been investigated by absorbance and ECD spectroscopies in conditions of solution aggregation and on thin films, considering the effects of deposition technique (drop casting vs. spin coating) and post-deposition operations (solvent and thermal annealing). The effect of the structure of lateral π-conjugated units attached to the central DPP scaffold, as well as that of the position of the alkyl chiral group, has been assessed. ECD revealed superior capability, compared to absorbance spectroscopy, to provide information on the aggregation modes and to detect the possible co-existence of multiple aggregation pathways.

Abstract
The ICD phenomenon has drawn a lot of attention in recent years in applicable fields such as chiral sensing and chiroptical devices. In this work, we first gaze at the issues of thin spin-coated films not being able to deliver consistent ICD signals. A hypothesis of the underlying problem is proposed through a brief elucidation of the spin-coating process. To confirm and eliminate the uncontrollable dynamic factors with spin coating, we then dedicate our efforts to develop a new gel system based on chiral L-/D-N',N'-Dibenzoyl-cystine. Achiral dye molecules are intercalated in a DBC gel through a "one-step" preparation procedure. Compared to the former spin-coating system, significantly improved reproducibility of the new gel system is demonstrated. Besides, the ICD signals can be customized in a broad spectral range (wavelength tunability) by substituting dye molecules. Finally, we discuss the potential applications of this interesting system.

Abstract
Precise synthesis and efficient self-assembly of semiconducting polymers are of great interest. Herein, we report the controlled synthesis of π-conjugated poly(phenyl isocyanide)-b-poly(phenyleneethylene) (PPI-b-PPE) copolymers via chain extension of ethynyl 4-iodobenzene initiated by Pd(II)-terminated helical poly(phenyl isocyanide) (PPI). The in-situ-generated block copolymers self-assembled into various supramolecular architectures depending on the PPE length. The helical PPI segment induced the block copolymers with an appropriate PPE length self-assemble into helical nanofibers with a controlled size and defined helicity. Interestingly, the chiral assemblies of the block copolymers exhibit intense optical activity and emit clear circularly polarized luminescence.

Abstract
Chiral π-conjugated molecules provide new materials with outstanding features for current and perspective applications, especially in the field of optoelectronic devices. In thin films, processes such as charge conduction, light absorption, and emission are governed not only by the structure of the individual molecules but also by their supramolecular structures and intermolecular interactions to a large extent. Electronic circular dichroism, ECD, and its emission counterpart, circularly polarized luminescence, CPL, provide tools for studying aggregated states and the key properties to be sought for designing innovative devices. In this review, we shall present a comprehensive coverage of chiroptical properties measured on thin films of organic π-conjugated molecules. In the first part, we shall discuss some general concepts of ECD, CPL, and other chiroptical spectroscopies, with a focus on their applications to thin film samples. In the following, we will overview the existing literature on chiral π-conjugated systems whose thin films have been characterized by ECD and/or CPL, as well other chiroptical spectroscopies. Special emphasis will be put on systems with large dissymmetry factors (gabs and glum) and on the application of ECD and CPL to derive structural information on aggregated states.

Abstract
Molecular chirality and the inherently connected differential absorption of circular polarized light (CD) combined with semiconducting properties offers great potential for chiral opto-electronics. Here we discuss the temperature-controlled assembly of enantiopure prolinol functionalized squaraines with opposite handedness into intrinsically circular dichroic, molecular J-aggregates in spincasted thin films. By Mueller matrix spectroscopy we accurately probe an extraordinary high excitonic circular dichroism, which is not amplified by mesoscopic ordering effects. At maximum, CD values of 1000 mdeg/nm are reached and, after accounting for reflection losses related to the thin film nature, we obtain a film thickness independent dissymmetry factor g = 0.75. The large oscillator strength of the corresponding absorption within the deep-red spectral range translates into a negative real part of the dielectric function in the spectral vicinity of the exciton resonance. Thereby, we provide a new small molecular benchmark material for the development of organic thin film based chiroptics.

Abstract
A novel fluorescent conjugated polymer (poly(2-amino-N-(2-((4-ethynylphenyl) ethynyl) phenyl)-5-guanidinopentanamide)-1,4-phenylethynylene-1,4-phenyleneethynylene, PPE-Arg) was synthesized in this paper. We found that PPE-Arg could be quenched by picric acid (PA). Photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism can be used to describe the fluorescence quenching of PPE-Arg. It could be speculated that the photo-induced electrons may be transferred from PPE-Arg to nitroaromatic explosives. In this paper, the experiment conditions and detection performance of PPE-Arg were systematically studied. The experiment results demonstrate PPE-Arg as a sensor for PA has a good linear range from 5 × 10-7 to 6 × 10-5 mol L-1 with the calculated limit of detection (LOD) to be 1.0 × 10-7 mol L-1. Meanwhile, reaction time between PPE-Arg and PA is less than 1 min. This proposed sensor was applied to rapidly detect nitroaromatic explosives in environmental water samples and satisfactory results were obtained.
