Multiresponsive Hydrogels Formed by Interpenetrated Self-Assembled Polymer Networks

Poly(ethylene oxide)/Gelatin-Based Biphasic Photocrosslinkable Hydrogels of Tunable Morphology for Hepatic Progenitor Cell Encapsulation

Macroporous hydrogels have great potential for biomedical applications. Liquid or gel-like pores were created in a photopolymerizable hydrogel by forming water-in-water emulsions upon mixing aqueous solutions of gelatin and a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based triblock copolymer. The copolymer constituted the continuous matrix, which dominated the mechanical properties of the hydrogel once photopolymerized. The gelatin constituted the dispersed phase, which created macropores in the hydrogel. The microstructures of the porous hydrogel were determined by the volume fraction of the gelatin phase. When volume fractions were close to 50 v%, free-standing hydrogels with interpenetrated morphology can be obtained thanks to the addition of a small amount of xanthan. The hydrogels displayed Young's moduli ranging from 5 to 30 kPa. They have been found to be non-swellable and non-degradable in physiological conditions. Preliminary viability tests with hepatic progenitor cells embedded in monophasic PEO-based hydrogels showed rapid mortality of the cells, whereas encouraging viability was observed in PEO-based triblock copolymer/gelatin macroporous hydrogels. The latter has the potential to be used in cell therapy.

Double dynamic hydrogels formed by wormlike surfactant micelles and cross-linked polymer

HYPOTHESIS

Interpenetrating networks consisting of a polymer network with dynamic cross-links and a supramolecular network allow obtaining hydrogels with significantly enhanced mechanical properties.

EXPERIMENTS

Binary hydrogels composed of a dynamically cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) network and a transient network of entangled highly charged mixed wormlike micelles (WLMs) of surfactants (potassium oleate and n-octyltrimethylammonium bromide) were prepared and studied by rheometry, SANS, USANS, cryo-TEM, and NMR spectroscopy.

FINDINGS

Binary hydrogels show significantly enhanced rheological properties (a 3400-fold higher viscosity and 27-fold higher plateau modulus) as compared to their components taken separately. This is due to the microphase separation leading to local concentrating of PVA and WLMs providing larger number of polymer-polymer contacts for cross-linking and longer WLMs with more entanglements. Such materials are very promising for the application in many areas, ranging from enhanced oil recovery to biomedical uses.

An Advanced Material with Synergistic Viscoelasticity Enhancement of Hydrophobically Associated Water-Soluble Polymer and Surfactant

In order to prepare materials with controllable properties, changeable microstructure, and high viscoelasticity solution with low polymer and surfactant concentration, a composite is constituted by adding surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) to hydrophobically associated water-soluble polymer (abbreviated as PAAC) solution. The viscoelasticity, aggregate microstructure, and interaction mechanism of the composite are investigated by rheometery, Cryo-transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM), and fluorescence spectrum. The results show that when the mass ratio of polymer to surfactant is 15:1, the viscosity of the composite reaches the maximum. The viscosity of the composite system increases hundredfold. The viscosity plateau under dynamic shear is generated. The composite has the properties of high viscoelasticity, strong shear thinning behavior, and good salt tolerance, and temperature resistance. The maximum viscosity of the composite is shown at the salinity of 20000 mg L^-1 . In addition, there is no phase separation in the composite with the increase of polymer and surfactant concentration, which indicates the good stability of the system. It is proposed a method to obtain a high viscoelasticity solution by adding surfactants without wormlike micelles to a hydrophobically associated water-soluble polymer solution.

Cage dynamics leads to double relaxation of the intermediate scattering function in a binary colloidal system

A system of binary colloids where one fraction of particles is aggregating by forming irreversible bonds and the other fraction of particles only interacts as hard spheres, is simulated using Brownian cluster dynamics. These aggregating species always formed percolating clusters for the case of diffusing hard spheres while for the static case, formation of percolating clusters depended on the fraction of static hard spheres in the system. The dynamics of the hard spheres inside the percolating clusters was studied by restarting the simulation after the kinetics of aggregation was arrested. Two cases were studied, one where the percolated particles moved within the bonds or cage dynamics was allowed and another where the movement within the bonds was not allowed or the cages were static. The hard spheres showed anomalous diffusion in both cases. The mean square displacement showed that for the case of dynamic cages we always had diffusive hard spheres irrespective of the fraction of hard spheres for volume fractions below 0.49. Static cages, depending on the fraction of hard spheres, showed either diffusive or arrested behavior of hard spheres. The intermediate scattering function of only the hard sphere particles showed double relaxation similar to the colloidal glass system for low volume fraction, where the fraction of hard sphere particles was small. For higher fractions we observed only a single stretched exponential. We could differentiate between slow and fast particles for both static and dynamic cages. For the case of static cages the hard spheres were permanently stuck inside the cages while for the case of dynamic cages almost all the hard spheres were moving in and out of the cages.

Photo-Cross-Linked Self-Assembled Poly(ethylene oxide)-Based Hydrogels Containing Hybrid Junctions with Dynamic and Permanent Cross-Links

Homogeneous hydrogels were formed by self-assembly of triblock copolymers via association of small hydrophobic end blocks into micelles bridged by large poly(ethylene oxide) central blocks. A fraction of the end blocks were photo-cross-linkable and could be rapidly cross-linked covalently by in situ UV irradiation. In this manner networks were formed with well-defined chain lengths between homogeneously distributed hybrid micelles that contained both permanent and dynamically cross-linked end blocks. Linear rheology showed a single relaxation mode before in situ irradiation intermediate between those of the individual networks. The presence of transient cross-links decreased the percolation threshold of the network rendered permanent by irradiation and caused a strong increase of the elastic modulus at lower polymer concentrations. Large amplitude oscillation and tensile tests showed significant increase of the fracture strain caused by the dynamic cross-links.

Fast formation of a supramolecular ion gel/solvoplastic elastomer with excellent stretchability

This study describes a simple yet efficient approach for the preparation of an ionic gel that is also elastomeric in its solid-state bulk form. A series of poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-lauryl methacrylate) P(DMAEMA-co-LMA) copolymers were synthesized first by radical polymerization. Quaternization of the PDMAEMA component in tetrahydrofuran enables the formation of supramolecular network, giving rise to an ion gel. An elastomer with an elongation at break of over 600% was obtained from the gel. The elastomer, connected by supramolecular ionic cross-links, is solvoplastic in certain solvents. The simple yet efficient approach of the formation of ion-gel and the dried elastomer allows fast preparation of both gel-like and solid-state elastic materials for various applications where recyclability is required.

Lattice animals in diffusion limited binary colloidal system

In a soft matter system, controlling the structure of the amorphous materials has been a key challenge. In this work, we have modeled irreversible diffusion limited cluster aggregation of binary colloids, which serves as a model for chemical gels. Irreversible aggregation of binary colloidal particles leads to the formation of a percolating cluster of one species or both species which are also called bigels. Before the formation of the percolating cluster, the system forms a self-similar structure defined by a fractal dimension. For a one component system when the volume fraction is very small, the clusters are far apart from each other and the system has a fractal dimension of 1.8. Contrary to this, we will show that for the binary system, we observe the presence of lattice animals which has a fractal dimension of 2 irrespective of the volume fraction. When the clusters start inter-penetrating, we observe a fractal dimension of 2.5, which is the same as in the case of the one component system. We were also able to predict the formation of bigels using a simple inequality relation. We have also shown that the growth of clusters follows the kinetic equations introduced by Smoluchowski for diffusion limited cluster aggregation. We will also show that the chemical distance of a cluster in the flocculation regime will follow the same scaling law as predicted for the lattice animals. Further, we will also show that irreversible binary aggregation comes under the universality class of the percolation theory.

Supramolecular polymer networks: hydrogels and bulk materials

Supramolecular polymer networks are materials crosslinked by reversible supramolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonding or electrostatic interactions. Supramolecular materials show very interesting and useful properties resulting from their dynamic nature, such as self-healing, stimuli-responsiveness and adaptability. Here we will discuss recent progress in polymer-based supramolecular networks for the formation of hydrogels and bulk materials.

Recent trends in pH/thermo-responsive self-assembling hydrogels: from polyions to peptide-based polymeric gelators

In this article, we highlight some recent developments in "smart" physical hydrogels achieved by self-assembling of block type macromolecules. More precisely we focus on two interesting types of gelators namely conventional ionic (or ionogenic) block copolymers and peptide-based polymers having as a common feature their responsiveness to pH and/or temperature which are the main triggers used for potential biomedical applications. Taking advantage of the immense skills of conventional block copolymer hydrogelators, namely macromolecular design, self-assembling mechanism, gel rheological properties, responsiveness to various triggers and innovative applications, the development of novel self-assembling gelators, integrating the new knowledge emerging from the peptide-based systems, opens new horizons towards bio-inspired technologies.
