Influence of Ionic Species on the Microphase Separation Behavior of PCL-b-PEO/Salt Hybrids

PEO-Based Block Copolymer Electrolytes Containing Double Conductive Phases with Improved Mechanical and Electrochemical Properties

In this work, the advanced all solid-state block copolymer electrolytes (SBCPEs) for lithium-ion batteries with double conductive phases, poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(trimethyl-N-((2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-7-propyl)-ammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide) (PEO-b-PDM-dTFSI)/LiTFSI, were fabricated, in which the charged PDM-dTFSI block contained double quaternary ammonium cations and the PEO block was doped with LiTFSI. The disordered (DIS) and ordered lamellae (LAM) phase structures were achieved by adjusting the composition of the block copolymer and the doping ratio r. In addition, the presence of the hard PDM-dTFSI block and the formation of the LAM phase structure resulted in a good mechanical strength of the solid PEO-b-PDM-dTFSI/LiTFSI electrolyte, and it could maintain a high level of 10⁴ Pa at 100 °C, which was around 10,000 times stronger than that of the PEO/LiTFSI electrolyte. Based on the good mechanical and electrochemical properties, the PEO-b-PDM-dTFSI/LiTFSI SBCPE exhibited excellent long-term galvanostatic cycle performance, indicating the strong ability to suppress lithium dendrites.

Self-assembly of copper-free maltoheptaose-block-polystyrene nanostructured thin films in real and reciprocal space

The promising carbohydrate-based block copolymer maltoheptaose-block-polystyrene (MH-b-PS) has been used for high-performance memory transistors and next generation nanolithography. In order to realize the potential of MH-b-PS especially in microelectronic applications, we firstly improved its synthetic method for obtaining large amount of copper-free MH-b-PS. The main improvement relies on the removal of the residual copper catalyst by using a chelating resin. Then, the microphase separation of copper-free MH-b-PS in both thin film and bulk states under different solvent vapor annealing conditions were investigated comprehensively and compared with our previous report by using both real-space and reciprocal-space techniques. A phase transition of MH-b-PS from hexagonal close-packed horizontal cylinders to face-centered cubic were observed when increasing the amount of tetrahydrofuran in the mixture annealing solvent of tetrahydrofuran and H₂O. More details about self-assembled MH-b-PS nanostructures were analyzed by comparing grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering patterns with corresponding atomic force microscopy phase images.

Fabrication of Ordered Nanopattern by using ABC Triblock Copolymer with Salt in Toluene

Ordered nanopatterns of triblock copolymer polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine)-block- poly (ethylene oxide)(PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO) have been achieved by the addition of lithium chloride (LiCl). The morphological and structural evolution of PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO/LiCl thin films were systematically investigated by varying different experimental parameters, including the treatment for polymer solution after the addition of LiCl, the time scale of ultrasonic treatment and the molar ratio of Li⁺ ions to the total number of oxygen atoms (O) in PEO block and the nitrogen atoms (N) in P2VP block. When toluene was used as the solvent for LiCl, ordered nanopattern with cylinders or nanostripes could be obtained after spin-coating. The mechanism of nanopattern transformation was related to the loading of LiCl in different microdomains.

Composite Polymer Electrolytes: Nanoparticles Affect Structure and Properties

Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) can significantly improve the performance in electrochemical devices such as lithium-ion batteries. This review summarizes property/performance relationships in the case where nanoparticles are introduced to polymer electrolytes. It is the aim of this review to provide a knowledge network that elucidates the role of nano-additives in the CPEs. Central to the discussion is the impact on the CPE performance of properties such as crystalline/amorphous structure, dielectric behavior, and interactions within the CPE. The amorphous domains of semi-crystalline polymer facilitate the ion transport, while an enhanced mobility of polymer chains contributes to high ionic conductivity. Dielectric properties reflect the relaxation behavior of polymer chains as an important factor in ion conduction. Further, the dielectric constant (ε) determines the capability of the polymer to dissolve salt. The atom/ion/nanoparticle interactions within CPEs suggest ways to enhance the CPE conductivity by generating more free lithium ions. Certain properties can be improved simultaneously by nanoparticle addition in order to optimize the overall performance of the electrolyte. The effects of nano-additives on thermal and mechanical properties of CPEs are also presented in order to evaluate the electrolyte competence for lithium-ion battery applications.

Tiny nanoparticles of organometallic polymers through the direct disassembly-assisted synthesis strategy for hydrogen peroxide sensing
