Abstract
A water-soluble polymeric pyrene-based polythioacetal (PTA-Py) with thioacetal units in the main chain is simply synthesized by direct polycondensation of 3, 6-dioxa-1, 8-octanedithiol, 1-pyrene formaldehyde, and mPEG2k-SH. The probe PTA-Py shows a good fluorescence response to Hg2+ ions due to the Hg2+-promoted deprotection reaction of thioacetal groups to regenerate the original 1-pyrene formaldehyde compound. After adding Hg2+ to the PTA-Py solution, the fluorescence intensity (FI) gradually increases with increasing concentrations of Hg2+. Compared with other metal ions, the probe exhibits high sensitivity, good selectivity, and rapid response to Hg2+. The low detection limits are 12.3 nm in ethanol-PBS buffer and 13.3 nm in water, respectively. The results imply that the simply synthesized water-soluble polymeric probe had potential applications in the rapid detection of Hg2+ ions in aqueous solutions. Moreover, the polymeric PTA-Py shows high sensitivity for CH3Hg+ with detection limits of 26.5 nm in ethanol/PBS buffer. In addition, PTA-Py can efficiently detect Hg2+ ions in HeLa cells. The results demonstrate that a valuable method is developed for biocompatible polymeric sensors for Hg2+ ions in biological and environmental samples.

Abstract
A new Schiff base probe (QT) consisting of 8-aminoquinoline (Q) and thiophene-2-carboxaldehyde (T) moieties has been synthesized. QT undergoes chelation-enhanced fluorescence quenching when exposed to Hg2+ due to coordination by the sulfur and nitrogen atoms of QT thus forming a facile "turn-off" sensor. The formation of the chelation complex was confirmed by UV-visible absorption and emission spectral measurements, 1H NMR titration and density functional theory calculations. These studies revealed that the probe exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity towards Hg2+ in the presence of other common metal ions. A low detection limit of 23.4 nM was determined and a Job plot confirmed a 2:1 stoichiometry between QT and Hg2+. The potential utility of QT as a sensor for Hg2+ ions in human HeLa cells was determined by confocal fluorescence microscopy, and its suitability for use in the field with environmental samples was tested with Whatman filter paper strips.

Abstract
The sensitive detection and quantitative separation of toxic heavy metal ions in aqueous media are of great importance. In this study, a thermogelling poly(ε-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL-PEG-PCL) triblock copolymer (P1) was synthesized, and difluoroboron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) fluorophore integrated with thiosemicarbazide units was attached to the chain ends of P1 through consecutive post-polymerization modifications, leading to P4. P4 exhibited rapid and selective detection of Hg(II) in 100% aqueous media via turn-on fluorescence emission with a limit of detection (LOD) of as low as 0.461 μM. This turn-on emission behavior is attributed to the suppression of C˭N isomerization caused by the formation of a coordination complex between P4 and Hg(II) ions. The selective and quantitative removal of Hg(II) among various metal ions was achieved by trapping chelated Hg(II) ions inside the dehydrated P4 gel via thermo-controlled sol-gel-dehydrated gel transitions. Treating the Hg(II) ion-trapped dehydrated gels with sodium sulfide (Na2S) in acetone/water at room temperature led to HgS precipitates, and P4 in solution was dried and recycled. This recyclable thermoresponsive macromolecular probe is promising for not only Hg(II) detection but also its separation and removal from complex aqueous environments.

Abstract
By performing a single-atom replacement within common fluorophores, we have developed a facile and general strategy to prepare a broad-spectrum class of colorimetric and fluorogenic probes for the selective detection of mercury ions in aqueous environments. Thionation of carbonyl groups from existing fluorophore cores results in a great reduction of fluorescence quantum yield and loss of fluorescence emission. The resulting thiocaged probes are efficiently desulfurized to their oxo derivatives in the presence of mercury ions, leading to pronounced changes in chromogenic and fluorogenic signals. Because these probes exhibit high selectivity, excellent sensitivity, good membrane-permeability, and rapid responses towards mercury ions, they are suitable for visualization of mercury in both aqueous and intracellular environments.

Abstract
In present work, we designed and synthesized new chemosensor RPy, containing the rhodamine and 2,6-pyridinedicarboxaldehyde functionality, for the selective detection of mercury (II) (Hg2+) ion in aqueous DMSO solvents. The RPy acts as "turn ON" probe for Hg2+ ion with high selectivity and sensitivity over the series of other competing metal ions based on colorimetric and fluorimetric techniques. Due to the incorporation of two rhodamine moieties enhance the chelation sites for mercury binding, which reflects in the lowering of the detection limit up to 26 nM. The Job plot method confirms the 1:2 stoichiometric interactions between the RPy and Hg2+ ion. The formation of the chelation complex between RPy and Hg2+ ion with spirolactam ring opening was thoroughly investigated by absorption, emission, 1H NMR, and mass analysis. The detection of Hg2+ ion by RPy is retained at broad pH range 4-9. Further, the probe RPy is successfully explored to measure the contamination of Hg2+ ion in the real water samples using spike and recovery method.

Abstract
Developing a simple and cheap analytical method for the selective detection and quantitative separation of toxic ions present in aqueous media is the biggest challenge faced by the chemosensing research community. Here, a 5,5-difluoro-1,3,7,9-tetramethyl-10-phenyl-5 H-dipyrrolo-diazaborinine-derived water-soluble polymer integrated with thiosemicarbazone units was rationally designed and synthesized for the simultaneous detection and separation of Hg(II) ions in pure aqueous solution. The water-soluble polymer scaffold poly( N, N'-dimethyl acrylamide- co-5,5-difluoro-1,3,7,9-tetramethyl-10-phenyl-5 H-dipyrrolo-diazaborinine-2-carbaldehyde) was synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, followed by post-polymerization modification with thiosemicarbazide, leading to the formation of the target probe, P1. The nonemitting P1 exhibited bright yellow emission upon exposure to Hg(II) ions, with a limit of detection as low as 0.37 μM. This turn-on emission behavior triggered by Hg(II) ions might originate from the suppression of isomerization around the C═N bond of the thiosemicarbazone moiety caused by the formation of a coordination complex between P1 and Hg(II) ions. In addition, P1 displayed excellent selectivity toward Hg(II) ions over other metal cations. Finally, the selective removal of Hg(II) ions from an aqueous solution containing various metal ions was achieved by precipitation, which is probably caused by the fact that coordination complexes whereby Hg(II) ions acted as bridgeheads between P1 molecules had formed.

Abstract
By intelligent design, a new "turn-on" fluorescent probe (1-CN) was obtained based on the deprotection reaction of the dithioacetal promoted by Hg2+ ions, which could sense mercury ions sensitively and selectively, with the detection limit of 8×10(-7) M. Thanks to the apparent turn-on signal, 1-CN has been successfully applied to rapidly detect trace amounts of mercury ions as test strips and cell image.
