Structure and Dynamics Properties at Interphase Region in the Composite of Polystyrene and Cross-Linked Polystyrene Soft Nanoparticle

Advancing elastomer performance with dynamic bond networks in polymer-grafted single-chain nanoparticles: a molecular dynamics exploration

This research introduces a method to enhance the mechanical properties of elastomers by grafting polymer chains onto single-chain flexible nanoparticles (SCNPs) and incorporating dynamic functional groups. Drawing on developments in grafting polymers onto hard nanoparticle fillers, this method employs the distinct flexibility of SCNPs to diminish heterogeneity and enhance core size control. We use molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for a mesoscale analysis of structural properties, particularly the effects of dynamic functional group quantities and their distribution. The findings demonstrate that increased quantities of functional groups are correlated with enhanced mechanical strength and toughness, showing improved stress-strain responses and energy dissipation capabilities. Moreover, the uniformity in the distribution of these functional groups is crucial, promoting a more cohesive and stable dynamic bonding network. The insights gained from MD simulations not only advance our understanding of the microstructural control necessary for optimizing macroscopic properties, but also provide valuable guidance for the design and engineering of advanced polymer nanocomposites, thereby enhancing the material performance through strategic molecular design.

Microplastics trigger the Matthew effect on nitrogen assimilation in marine diatoms at an environmentally relevant concentration

Microplastics (MPs, diameter <5 mm) are widely distributed on Earth, especially in the oceans. Diatoms account for ∼40% of marine primary productivity and affect the global biogeochemical cycles of macroelements. However, the effects of MPs on marine nitrogen cycling remain poorly understood, particularly comparisons between nitrogen-replete and nitrogen-limited conditions. We found that MPs trigger the Matthew effect on nitrogen assimilation in diatoms, where MPs inhibited nitrogen assimilation under nitrogen-limited conditions while enhancing nitrogen metabolism under nitrogen-replete conditions in Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Nitrate reductase (NR) and nitrite reductase (NIR) are upregulated, but nitrate transporter (NRT) and glutamine synthetase (GS) are downregulated by MPs under nitrogen-limited conditions. In contrast, NR, NIR, and GS are all upregulated by MPs under nitrogen-replete conditions. MPs accelerate nitrogen anabolic processes with an increase in the accumulation of carbohydrates by 80.7 ± 7.9% and enhance the activities of key nitrogen-metabolizing enzymes (8.20-44.90%) under nitrogen-replete conditions. In contrast, the abundance of carbohydrates decreases by 22.0-34.4%, and NRT activity is inhibited by 79.0-86.5% in nitrogen-limited algae exposed to MPs. Metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses were performed to further explore the molecular mechanisms of reprogrammed nitrogen assimilation, including carbon metabolism, nitrogen transport and ammonia assimilation. The aforementioned spatial redistribution (e.g., the Matthew effect between nitrogen-replete and -limited conditions) of nitrogen assimilation highlights the potential risks of MP contamination in the ocean.

When does a macromolecule transition from a polymer chain to a nanoparticle?

Frequently, the defining characteristic of a nanoparticle is simply its size, where objects that are 1-100 nm are characterized as nanoparticles. However, synthetic and biological macromolecules, in particular high molecular weight chains, can satisfy this size requirement without providing the same phenomena as one would expect from a nanoparticle. At the same time, soft polymer nanoparticles are important in a broad range of fields, including understanding protein folding, drug delivery, vitrimers, catalysis and nanomedicine. Moreover, the recent flourish of all polymer nanocomposites has led to the synthesis of soft all-polymer nanoparticles, which emerge from internal crosslinking of a macromolecule. Thus, there exists a transition of an internally crosslinked macromolecule from a polymer chain to a nanoparticle as the amount of internal crosslinks increases, where the polymer chain exhibits different behavior than the nanoparticle. Yet, this transition is not well understood. In this work, we seek to address this knowledge gap and determine the transition of a macromolecule from a polymer chain to a nanoparticle as internal crosslinking increases. In this work, small angle neutron scattering (SANS) offers insight into the structure of polystyrene and poly(ethyl hexyl methacrylate) nanostructures in dilute solutions, with crosslinking densities that vary from 0.1 to 10.7%. Analyses of the SANS data provides structural characteristics to classify a nanostructure as chain-like or particle-like and identify a crosslinking dependent transition between the two morphologies. It was found that for both types of polymeric nanostructures, a crosslinking density of 0.81% (∼ a crosslink for every 1 in 125 monomers) or higher exhibit clear particle-like behavior. Lower crosslinking density nanostructures showed amounts of collapse similar to that of a star polymer (0.1% XL) or a random walk polymer chain (0.4% XL). Thus, the transition of an internally crosslinked macromolecule from a polymer chain to a nanoparticle is not an abrupt transition but occurs via the gradual contraction of the chain with incorporated crosslinks.

A possible strategy for generating polymer chains with an entanglement-free structure

We propose a possible strategy that may experimentally generate long polymeric chains with an entanglement-free structure. The basic idea is designing the conditions to restrict polymer chains from growing along the surface with an obviously concave curvature. This strategy is proved to effectively reduce the chance of forming both inter- and intra-molecular entanglements, which is quite similar to the self-avoiding random walking of chains on a two dimensional plane. We believe that this kind of chain growth strategy may supply a kind of possible explanation on the formation of the entanglement-free structure of chromosomes, which also have tremendously large molecular weight. Besides, this study also guides experimentalists on synthesizing specific entanglement-free functional polymeric or biological materials.

Disentangling Component Dynamics in an All-Polymer Nanocomposite Based on Single-Chain Nanoparticles by Quasielastic Neutron Scattering

We have investigated an all-polymer nanocomposite (NC) consisting of single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) immersed in a matrix of linear chains of their precursors (25/75% composition in weight). The SCNPs were previously synthesized via “click” chemistry, which induces intramolecular cross-links in the individual macromolecules accompanied by a slight shift (5–8 K) of the glass transition temperature toward higher values and a broadening of the dynamic response with respect to the raw precursor material. The selective investigation of the dynamics of the NC components has been possible by using properly isotopically labeled materials and applying quasielastic neutron scattering techniques. Results have been analyzed in the momentum transfer range where the coherent scattering contribution is minimal, as determined by complementary neutron diffraction experiments with polarization analysis. We observe the development of dynamic heterogeneity in the intermediate scattering function of the NC components, which grows with increasing time. Local motions in the precursor matrix of the NC are accelerated with respect to the reference bulk behavior, while the displacements of SCNPs’ hydrogens show enhanced deviations from Gaussian and exponential behavior compared with the pure melt of SCNPs. The resulting averaged behavior in the NC coincides with that of the pure precursor, in accordance with the macroscopic observations by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments.

Molecular simulation of the diffusion mechanism of nanorods in cross-linked networks

We study the diffusion of rod-shaped nanocarriers with different rigidities and aspect ratios in cross-linked networks using coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD) simulations. The diffusivity of the nanorods increases with a reduction in the rigidities of the nanorods and network, as well as with an increasing aspect ratio with respect to the same volume fraction of the nanorods. The nanorods show an anisotropic diffusion pathway through translocating along their major axes at short time scales, and the anisotropy of diffusion decreases at long time scales. Meanwhile, the diffusion of the nanorods shows a sub-diffusion regime that deviates from Brownian motion in most cases due to the trapping of the nanorods in a cage composed of the network. The nanorod could hop when it escapes from the cage and the hopping behavior depends on the rigidities of both the nanorod and network, as well as the local network density. The rotational motion of the trapped nanorod also enhances the probability of hopping. Our results may help in the understanding of the microscopic mechanism for the diffusion of rod-shaped and other relevant nanocarriers, in a cross-linked network environment.

Supercooled melt structure and dynamics of single-chain nanoparticles: A computer simulation study

By using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we have investigated the structure and dynamics of supercooled single-chain cross-linked nanoparticle (SCNP) melts having a range of cross-linking degrees ϕ. We find a nearly linear increase in glass-transition temperature (T_g) with increasing ϕ. Correspondingly, we have also experimentally synthesized a series of polystyrene-based SCNPs and have found that the measured T_g estimated from differential scanning calorimetry is qualitatively consistent with the trend predicted by our simulation estimates. Experimentally, an increase in T_g as large as ΔT_g = 61 K for ϕ = 0.36 is found compared with their linear chain counterparts, indicating that the changes in dynamics with cross-links are quite appreciable. We attribute the increase in T_g to the enlarged effective hard-core volume and the corresponding reduction in the free volume of the polymer segments. Topological constraints evidently frustrate the local packing. In addition, the introduction of intra-molecular cross-linking bonds slows down the structural relaxation and simultaneously enhances the local coupling motion on the length scales within SCNPs. Consequently, a more pronounced dynamical heterogeneity (DH) is observed for larger ϕ, as quantified by measuring the dynamical correlation length through the four-point susceptibility parameter, χ₄. The increase in DH is directly related to the enhanced local cooperative motion derived from intra-molecular cross-linking bonds and structural heterogeneity derived from the cross-linking process. These results shed new light on the influence of intra-molecular topological constraints on the segmental dynamics of polymer melts.

Insights from modeling into structure, entanglements, and dynamics in attractive polymer nanocomposites

Conformations, entanglements and dynamics in attractive polymer nanocomposites are investigated in this work by means of coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation, for both weak and strong confinements, in the presence of nanoparticles (NPs) at NP volume fractions φ up to 60%. We show that the behavior of the apparent tube diameter dapp in such nanocomposites can be greatly different from nanocomposites with nonattractive interactions. We find that this effect originates, based on a mean field argument, from the geometric confinement length dgeo at strong confinement (large φ) and not from the bound polymer layer on NPs (interparticle distance ID <2Rg) as proposed recently based on experimental measurements. Close to the NP surface, the entangled polymer mobility is reduced in attractive nanocomposites but still faster than the NP mobility for volume fractions beyond 20%. Furthermore, entangled polymer dynamics is hindered dramatically by the strong confinement created by NPs. For the first time using simulations, we show that the entangled polymer conformation, characterized by the polymer radius of gyration Rg and form factor, remains basically unperturbed by the presence of NPs up to the highest volume fractions studied, in agreement with various experiments on attractive nanocomposites. As a side-result we demonstrate that the loose concept of ID can be made a microscopically well defined quantity using the mean pore size of the NP arrangement.

Efficient Hybrid Particle-Field Coarse-Grained Model of Polymer Filler Interactions: Multiscale Hierarchical Structure of Carbon Black Particles in Contact with Polyethylene

In the present study, we propose, validate, and give first applications for large-scale systems of coarse-grained models suitable for filler/polymer interfaces based on carbon black (CB) and polyethylene (PE). The computational efficiency of the proposed approach, based on hybrid particle-field models (hPF), allows large-scale simulations of CB primary particles of realistic size (∼20 nm) embedded in PE melts. The molecular detailed models, here introduced, allow a microscopic description of the bound layer, through the analysis of the conformational behavior of PE chains adsorbed on different surface sites of CB primary particles, where the conformational behavior of adsorbed chains is different from models based on flat infinite surfaces. On the basis of the features of the systems, an optimized version of OCCAM code for large-scale (up to more than 8 million of beads) parallel runs is proposed and benchmarked. The computational efficiency of the proposed approach opens the possibility of a computational screening of the bound layer, involving the optimal combination of surface chemistry, size, and shape of CB aggregates and the molecular weight distribution of the polymers achieving an important tool to address the polymer/fillers interface and interphase engineering in the polymer industry.

Role of Interface Structure and Chain Dynamics on the Diverging Glass Transition Behavior of SSBR-SiO2-PIL Elastomers

Intermolecular interactions between the constituents of a polymer nanocomposite at the polymer-particle interface strongly affect the segmental mobility of polymer chains, correlated with their glass transition behavior, and are responsible for the improved dynamical viscoelastic properties. In this work, we emphasized on the evolution of characteristic interfaces and their dynamics in silica (SiO2 NP)-reinforced, solution-polymerized, styrene butadiene rubber (SSBR) composites, whose relative prevalence varied with the phosphonium ionic liquid (PIL) volume fraction, used as an interfacial modifier. The molecular origins of such interfaces were examined through systematic dielectric spectroscopy, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and dynamic-mechanical analyses. The PIL facilitated H-bonding, cation-π, surface-phenyl, and van der Waals interfacial interactions between SSBR and SiO2 NP, thereby regulating the polymer chain dynamics, orientation, and mean-square displacement. Specifically, the mass density profiles from MD simulations revealed the dynamic gradient of polymer chains in the interfacial region as a function of radial distance from the center of mass of the SiO2 NP surface. The results showed a structuring effect to result in well-resolved density peaks at specific radial distances with the tangential orientation of styrene monomers in the vicinity of the SiO2 NP surface. These domino effects highlighted strong interfacial interactions to have an indispensable effect on the viscoelastic performance and thermal motion of SSBR molecular chains, leading to a higher glass transition temperature (T g) by ∼15 K, validating the experimental data. More importantly, our results gave new insights into the fundamental understanding of the fact that the strength of intermolecular interactions induced by PIL at the polymer-particle interface is the key to control the α-relaxation dynamics and T g optimization, desired for specific applications.

The interfacial structure and dynamics in a polymer nanocomposite containing small attractive nanoparticles: a full atomistic molecular dynamics simulation study

We study the interfacial structure and dynamics of a polymer nanocomposite (PNC) composed of octaaminophenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OAPS) and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) by performing full atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. There are eight aminophenyl groups grafted on the surface of the OAPS particle and the particle has a size comparable to the Kuhn segment of P2VP. These aminophenyl groups can form hydrogen bonds (HBs) with pyridine rings from surrounding P2VP chains. We found that OAPS can form ∼2 HBs on average with surrounding polymer chains. The effect of the HBs is investigated in detail by either switching on or off these HBs in our simulation. By analyzing the interfacial static packing structure and dynamic properties, we demonstrate that the system has an ∼1 nm interface width, similar to the OAPS particle size. We also found that HBs can prevent the further penetration of polymers into the inner zone (grafting layer) of the OAPS, and therefore keep the P2VP chains in the outer layer (>1 nm), remaining bulk-like, which is well consistent with experimental results. In addition, we found that NP diffusion is coupled to the absorbed polymer chains, which also dramatically slows down the diffusion of polymer segments in return. The core-shell model in which the NP and absorbed polymers diffuse as a single object is validated here at the full atomistic level. These results provide atomistic insights into the unique structure and dynamics in the small attractive NP-polymer interfacial region. We hope these results will be helpful for the understanding of peculiar phenomena in attractive polymer nanocomposites containing small NPs.

Synthesis of Polymer Single-Chain Nanoparticle with High Compactness in Cosolvent Condition: A Computer Simulation Study

Polymeric single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) are soft nano-objects synthesized by intramolecular crosslinking of isolated single polymer chains. Syntheses of such SCNPs usually need to be performed in a dilute solution. In such a condition, the bonding probability of the two active crosslinking units at a short contour distance along the chain backbone is much higher than those which are far away from each other. Such a reaction condition often results in local spheroidization and, therefore, the formation of loosely packed structures. How to inhibit the local spheroidization and improve the compactness of SCNPs is thus a major challenge for the syntheses of SCNPs. In this study, computer simulations are performed and the fact that a precollapse of the polymer chain conformation in a cosolvent condition can largely improve the probability of the crosslinking reactions at large contour distances is demonstrated, favoring the formations of closely packed globular structures. As a result, the formed SCNPs can be more spherical and have higher compactness than those fabricated in ultradilute good solvent solution in a conventional way. It is believed this simulation work can provide a insight into the effective syntheses of SCNPs with spherical conformations and high compactness.

An unexpected N-dependence in the viscosity reduction in all-polymer nanocomposite

Adding small nanoparticles (NPs) into polymer melt can lead to a non-Einstein-like decrease in viscosity. However, the underlying mechanism remains a long-standing unsolved puzzle. Here, for an all-polymer nanocomposite formed by linear polystyrene (PS) chains and PS single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs), we perform large-scale molecular dynamics simulations and experimental rheology measurements. We show that with a fixed (small) loading of the SCNP, viscosity reduction (VR) effect can be largely amplified with an increase in matrix chain length \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$N$$\end{document}N, and that the system with longer polymer chains will have a larger VR. We demonstrate that such \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$N$$\end{document}N-dependent VR can be attributed to the friction reduction experienced by polymer segment blobs which have similar size and interact directly with these SCNPs. A theoretical model is proposed based on the tube model. We demonstrate that it can well describe the friction reduction experienced by melt polymers and the VR effect in these composite systems.

Addition of small nanoparticles into polymer melt can lead to decrease in viscosity but the underlying mechanism for such viscosity reduction remains unclear. Here, the authors investigate the reduction in viscosity by large-scale molecular dynamics simulation and experimental rheology measurements for an all-polymer nanocomposite formed by linear polystyrene chains and PS single-chain nanoparticle.

Anomalous diffusion of polystyrene from an attractive substrate based on all-atom simulation

The diffusion of polystyrene (PS) polymer chains from a hydroxy (-OH)-terminated Si surface with different grafting densities φG is studied based on all-atom simulation. Our particular attention is paid to the impact of the attractive substrate on the diffusive and configurational properties of PS. Our simulation results uncover a very novel and unexpected modification to polymer diffusion with the increment of φG, namely, the diffusion is slowed down most significantly from a substrate with moderate grafting densities, while in lower or full grafting cases, the diffusive dynamics is even facilitated rather than retarded. The underlying mechanism is investigated in terms of energy and conformational change in detail. Surprisingly, we obtain a consistent scenario for diffusion. Under moderate grafting densities, the energy required to be overcome for diffusion is relatively large. In addition, PS chains are more likely to be in a stretched configuration subject to a slower relaxation. These facts can account for the hindered diffusion. While under lower or full grafting densities, the energy required for diffusion becomes even smaller than the ungrafted situation. Also, PS chains prefer a shrinking configuration undergoing faster relaxation. Consequently, the diffusion of PS is reasonably promoted.

Miscibility and Nanoparticle Diffusion in Ionic Nanocomposites

We investigate the effect of various spherical nanoparticles in a polymer matrix on dispersion, chain dimensions and entanglements for ionic nanocomposites at dilute and high nanoparticle loading by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The nanoparticle dispersion can be achieved in oligomer matrices due to the presence of electrostatic interactions. We show that the overall configuration of ionic oligomer chains, as characterized by their radii of gyration, can be perturbed at dilute nanoparticle loading by the presence of charged nanoparticles. In addition, the nanoparticle's diffusivity is reduced due to the electrostatic interactions, in comparison to conventional nanocomposites where the electrostatic interaction is absent. The charged nanoparticles are found to move by a hopping mechanism.

Effect of copolymer sequence on structure and relaxation times near a nanoparticle surface

We simulate a simple nanocomposite consisting of a single spherical nanoparticle surrounded by coarse-grained polymer chains. The polymers are composed of two different monomer types that differ only in their interaction strengths with the nanoparticle. We examine the effect of adjusting copolymer sequence on the structure as well as the end-to-end vector autocorrelation, bond vector autocorrelation, and self-intermediate scattering function relaxation times as a function of distance from the nanoparticle surface. We show how the range and magnitude of the interphase of slowed dynamics surrounding the nanoparticle depend strongly on sequence blockiness. We find that, depending on block length, blocky copolymers can have faster or slower dynamics than a random copolymer. Certain blocky copolymer sequences lead to relaxation times near the nanoparticle surface that are slower than those of either homopolymer system. Thus, tuning copolymer sequence could allow for significant control over the nanocomposite behavior.

Interfacial Properties and Hopping Diffusion of Small Nanoparticle in Polymer/Nanoparticle Composite with Attractive Interaction on Side Group

The diffusion dynamics of fullerene (C 60 ) in unentangled linear atactic polystyrene (PS) and polypropylene (PP) melts and the structure and dynamic properties of polymers in interface area are investigated by performing all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. The comparison of the results in two systems emphasises the influence of local interactions exerted by polymer side group on the diffusion dynamics of the nanoparticle. In the normal diffusive regime at long time scales, the displacement distribution function (DDF) follows a Gaussian distribution in PP system, indicating a normal diffusion of C 60 . However, we observe multiple peaks in the DDF curve for C 60 diffusing in PS melt, which indicates a diffusion mechanism of hopping of C 60 . The attractive interaction between C 60 and phenyl ring side groups are found to be responsible for the observed hopping diffusion. In addition, we find that the C 60 is dynamically coupled with a subsection of a tetramer on PS chain, which has a similar size with C 60 . The phenyl ring on PS chain backbone tends to have a parallel configuration in the vicinity of C 60 surface, therefore neighbouring phenyl rings can form chelation effect on the C 60 surface. Consequently, the rotational dynamics of phenyl ring and the translational diffusion of styrene monomers are found to be slowed down in this interface area. We hope our results can be helpful for understanding of the influence of the local interactions on the nanoparticle diffusion dynamics and interfacial properties in polymer/nanoparticle composites.

The effect of size and concentration of nanoparticles on the glass transition temperature of polymer nanocomposites

Here we use model nanocomposites based on polystyrene and polyphenylene dendrimers to show both theoretically and experimentally that inclusion of rigid nanoparticles of 2.3–5 nm size into the polymer leads to a negligible glass transition temperature (T_g) increase.

Effect of Interfacial Bonding on Interphase Properties in SiO2/Epoxy Nanocomposite: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study

Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to explore the effect of interfacial bonding on the interphase properties of a nanocomposite system that consists of a silica nanoparticle and the highly cross-linked epoxy matrix. For the structural properties, results show that interfacial covalent bonding can broaden the interphase region by increasing the radial effect range of fluctuated mass density and oriented chains, as well as strengthen the interphase region by improving the thermal stability of interfacial van der Waals excluded volume and reducing the proportion of cis conformers of epoxy segments. The improved thermal stability of the interphase region in the covalently bonded model results in an increase of ∼21 K in the glass transition temperature (Tg) compared to that of the pure epoxy. It is also found that interfacial covalent bonding mainly restricts the volume thermal expansion of the model at temperatures near or larger than Tg. Furthermore, investigations from mean-square displacement and fraction of immobile atoms point out that interfacial covalent and noncovalent bonding induces lower and higher mobility of interphase atoms than that of the pure epoxy, respectively. The obtained critical interfacial bonding ratio when the interphase and matrix atoms have the same mobility is 5.8%. These results demonstrate that the glass transitions of the interphase and matrix will be asynchronous when the interfacial bonding ratio is not 5.8%. Specifically, the interphase region will trigger the glass transition of the matrix when the ratio is larger than 5.8%, whereas it restrains the glass transition of the matrix when the ratio is smaller than 5.8%.

Hybrid particle–field molecular dynamics simulation for polyelectrolyte systems

An effective hybrid computer simulation method combining molecular dynamics and self-consistent field theory is developed by including electrostatic interactions.
