RAFT Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Free-Base Porphyrin Cored Star Polymers

Reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) synthesis and self-assembly of free-base porphyrin cored star polymers are reported. The polymerization, in the presence of a free-base porphyrin cored chain transfer agent (CTA-FBP), produced porphyrin star polymers with controlled molecular weights and narrow polydispersities for a number of monomers includingN,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) and styrene (St). Well-defined amphiphilic star block copolymers, P-(PS-PDMA)4and P-(PDMA-PS)4(P: porphyrin), were also prepared and used for self-assembly studies. In methanol, a selective solvent for PDMA, spherical micelles were observed for both block copolymers as characterized by TEM. UV-vis studies suggested star-like micelles were formed from P-(PS-PDMA)4, while P-(PDMA-PS)4aggregated into flower-like micelles. Spectrophotometric titrations indicated that the optical response of these two micelles to external ions was a function of micellar structures. These structure-related properties will be used for micelle studies and functional material development in the future.

Termination in Semi-Dilute and Concentrated Polymer Solutions

The aim of the present work was to develop a deeper understanding into termination processes in the semi-dilute and concentrated regimes. The study was carried out to examine the effect of termination between linear polystyrene radical chains in linear, four-arm star, and six-arm star polymer systems using the reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer chain length-dependent termination method. In particular, the power-law dependencies of both chain length and polymer concentration were evaluated in the semi-dilute and concentrated regimes. We found that theoretical predictions based on the blob model were in good agreement with the experimentally observed evolution of the rate coefficient for biomolecular termination, kti,i(x), in the semi-dilute solution regime. In addition, solvent quality was found to decrease with increasing chain length, increasing polymer concentration and as a function of the matrix topology (i.e. for star polymer solutions). In the concentrated solution regime, the role of chain entanglements became evident by determining the conversion-dependent power-law exponent, βgel (where kt ≈ x–βgel), which increased in the order: linear < four-arm star < six-arm star polymer systems. Above the critical chain length ic, termination was found to be primarily conversion-dependent, implying entanglements dominated termination between linear polymeric radicals. Although this may suggest that reptation plays an important role, our data are in disagreement with this theory, suggesting that the polymer matrix cannot be regarded as static or immobile on the diffusion time scales for bimolecular termination.

Living Radical Polymerization by the RAFT Process - A Second Update

This paper provides a second update to the review of reversible deactivation radical polymerization achieved with thiocarbonylthio compounds (ZC(=S)SR) by a mechanism of reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) that was published in June 2005 (Aust. J. Chem. 2005, 58, 379–410). The first update was published in November 2006 (Aust. J. Chem. 2006, 59, 669–692). This review cites over 500 papers that appeared during the period mid-2006 to mid-2009 covering various aspects of RAFT polymerization ranging from reagent synthesis and properties, kinetics and mechanism of polymerization, novel polymer syntheses and a diverse range of applications. Significant developments have occurred, particularly in the areas of novel RAFT agents, techniques for end-group removal and transformation, the production of micro/nanoparticles and modified surfaces, and biopolymer conjugates both for therapeutic and diagnostic applications.

Adsorption of well-defined fluorine-containing polymers onto poly(tetrafluoroethylene)

Adsorption of well-defined fluorinated polymers onto clinically relevant poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) substrates offers an attractive method for modifying the surface properties of chemically inert PTFE. Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) was successfully used for synthesis of the polymers in this study: the homopolymers poly(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorostyrene) (PFS), poly(2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl acrylate) (PTFPA), and poly(2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl methacrylate) (PTFPMA) as well as their block copolymers with tert-butyl acrylate ( (t)BA). Water-soluble blocks were synthesized through the hydrolysis of the t-butyl side groups of P( (t)BA) to the corresponding carboxylic acid. Adsorption of selected polymers onto PTFE from a series of solvents (methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), dimethylformamide (DMF), fluorobenzene (FB), dichloromethane (DCM)) was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and sessile water drop measurements. The three homopolymers studied all adsorbed irreversibly (i.e., were not removed by washing) from organic solvents at ambient temperature. PFS displayed the highest adsorption, and was attributed to strong hydrophobic interactions. From angle-resolved XPS it was concluded that PFS became impregnated into the PTFE substrate down to depths of 100 A when using FB as a solvent. The carboxylic acid-containing block copolymers adsorbed more effectively from DMF (a good solvent for the poly(acrylic acid) block) compared to MEK. The resulting modified PTFE substrates displayed high stability with respect to desorption in aqueous solution, yet conformational changes of the adsorbed polymer resulted in a switchable hydrophobic-hydrophilic surface (in air or water, respectively). These results highlight the success of a facile and simple approach to irreversibly adsorb functional polymers to a nonfunctional fluorinated surface.
