Abstract
Reversible-deactivation radical polymerizations (RDRPs) have revolutionized synthetic polymer chemistry. Nowadays, RDRPs facilitate design and preparation of materials with controlled architecture, composition, and functionality. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has evolved beyond traditional polymer field, enabling synthesis of organic-inorganic hybrids, bioconjugates, advanced polymers for electronics, energy, and environmentally relevant polymeric materials for broad applications in various fields. This review focuses on the relation between ATRP technology and the 12 principles of green chemistry, which are paramount guidelines in sustainable research and implementation. The green features of ATRP are presented, discussing the environmental and/or health issues and the challenges that remain to be overcome. Key discoveries and recent developments in green ATRP are highlighted, while providing a perspective for future opportunities in this area.

Abstract
Thermo-responsive hyperbranched copoly(bis(N,N-ethyl acrylamide)/(N,N-methylene bisacrylamide)) (HPEAM-MBA) was synthesized by using reversible addition–fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization (RAFT). Interestingly, the zinc ion (Zn2+) was found to have a crucial influence on the lowest critical solution temperature (LCST) of the thermo-responsive polymer. The tetraphenylethylene (TPE) unit was then introduced onto the backbone of the as-prepared thermo-responsive polymer, which endows a Zn2+-responsive “turn-off” effect on the fluorescence properties. The TPE-bearing polymer shows a highly specific response over other metal ions and the “turn-off” response can even be tracked as the concentration of Zn2+ reduces to 2 × 10−5 M. The decrement of fluorescence intensity was linearly dependent on the concentration of Zn2+ in the range of 4–18 μmol L−1. The flexible, versatile and feasible approach, as well as the excellent detection performance, may generate a new type of Zn2+ probe without the tedious synthesis of the moiety bearing Zn2+ recognition units. A novel fluorescent HPEAM-TPEAH, possessing a highly selective and sensitive response to Zn2+, was synthesized using RAFT.![]()

Abstract
Superhydrophobic surfaces are generated by chemisorption on aluminum substrates of fluorinated block copolymers synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer in supercritical carbon dioxide. In an appropriate solvent, those block copolymers can form micelles with a fluorinated corona, which are grafted on the aluminum substrate thanks to the presence of carboxylic acid groups in the corona. Water contact angle and drop impact analysis were used to characterize the wettability of the films at the macroscale, and atomic force microscopy measurements provided morphological information at the micro- and nanoscale. The simple solvent casting of the polymer solution on a hydroxylated aluminum surface results in a coating with multiscale roughness, which is fully superhydrophobic over areas up to 4 cm(2).

Abstract
Recent advances in controlled polymerization have led to increased activity in controlled free radical polymerization in unconventional solvents. This short report focuses on the renewed interest in dispersion polymerization in supercritical CO2 brought about by the application of controlled free radical polymerization techniques. The emergence of novel and industrially-applicable materials is discussed, as well as the dependence of material properties and morphology upon factors such as surfactant type and how it is employed during the polymerization.
