Crystal Orientation Change and Its Origin in One-Dimensional Nanoconfinement Constructed by Polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) Single Crystal Mats

Self-Seeding Procedure for Obtaining Stacked Block Copolymer Lamellar Crystals in Solution

We examined the formation of self-seeded platelet-like crystals from polystyrene-block-polyethylene oxide (PS-b-PEO) diblock copolymers in toluene as a function of polymer concentration (c), crystallization temperature (TC), and self-seeding temperature (TSS). We showed that the number (N) of platelet-like crystals and their mean lateral size (L) can be controlled through a self-seeding procedure. As (homogeneous) nucleation was circumvented by the self-seeding procedure, N did not depend on TC. N increased linearly with c and decayed exponentially with TSS but was not affected significantly by the time the sample was kept at TSS. The solubility limit of PS-b-PEO in toluene (c*), which was derived from the linear extrapolation of Nc→ 0 and from the total deposited mass of the platelets per area (MCc→0), depended on TC. We have also demonstrated that at low N, stacks consisting of a (large) number (η) of uniquely oriented lamellae can be achieved. At a given TC, L was controlled by N and η as well as by ∆c=c−c∗. Thus, besides being able to predict size and number of platelet-like crystals, the self-seeding procedure also allowed control of the number of stacked lamellae in these crystals.

Preparation of well-defined 2D-lenticular aggregates by self-assembly of PNIPAM-b-PVDF amphiphilic diblock copolymers in solution

PNIPAM-b-PVDF amphiphilic block copolymers were synthesized via RAFT polymerization in dimethyl carbonate. These block copolymers were able to self-assemble into various morphologies such as spherical, crumpled, lamellar and lenticular 2D aggregates.

Evaluation of Self-Assembly Pathways to Control Crystallization-Driven Self-Assembly of a Semicrystalline P(VDF-co-HFP)-b-PEG-b-P(VDF-co-HFP) Triblock Copolymer

To date, amphiphilic block copolymers (BCPs) containing poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropene) (P(VDF-co-HFP)) copolymers are rare. At moderate content of HFP, this fluorocopolymer remains semicrystalline and is able to crystallize. Amphiphilic BCPs, containing a P(VDF-co-HFP) segment could, thus be appealing for the preparation of self-assembled block copolymer morphologies through crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) in selective solvents. Here the synthesis, characterization by 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopies, GPC, TGA, DSC, and XRD; and the self-assembly behavior of a P(VDF-co-HFP)-b-PEG-b-P(VDF-co-HFP) triblock copolymer were studied. The well-defined ABA amphiphilic fluorinated triblock copolymer was self-assembled into nano-objects by varying a series of key parameters such as the solvent and the non -solvent, the self-assembly protocols, and the temperature. A large range of morphologies such as spherical, square, rectangular, fiber-like, and platelet structures with sizes ranging from a few nanometers to micrometers was obtained depending on the self-assembly protocols and solvents systems used. The temperature-induced crystallization-driven self-assembly (TI-CDSA) protocol allowed some control over the shape and size of some of the morphologies.

1D vs. 2D shape selectivity in the crystallization-driven self-assembly of polylactide block copolymers

2D materials such as graphene, LAPONITE® clays or molybdenum disulfide nanosheets are of extremely high interest to the materials community as a result of their high surface area and controllable surface properties. While several methods to access 2D inorganic materials are known, the investigation of 2D organic nanomaterials is less well developed on account of the lack of ready synthetic accessibility. Crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) has become a powerful method to access a wide range of complex but precisely-defined nanostructures. The preparation of 2D structures, however, particularly those aimed towards biomedical applications, is limited, with few offering biocompatible and biodegradable characteristics as well as control over self-assembly in two dimensions. Herein, in contrast to conventional self-assembly rules, we show that the solubility of polylactide (PLLA)-based amphiphiles in alcohols results in unprecedented shape selectivity based on unimer solubility. We use log Poct analysis to drive solvent selection for the formation of large uniform 2D diamond-shaped platelets, up to several microns in size, using long, soluble coronal blocks. By contrast, less soluble PLLA-containing block copolymers yield cylindrical micelles and mixed morphologies. The methods developed in this work provide a simple and consistently reproducible protocol for the preparation of well-defined 2D organic nanomaterials, whose size and morphology are expected to facilitate potential applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering and in nanocomposites.

Crystallization behavior of crystalline/crystalline polymer blends under confinement in electrospun nanofibers of polystyrene/poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(ε-caprolactone) ternary mixtures

We have studied the crystallization behavior of crystalline/crystalline blends of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) in electrospun nanofibers fabricated from ternary blends of polystyrene (PS), PEO, and PCL, where PS was present as the majority component. It was demonstrated previously that PEO in PS/PEO binary blend nanofibers with a low PEO weight fraction (≦0.2) crystallized predominantly through homogenous nucleation due to the small PEO domain size which excluded the presence of heterogeneities (Soft Matter, 2016, 12, 5110). Here, it was found that PCL in PS/PCL binary blend nanofibers exhibited similar behavior, but at a much lower weight fraction of PCL (≦0.1) due to the presence of an inherently higher concentration of heterogeneities in the PCL homopolymer. In the PS/PEO/PCL ternary blend nanofibers, where the combined weight fraction of PEO and PCL was kept at 0.2 or less, the crystallization of the two components took place separately through both heterogeneous and homogenous nucleation mechanisms. The phase segregated crystallization behavior was further confirmed by the melting behavior of the blend nanofibers and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements. Most significantly, the homogenous nucleation of both PEO and PCL was suppressed whereas the heterogeneous nucleation was enhanced in the ternary blend nanofibers even at very low weight fraction of PEO or PCL. This was plausibly attributed to the coupling between the crystallization and the liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) of the PEO/PCL mixture dispersed in the PS matrix during non-isothermal cooling of the blend nanofibers. Furthermore, it was observed that thermal treatment of the PS/PEO/PCL blend nanofibers above the glass transition temperature of PS further promoted the heterogeneous nucleation-initiated crystallization of PEO because of a complex interplay between Plateau-Rayleigh instability-induced domain breakup and its further coalescence and demixing within the PEO/PCL domains embedded in the PS matrix.

Corona Liquid Crystalline Order Helps to Form Single Crystals When Self-Assembly Takes Place in the Crystalline/Liquid Crystalline Block Copolymers

Crystalline/ionic liquid crystalline block copolymers (BCPs) with various compositions have been successfully prepared by sequential reactions. The effect of corona liquid crystalline order on self-assembly of BCPs in selective solvent is investigated in detail. It is found that two-dimensional single crystals with well-developed shapes are formed when the liquid crystalline order is present. By contrast, ill-developed platelets with small size or one-dimensional worm-like micelles are assembled if the liquid crystalline order of the corona segments is lost. It is speculated that the preferred parallel arrangement of liquid crystalline block enables it to expose more growth front of crystals. Accordingly, epitaxial crystallization will proceed readily, leading to fabrication of the well-defined single crystals.

Crystallization behaviour of poly(ethylene oxide) under confinement in the electrospun nanofibers of polystyrene/poly(ethylene oxide) blends

We have studied the confined crystallization behaviour of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in the electrospun nanofibers of the phase-separated blends of polystyrene (PS) and PEO, where PS was present as the major component. The size and shape of PEO domains in the nanofibers were considerably different from those in the cast films, presumably because of the nano-dimensions of the nanofibers and the extensional forces experienced by the polymer solution during electrospinning. The phase-separated morphology in turn influenced the crystallization behaviour of PEO in the blend nanofibers. At a PEO weight fraction of ≥0.3, crystallization occurred through a heterogeneous nucleation mechanism similar to that in cast blend films. However, as the PEO weight fraction in the blend nanofibers was reduced from 0.3 to 0.2, an abrupt transformation of the nucleation mechanism from the heterogeneous to predominantly homogenous type was observed. The change in the nucleation mechanism implied a drastic reduction of the spatial continuity of PEO domains in the nanofibers, which was not encountered in the cast film. The melting temperature and crystallinity of the PEO crystallites developed in the nanofibers were also significantly lower than those in the corresponding cast films. The phenomena observed were reconciled by the morphological observation, which revealed that the phase separation under the radial constraint of the nanofibers led to the formation of small-sized fibrillar PEO domains with limited spatial connectivity. The thermal treatment of the PS/PEO blend nanofibers above the glass transition temperature of PS induced an even stronger confinement effect on PEO crystallization.

Single chain diffusion of poly(ethylene oxide) in its monolayers before and after crystallization

Lateral diffusion of single chain related to the crystallization process of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in its monolayers on silica surfaces is studied by single molecule fluorescence microscopy and single molecule tracking techniques. Diffusion of PEO chains is observed in the supercooled state before crystallization as well as in the noncrystalline regions after crystallization. In the postcrystallization monolayers, the diffusion coefficient of PEO chains is an order of magnitude lower than that in the supercooled state before crystallization. The origin is attributed to the change of polymer surface concentration due to the consumption of polymer molecules in the crystal formation. This is supported by the results showing a monotonous decrease of diffusion coefficient with the thickness decrease of the monolayer in its supercooled state. The PEO chains take a more flattened conformation under lower surface concentration and stick stronger to the surface. As a consequence, the diffusion rate is reduced. The results clearly demonstrate a strong mutual effect between the crystallization process and the mass transportation for the polymer crystallization under surface confinement.
