Effects of Pairwise, Self-Associating Functional Side Groups on Polymer Solubility, Solution Viscosity, and Mist Control

Universality of the collapse transition of sticky polymers

The universality of the swelling of the radius of gyration of a homopolymer relative to its value in the θ state, independent of polymer-solvent chemistry, in the crossover regime between θ and athermal solvent conditions, is well known. Here we study, by Brownian dynamics, a polymer model where a subset of monomers is labelled as "stickers". The mutual interaction of the stickers is more attractive than those of the other ("backbone") monomers, and has an additional important characteristic of "functionality" φ, i.e., the maximum number of stickers that can locally bind to a given sticker. A saturated bond formed in this manner remains bound until it breaks due to thermal fluctuations, a requirement which can be viewed as an additional Boolean degree of freedom that describes the bonding. This, in turn, makes the question of the order of the collapse transition a non-trivial one. Nevertheless, for the parameters that we have studied (in particular, φ = 1), we find a standard second-order θ collapse, using a renormalised solvent quality parameter that takes into account the increased average attraction due to the presence of stickers. We examine the swelling of the radius of gyration of such a sticky polymer relative to its value in the altered θ state, using a novel potential to model the various excluded volume interactions that occur between the monomers on the chain. We find that the swelling of such sticky polymers is identical to the universal swelling of homopolymers in the thermal crossover regime. Additionally, for our model, the Kuhn segment length under θ conditions is found to be the same for chains with and without stickers.

Megasupramolecules for safer, cleaner fuel by end association of long telechelic polymers

We used statistical mechanics to design polymers that defy conventional wisdom by self-assembling into “megasupramolecules” (≥5000 kg/mol) at low concentration (≤0.3 weight percent). Theoretical treatment of the distribution of individual subunits—end-functional polymers—among cyclic and linear supramolecules (ring-chain equilibrium) predicts that megasupramolecules can form at low total polymer concentration if, and only if, the backbones are long (>400 kg/mol) and end-association strength is optimal. Viscometry and scattering measurements of long telechelic polymers having polycyclooctadiene backbones and acid or amine end groups verify the formation of megasupramolecules. They control misting and reduce drag in the same manner as ultralong covalent polymers. With individual building blocks short enough to avoid hydrodynamic chain scission (weight-average molecular weights of 400 to 1000 kg/mol) and reversible linkages that protect covalent bonds, these megasupramolecules overcome the obstacles of shear degradation and engine incompatibility.

Supramolecular polymer gels with potential model-network structure

Supramolecular polymer networks with different strengths of transient connectivity can be formed with nanometer-scale topologies close to those of regular model networks by transition-metal complexation of monodisperse star-shaped building blocks with terpyridine endgroups.

Shear and extensional rheology of cellulose/ionic liquid solutions

In this study, we characterize the shear and extensional rheology of dilute to semidilute solutions of cellulose in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIAc). In steady shear flow, the semidilute solutions exhibit shear thinning, and the high-frequency complex modulus measured in small amplitude oscillatory shear flow exhibits the characteristic scaling expected for solutions of semiflexible chains. Flow curves of the steady shear viscosity plotted against shear rate closely follow the frequency dependence of the complex viscosity acquired using oscillatory shear, thus satisfying the empirical Cox-Merz rule. We use capillary thinning rheometry (CaBER) to characterize the relaxation times and apparent extensional viscosities of the semidilute cellulose solutions in a uniaxial extensional flow that mimics the dynamics encountered in the spin-line during fiber spinning processes. The apparent extensional viscosity and characteristic relaxation times of the semidilute cellulose/EMIAc solutions increase dramatically as the solutions enter the entangled concentration regime at which fiber spinning becomes viable.
