Abstract
An overview of the methodologies to elucidate the microstructure of copolymers of ethylene and cyclic olefins through 13C Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis is given. 13C NMR spectra of these copolymers are quite complex because of the presence of stereogenic carbons in the monomer unit and of the fact that chemical shifts of these copolymers do not obey straightforward additive rules. We illustrate how it is possible to assign 13C NMR spectra of cyclic olefin-based copolymers by selecting the proper tools, which include synthesis of copolymers with different comonomer content and by catalysts with different symmetries, the use of one- or two-dimensional NMR techniques. The consideration of conformational characteristics of copolymer chain, as well as the exploitation of all the peak areas of the spectra by accounting for the stoichoimetric requirements of the copolymer chain and the best fitting of a set of linear equation was obtained. The examples presented include the assignments of the complex spectra of poly(ethylene-co-norbornene (E-co-N), poly(propylene-co-norbornene (P-co-N) copolymers, poly(ethylene-co-4-Me-cyclohexane)s, poly(ethylene-co-1-Me-cyclopentane)s, and poly(E-ter-N-ter-1,4-hexadiene) and the elucidation of their microstructures.

Abstract
Copolymerizations of ethylene with vinyltrialkoxysilanes are reported using both a "traditional" cationic Pd(II) aryldiimine catalyst, t-1 (aryl = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl), and a "sandwich-type" aryldiimine catalyst, s-2 (aryl = 8-tolylnaphthyl). Incorporation levels of vinyltrialkoxysilanes between 0.25 and 2.0 mol % were achieved with remarkably little rate retardation relative to ethylene homopolymerizations. In the case of the traditional catalyst system, molecular weights decrease as the level of comonomer increases and only one trialkoxysilyl group is incorporated per chain. Molecular weight distributions of ca. 2 are observed. For the sandwich catalyst, higher molecular weights are observed with many more trialkoxysilyl groups incorporated per chain. Polymers with molecular weight distributions of ca. 1.2-1.4 are obtained. Detailed NMR mechanistic studies have revealed the formation of intermediate π-complexes of the type (diimine)Pd(alkyl)(vinyltrialkoxysilane)+. 1,2-Migratory insertions of these complexes occur with rates similar to ethylene insertion and result in formation of observable five-membered chelate intermediates. These chelates are rapidly opened with ethylene forming alkyl ethylene complexes, a requirement for chain growth. An unusual β-silyl elimination mechanism was shown to be responsible for chain transfer and formation of low molecular weight copolymers in the traditional catalyst system, t-1. This chain transfer process is retarded in the sandwich system. Relative binding affinities of ethylene and vinyltrialkoxysilanes to the cationic palladium center have been determined. The quantitative mechanistic studies reported fully explain the features of the bulk polymerization results.

Abstract
Recent efforts concerning nonbridged half-titanocenes containing anionic donor ligand of the type, Cp'TiX(2)(Y) [Cp' = cyclopentadienyl group; X = halogen, alkyl; Y = anionic ancillary donor ligands such as aryloxo, ketimide etc.], as new types of olefin polymerisation catalysts have been reviewed. It has been demonstrated that these complexes displayed unique characteristics especially for ethylene copolymerisation affording new polymers by efficient incorporation of bulky olefins (so called "traditionally unreactive" monomers in transition metal catalysed coordination polymerisation), that have not been attained by the ordinary catalysts.

Abstract
Cp*TiCl(2)(L) [L = C(3)H(3)N(2) (1), 3,5-Me(2)C(3)HN(2) (2) and 3,5-(i)Pr(2)C(3)HN(2) (3)], and Cp*Ti(C(3)H(3)N(2))(3) (4) were prepared in moderate yields by treating Cp*TiCl(3) with the pyrazoles in the presence of Et(3)N or with their corresponding lithium salts in Et(2)O. The structures of 1 and 2 determined by X-ray crystallography indicate that these complexes fold a distorted tetrahedral geometry around Ti, and the pyrazolato ligands coordinate to Ti with eta(2)-N,N'-coordination mode. In contrast, one of the pyrazolato ligand in 4 coordinates to Ti with eta(1)-N-bonding, whereas the other two ligands were bound to Ti with eta(2)-N,N'-fashion. The Cp analogues, CpTiCl(2)(L) [L = C(3)H(3)N(2) (5), 3,5-Me(2)C(3)HN(2) (6), 3,5-(i)Pr(2)C(3)HN(2) (7), and 3,5-Ph(2)C(3)HN(2) (8)], were also prepared by the reaction of CpTiCl(3) with the corresponding lithium salts in Et(2)O or n-hexane. The crystallographic analyses of 5 and 6 revealed that the pyrazolato ligands coordinate to Ti with eta(2)-N,N'-coordination mode. These complexes (1-3, 5-8) exhibited moderate catalytic activities for ethylene polymerization in the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO), and the activities were highly affected by the substituent on the pyrazolato ligand employed. Complex 1 exhibited the highest activity affording polymer with uniform molecular weight distribution, suggesting that the polymerization proceeded with uniform catalytically active species. An increase in the steric bulk in the pyrazolato ligand led to a slight decrease in the activity by the Cp* analogues, whereas the activity by the Cp analogues increased upon increasing the steric bulk in the pyrazolato ligand employed.
