Abstract
A new approach to synthesis at the aminated glass surface of novel biocompatible polymeric nanolayers consisting of poly(N-methacryloyl-L-proline) brushes has been developed. Formation of the polymer nanolayers has been realized in several stages. At the first stage, the glass surface has been modified by aminosilane (APTEC), afterwards monolayer of the peroxide-containing initiator (PI) based on pyromellitic acid has been tethered to this aminated surface. The immobilized PI has been used further for initiation of the grafting "from the surface" polymerization of N-methacryloyl-L-proline for obtaining of the peptidomimetic polymer brushes. Features of the reactions, as well as optimal conditions for performing the process are highlighted in this work. Presented here poly(N-methacryloyl-L-proline) grafted brush coatings are promising material for numerous applications in nanomedicine, especially for production of implants and systems of the controlled interaction with proteins and cells.

Abstract
D- and L-arginine-based polyamidoamino acids, called D- and L-ARGO7, retain the chirality and acid/base properties of the parent -amino acids and show pH-dependent self-structuring in water. The ability of the ARGO7 chiral isomers to selectively interact with chiral biomolecules and/or surfaces was studied by choosing sodium deoxycholate (NaDC) as a model chiral biomolecule for its ability to self-assembly into globular micelles, showing enantio-selectivity. To this purpose, mixtures of NaDC with D-, L- or D,L-ARGO7, respectively, in water were analysed by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) at different levels of acidity expressed in terms of pD and concentrations. Differences in the CD spectra indicated chiral discrimination for NaDC/ARGO7 mixtures in the gel phase (pD 7.30) but not in the solution phase (pD 9.06). SANS measurements confirmed large scale structural perturbation induced by this chiral discrimination in the gel phase yet no modulation of the structure in the solution phase. Together, these techniques shed light on the mechanism by which ARGO7 stereoisomers modify the morphology of NaDC micelles as a function of pH. This work demonstrates chirality-dependent interactions that drive structural evolution and phase behaviour of NaDC, opening the way for designing novel smart drug delivery systems.

Abstract
Polyamidoamino acids (PAACs) are synthetic polymers prepared by the polyaddition of bisacrylamides with natural α-amino acids, which in the process maintain both their chirality and their amphoteric nature. This polymerization process is slow, but has the merits of taking place in water and of neither involving protection/de-protection steps nor releasing by-products. However, it leads to polydisperse polymers and, using α-amino acids mixtures, random copolymers. This paper presents a step-by-step polyaddition process leading to homo- and copolymeric PAACs with controlled sequences and controlled molecular weights. It exploits the much different rates of the two Michael addition steps of NH2 of α-amino acids with acrylamides, and the low solubility in organic solvents of the α-amino acid addition products. As a proof of principle, the controlled synthesis of the PAAC from l-arginine and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide was performed up to a monodisperse product with 11 monomeric units and molecular weight 1840. This synthetic procedure was also tested with l-alanine. All intermediates were isolated and characterized. Noticeably, all of them were α,ω-difunctionalized with either acrylamides or sec-amines and were, in fact, building blocks with potential for preparing complex macromolecular architectures. In a first instance, copolymers with controlled sequences of amidoamine- and amidoamino acid units were prepared.

Abstract
This paper reports on synthesis, acid-base properties and self-structuring in water of chiral polyamidoamino acids (PAACs) obtained by polyaddition of N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide with l-alanine, l-valine and l-leucine (M-l-Ala, M-l-Val, M-l-Leu) with potential for selective interactions with biomolecules. The polymers maintained the acid-base properties of amino acids. In water, the circular dichroism spectra of PAACs revealed pH-dependent structuring in the range 3⁻11 and in the wavelength interval 200⁻280 nm. Taking as reference the values at pH 3, the differential molar ellipticities were plotted in the pH interval 3⁻11. Sigmoidal curves were obtained presenting inflection points at pH 8.1, 6.8 and 7.3 for M-l-Ala, M-l-Val and M-l-Leu, respectively, corresponding to the amine half-ionization. Theoretical modeling showed that PAACs assumed stable folded conformations. Intramolecular interactions led to transoid arrangements of the main chain reminiscent of protein hairpin motif. Oligomers with ten repeat units had simulated gyration radii consistent with the hydrodynamic radii obtained by dynamic light scattering.

Abstract
A powerful tool for controlling interfacial properties and molecular architecture relies on the tailored adsorption of stimuli-responsive block copolymers onto surfaces. Here, we use computational and experimental approaches to investigate the adsorption behavior of thermally responsive polypeptide block copolymers (elastin-like polypeptides, ELPs) onto silica surfaces, and to explore the effects of surface affinity and micellization on the adsorption kinetics and the resultant polypeptide layers. We demonstrate that genetic incorporation of a silica-binding peptide (silaffin R5) results in enhanced adsorption of these block copolymers onto silica surfaces as measured by quartz crystal microbalance and ellipsometry. We find that the silaffin peptide can also direct micelle adsorption, leading to close-packed micellar arrangements that are distinct from the sparse, patchy arrangements observed for ELP micelles lacking a silaffin tag, as evidenced by atomic force microscopy measurements. These experimental findings are consistent with results of dissipative particle dynamics simulations. Wettability measurements suggest that surface immobilization hampers the temperature-dependent conformational change of ELP micelles, while adsorbed ELP unimers (i.e., unmicellized block copolymers) retain their thermally responsive property at interfaces. These observations provide guidance on the use of ELP block copolymers as building blocks for fabricating smart surfaces and interfaces with programmable architecture and functionality.

Abstract
The behavior of pH-responsive polymers poly(N-methacryloyl-l-valine) (P1), poly(N-methacryloyl-l-phenylalanine) (P2), and poly(N-methacryloylglycyne-l-leucine) (P3) has been studied in the presence of the nonionic surfactant Brij98. The pure polymers phase-separate in an acidic medium with critical pHtr values of 3.7, 5.5, and 3.4, respectively. The addition of the surfactant prevents phase separation and promotes reorganization of polymer molecules. The nature of the interaction between polymer and surfactant depends on the amino acid structure in the side chain of the polymer. This effect was investigated by dynamic light scattering, isothermal titration calorimetry, electrophoretic measurements, small-angle neutron scattering, and infrared spectroscopy. Thermodynamic analysis revealed an endothermic association reaction in P1/Brij98 mixture, whereas a strong exothermic effect was observed for P2/Brij98 and P3/Brij98. Application of regular solution theory for the analysis of experimental enthalpograms indicated dominant hydrophobic interactions between P1 and Brij98 and specific interactions for the P2/Brij98 system. Electrophoretic and dynamic light scattering measurements support the applicability of the theory to these cases. The specific interactions can be ascribed to hydrogen bonds formed between the carboxylic groups of the polymer and the oligo(ethylene oxide) head groups of the surfactant. Thus, differences in polymer-surfactant interactions between P1 and P2 polymers result in different structures of polymer-surfactant complexes. Specifically, small-angle neutron scattering revealed pearl-necklace complexes and "core-shell" structures for P1/Brij98 and P2/Brij98 systems, respectively. These results may help in the design of new pH-responsive site-specific micellar drug delivery systems or pH-responsive membrane-disrupting agents.

Abstract
Poly(N-methacryloyl-l-leucine) (PNML) coatings were successfully fabricated via polymerization from peroxide initiator grafted to premodified glass substrate. Chemical composition and thickness of PNML coatings were determined using time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF- SIMS) and ellipsometry, respectively. PNML coatings exhibit thermal response of the wettability, between 4 and 28°C, which indicates a transition between hydrated loose coils and hydrophobic collapsed chains. Morphology of the PNML coating was observed with the AFM, transforming with increasing temperature from initially relatively smooth surface to rough and more structured surface. Protein adsorption observed by fluorescence microscopy for model proteins (bovine serum albumin and lentil lectin labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate) at transition from 5 to 25°C, showed high affinity of PNML coating to proteins at all investigated temperatures and pH. Thus, PNML coating have significant potential for medical and biotechnological applications as protein capture agents or functional replacements of antibodies ("plastic antibodies"). The high proliferation growth of the human embryonic kidney cell (HEK 293) onto PNML coating was demonstrated, indicating its excellent cytocompatibility.

Abstract
We studied the hydration of a temperature-responsive polymer containing L-proline moieties (poly(acryloyl-L-proline methyl ester), PAProM) by using infrared spectroscopy. Red shifts of ν(C-H) bands and blue shifts of amide and ester carbonyl bands of PAProM during temperature-induced phase separation indicate that the alkyl, amide, and ester groups are partially dehydrated. The population of the amide carbonyls forming hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) with two water molecules decreased from 63 to 33%, while that of the ester carbonyls forming one H bonding decreased from 100 to 84%. We labeled the methyl groups of PAProM by introducing deuterium (poly(acryloyl-L-proline methyl-d3 ester, PAProMd3) to clarify hydration change of the labeled groups. Red shifts of three ν(C-D) bands appearing at 2000-2200 cm(-1) clearly showed that the methyl groups at the end of side chains also dehydrated as well as the alkyl groups on the main chain. As for the effects of additives, methanol raised the phase separation temperature (Tp) of PAProM. The IR spectra show that the average number of H bonds to the amide and ester carbonyls decreases with increasing methanol concentration and that the water molecules surrounding the alkyl groups of PAProM are replaced by methanol molecules. The increase in Tp suggests that the favorable effect of the latter is superior to the unfavorable effect of the former. On the other hand, malic acid (MA) reduced Tp of PAProM. Moreover, a chiral interaction occurs; that is, Tp was lower in the presence of d-isomer than L-isomer. The analysis of the amide band revealed that the d-isomer associates more effectively with the amide carbonyls of PAProM than the L-isomer does.

Abstract
Well-defined homo and mPEGylated block (co)polymers of the commercially available unprotected 4-vinylphenylboronic acid (4-VBA) monomer are reported based on reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The polymerization kinetics are studied in detail for homo and block (co)polymerizations with different chain transfer agents (CTAs) to optimize the preparation of well-defined polymer structures, eventually leading to comparatively low dispersities (Đ ≤ 1.25). Subsequently, block (co)polymers with methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) mPEG-b-P(4-VBA) are prepared using a mPEG-functionalized CTA. The formed block copolymer mPEG114 -b-P(4-VBA)30 is demonstrated to be pH and glucose responsive as its micellization behavior is dictated by pH as well as the presence of glucose. The glucose-responsive pH window of mPEG114 -b-P(4-VBA)30 is found to be pH 9-10 based on the DLS and TEM measurement.

Abstract
Interest in thermoresponsive polymers has steadily grown over many decades, and a great deal of work has been dedicated to developing temperature sensitive macromolecules that can be crafted into new smart materials. However, the overwhelming majority of previously reported temperature-responsive polymers are based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), despite the fact that a wide range of other thermoresponsive polymers have demonstrated similar promise for the preparation of adaptive materials. Herein, we aim to highlight recent results that involve thermoresponsive systems that have not yet been as fully considered. Many of these (co)polymers represent clear opportunities for advancements in emerging biomedical and materials fields due to their increased biocompatibility and tuneable response. By highlighting recent examples of newly developed thermoresponsive polymer systems, we hope to promote the development of new generations of smart materials.

Dual-stimuli responsive behaviors of diblock polyampholyte PDMAEMA-b-PAA in aqueous solution. J Colloid Interface Sci 2011; 356:557-65. Abstract
Two poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(acrylic acid) diblock copolymers, PDMAEMA(84)-b-PAA(18) and PDMAEMA(50)-b-PAA(18), were synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and their dual-stimuli responsive behaviors to the changes in temperature and pH in aqueous solutions were investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), (1)H NMR spectroscopy and surface tension measurement. Different from PDMAEMA(84)-b-PAA(18) solutions where no aggregation is observed between pH 7.0 and 9.5, the PDMAEMA(50)-b-PAA(18) aggregates can exist in this broad pH range due to the hydrophobic interactions among the charge-balanced polyampholyte chains. At high pH, e.g., 11.0, the DMAEMA segments collapse to form the core of micelles due to the hydrophobic property of the de-protonized DMAEMA stabilized with the highly ionized AA segments on the surface of the micelles upon heating. At pH around the IEP, e.g., 9.5, large micelles can be formed in PDMAEMA(84)-b-PAA(18) solution upon heating, just like that at pH 11.0, while PDMAEMA(50)-b-PAA(18) first formed the micelles due to the electrostatic attraction between ionized AA segments and protonated DMAEMA segments, but the aggregation of the micelles was hardly happened upon heating due to the smaller DMAEMA segment. Moreover, LCST can be exactly estimated by surface tension experiment.

Abstract
The self-assembly and pH- and thermo-sensitivities properties of hydroxypropyl cellulose-graft-poly(N,N-dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate) (HPC-g-PDMAEMA) copolymers in aqueous solutions were investigated by transmittance, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and (1)H NMR spectroscopy. Micelles with different structure can be formed by varying either pH value or temperature. At low pH, e.g., 3.0, the HPC backbone of the copolymer collapse to form the core of micelles stabilized with protonated PDMAEMA side chains on the surface of the micelles upon heating. At the medium pH, e.g., 8.1, both HPC backbone and PDMAEMA side chains collapse upon heating to form unstable aggregates. At high pH, e.g., 12.3, PDMAEMA side chains collapse first to form the core of micelles stabilized with HPC chains upon heating. Further heating the copolymer solution at this pH leads to the aggregation of the micelles due to the collapse of the shell HPC chains. The thermal sensitivity of the HPC-g-PDMAEMA copolymers is reversible.
