Abstract
Molecular systems with intense exciplex luminescence are promising for the creation of OLEDs and light-transforming materials. The luminescent properties of difluoroboron meta- and para-nitrodibenzoylmethanates (1 and 2) were studied by the steady-state and time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy methods and quantum chemistry simulation. The influence of the position of the nitro group on the spectral properties of the complexes was revealed. The nitro group withdraws the electron density upon photoexcitation in the para-isomer in contrast to the meta-isomer. The bond order of the CC bond between the phenyl and chelate rings decreases in the excited relaxed state of 2, which leads to rotation of the substituent and a low quantum yield. Formation of exciplexes of 1 and 2 in benzene, toluene and polystyrene was found. The formation of the ground and excited-state electron donor-acceptor complexes based on difluoroboron nitrodibenzoylmethanates and benzene was revealed. The TDDFT method showed that the complexes are characterized by the presence of short contacts between the fluorine atom of the dye molecule and the hydrogen atoms of the aromatic hydrocarbon molecule. These contacts shorten during the transition from the ground state to the excited state. Polymeric compositions based on polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) doped with 1 and 2 were obtained. The luminescence intensity of dyes 1 and 2 increases during the transition from PMMA to PS. A significant bathochromic shift of the luminescence maximum of 1 is observed, which is associated with the formation of exciplexes and triplexes. The obtained polymeric materials are promising for the development of optical smart materials.

Abstract
Lipid nanovesicles (LNVs) and polymer nanovesicles (PNVs), also known as liposomes and polymersomes, are becoming increasingly vital in global health. However, the two major classes of nanovesicles both exhibit their own issues that significantly limit potential applications. Here, by covalently attaching a naturally occurring phosphate "lipid head" and a synthetic polylactide "polymer tail" via facile ring-opening polymerization on a 500-gram scale, a type of "chimeric" nanovesicles (CNVs) can be easily produced. Compared to LNVs, the reported CNVs exhibit reduced permeability for small and large molecules; on the other hand, the CNVs are less hydrophobic and exhibit enhanced tolerance toward proteins in buffer solutions without the need for hydrophilic polymeric corona such as poly(ethylene glycol), in contrast to conventional PNVs. The proof-of-concept in vitro delivery experiments using hydrophilic solutions of fluorescein-PEG, rhodamine-PEG, and anti-cancer drug doxorubicin demonstrate that these CNVs, as a structurally diverse class of nano-materials, are highly promising as alternative carriers for therapeutic molecules in translational nanomedicine. Abstract
In this work, the phosphorescence mechanism of (E)-3-(((4-nitrophenyl)imino)methyl)-2H-thiochroman-4-olate-BF2 compound (S-BF2) is investigated theoretically. The phosphorescence of S-BF2 has been reassigned to the second triplet state (T2) by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method combined with the multi-configurational pair density functional theory (MCPDFT) to approach the limit of theoretical accuracy. The calculated radiative and non-radiative rate constants support the breakdown of Kasha's rule further. Our conclusion contradicts previous reports that phosphorescence comes from the first triplet state (T1). Based on the revised phosphorescence mechanism, we have purposefully designed some novel compounds in theory to enhance the phosphorescence efficiency from T2 by replacing substitute groups in S-BF2. Overall, both S-BF2 and newly designed high-efficiency molecules exhibit anti-Kasha T2 phosphorescence instead of the conventional T1 emission. This work provides a useful guidance for future design of high-efficiency green-emitting phosphors.

Abstract
Electrostatic interactions between a quaternary pyridyl-β-diketonate and anionic charged nanosheets were observed to produce a highly emissive dispersion in a rich water solution. A greater fluorescence quantum yield of approximately 50% was obtained when a luminogenic β-diketonate, 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-(3-hydroxyethyl-pyridinium bromide)-1,3-propandione (prepared by the Claisen condensation reaction and subsequent quaternization), was molecularly dispersed and enclosed by a couple of atomically flat ultrathin (approximately 1.0 nm) silicate sheets of anionic layered clay. By accommodating β-diketonate into a narrow interlamellar space (approximately 0.4 nm distance), the molecular motion was suppressed, as confirmed by a smaller non-radiative relaxation rate constant, which was obtained by time-resolved luminescence and quantum yield measurements. Because the dense packing of β-diketonate quenched the excited state, the isolation of luminogens by the co-adsorption of photochemical inert cations (tetramethylammonium and benzylammonium) was prevented by concentration quenching. A lower quantum yield was obtained by expanding the interlayer distance above 1.0 nm by co-adsorbing a photo-inactive water-soluble polymer, poly(vinylpyrrolidone). Therefore, the fixation and spatial separation of β-diketonate in the narrow interlayer space was determined to be essential for obtaining strong emission.

Abstract
The electronic structure and optical properties of the isomeric difluoroboron β-diketonates, 2,2-difluoro-4-methylnaphtho-[2,1-e]-1,3,2-dioxaborin (I) and 2,2-difluoro-4-methylnaphtho-[1,2-e]-1,3,2-dioxaborin (II), were studied by means of X-ray photoelectron, absorption and luminescence spectroscopies. The experimental results were interpreted using high-level ab initio quantum chemical computations, including the algebraic-diagrammatic construction method for the polarization propagator of the second and third orders (ADC(2) and ADC(3)), the outer-valence Green's function (OVGF) method, and the time-dependent density functional (TDDFT) approach. The X-ray photoelectron measurements were assigned in the entire energy range using the results of the Kohn-Sham orbital calculations which employed the B3LYP functional. Pronounced hypsochromic shift of crystal-state fluorescence was observed in I upon the lowering of temperature, which can be explained by the deterioration of the conditions for excimers formation. According to our results, remarkable feature of II, absent in I, is its phosphorescence at room temperature. Basing on our calculations, a decay mechanism for the S1 state was proposed, explaining the observed differences in the phosphorescence of I and II.

Abstract
Electronic structure and optical properties of boron difluoride dibenzoylmethanate and four of its derivatives have been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, absorption and luminescence spectroscopy and quantum chemistry (DFT, TDDFT). The relative quantum luminescence yields have been revealed to correlate with charge transfers of HOMO-LUMO transitions, energy barriers of aromatic substituents rotation and the lifetime of excited states in the investigated complexes. The bathochromic shift of intensive bands in the optical spectra has been observed to occur when the functional groups are introduced into p-positions of phenyl cycles due to destabilizing HOMO levels. Calculated energy intervals between electronic levels correlate well with XPS spectra structure of valence and core electrons.

Abstract
A β-diketone dye was packed into the two-dimensional nanospace of a synthetic smectite (Sumecton SA), which is a cation-exchangeable layered silicate, to induce strong emission owing to molecular packing of the dye. An emissive dye, 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-(4-pyridyl)-1,3-propandione, was prepared through a Claisen condensation reaction; the dye exhibited aggregation-induced emission, which is enhanced emission owing to clustering of molecules to form aggregates in poor solvents or in the solid state. The dye was nonemissive in solution. However, strong green emission was observed because of the restriction of molecular motion when the protonated dye was accommodated into the interlayer nanospace of the silicate layers through cation-exchange reactions. The restricted motion was confirmed by the smaller nonradiative relaxation rate constant obtained by time-resolved luminescence and quantum yield measurements. A moderate dye packing (0.11 mmol/g) in the interlayer space is important to obtain enhanced emission, whereas the intercalation of a large amount of dye (0.27 mmol/g) resulted in concentration quenching. Therefore, the interlayer space of the layered silicate used here was responsible for the strong emission because of moderate packing of the accommodated β-diketones.

Abstract
The optical properties of meta-alkoxy-substituted difluoroboron dibenzoylmethane dyes were investigated in solution and in the solid state. Meta-alkoxy substitution induced strong intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from the oxygen-donating substituent to the halide and boron acceptors in the excited state, as compared to the π-π* transition that is observed with para-alkoxy substitution. The optical properties of para- and meta-substituted alkoxy boron dyes were evaluated by calculations, in dilute solution, and in solid-state films. When embedded in amorphous matrixes (e.g., PLA, PMMA, PS, cholesterol), all dyes showed fluorescence (F) and phosphorescence (P) emission. In this report, we show that meta-substitution resulted in enhanced solvatochromism and an increased phosphorescence-to-fluorescence ratio in solid-state films compared to analogous para-substituted samples. With enhanced phosphorescence intensity via the heavy-atom effect, iodo-substituted dyes were further studied in PLA-PEG nanoparticles. Oxygen calibrations revealed stronger phosphorescence and a greater oxygen-sensing range for the meta- versus para-alkoxy-substituted dyes, features that are important for oxygen-sensing materials design.

Abstract
Difluoroboron β-diketonate poly(lactic acid) materials exhibit both fluorescence (F) and oxygen sensitive room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). Introduction of halide heavy atoms (Br and I) is an effective strategy to control the oxygen sensitivity in these materials. A series of naphthyl-phenyl (nbm) dye derivatives with hydrogen, bromide and iodide substituents were prepared for comparison. As nanoparticles, the hydrogen derivative was hypersensitive to oxygen (0-0.3%), while the bromide analogue was suited for hypoxia detection (0-3% O2). The iodo derivative, BF2nbm(I)PLA, showed excellent F to RTP peak separation and an 0-100% oxygen sensitivity range unprecedented for metal-free RTP emitting materials. Due to the dual emission and unconventionally long RTP lifetimes of these O2 sensing materials, a portable, cost-effective camera was used to quantify oxygen levels via lifetime and red/green/blue (RGB) ratiometry. The hypersensitive H dye was well matched to lifetime detection, simultaneous lifetime and ratiometric imaging was possible for the bromide analogue, whereas the iodide material, with intense RTP emission and a shorter lifetime, was suited for RGB ratiometry. To demonstrate the prospects of this camera/material design combination for bioimaging, iodide boron dye-PLA nanoparticles were applied to a murine wound model to detect oxygen levels. Surprisingly, wound oxygen imaging was achieved without covering (i.e. without isolating from ambient conditions, air). Additionally, would healing was monitored via wound size reduction and associated oxygen recovery, from hypoxic to normoxic. These single-component materials provide a simple tunable platform for biological oxygen sensing that can be deployed to spatially resolve oxygen in a variety of environments.

Abstract
Mechanochromic luminescence has been observed in many boron coordinated β-diketonate (BF2bdk) complexes. Recently, it was shown that the metal-free methoxy-substituted dinaphthoylmethane β-diketone (dnmOMe) also displayed aggregation induced emission (AIE), solvatochromism, and high contrast mechanochromic luminescence (ML) that recovered rapidly at room temperature. In order to understand how substituents and boron coordination affect solution and solid-state optical properties, a series of methoxy- and bromo-substituted derivatives (dnm, dnmOMe, dnmBr, and dnmBrOMe) and their corresponding boron complexes (BF2dnm, BF2dnmOMe, BF2dnmBr, and BF2dnmBrOMe) were synthesized and their AIE, ML, and room temperature recovery properties were compared. All boron complexes exhibited red-shifted absorption and emission, in addition to larger solution and solid-state quantum yields than β-diketones. While AIE studies show increased emission for dnmOMe and dnmBrOMe, the emission of corresponding boron complexes diminished upon aggregation. However, boron complexes were still strongly emissive in the solid state. ML properties were investigated using spin-cast films. Smearing resulted in the appearance of blue-green emission in ligands and a color change from green to yellow-orange in boron complexes. Bromide substituted derivatives showed increased room temperature recovery times compared to other dnm ligands, and boron complexes show only partial recovery over several days.

Abstract
Single-component materials with both fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are useful for ratiometric sensing and imaging applications. On the basis of a general design principle, an amino-substituted benzophenone is covalently incorporated into waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) and results in fluorescence and RTP single-component dual-emissive materials (SDMs). At different aminobenzophenone concentrations, the statistical, thermal, and optical properties of these SDMs are characterized. Despite their similar thermal behaviors, the luminescence properties as a function of the chromophore concentration are quite different: increasing concentrations led to progressively narrowed singlet-triplet energy gaps. The tunability of fluorescence and RTP via chromophore concentration is explained by a previously proposed model, polymerization-enhanced intersystem crossing (PEX). The proposal of PEX is based on Kasha's molecular exciton theory with a specific application in polymeric systems, where the polymerization of luminophores results in excitonic coupling and enhanced forward and reverse intersystem crossing. The mechanism of PEX is also examined by theoretical calculations for the WPU system. It is found that the presence of K1 aggregates indeed enhances the crossover from singlet excited states to triplet ones.

Abstract
Dual emissive luminescence properties of solid-state difluoroboron β-diketonate-poly(lactic acid) (BF2bdk-PLA) materials have been utilized as biological oxygen sensors. Dyes with red-shifted absorption and emission are important for multiplexing and in vivo imaging, thus hydroxyl-functionalized dinaphthoylmethane initiators and dye-PLA conjugates BF2dnm(X)PLA (X = H, Br, I) with extended conjugation were synthesized. The luminescent materials show red-shifted absorbance (~435 nm) and fluorescence tunability by molecular weight. Fluorescence colors range from yellow (~530 nm) in 10 - 12 kDa polymers to green (~490 nm) in 20 - 30 kDa polymers. Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) are present under a nitrogen atmosphere. For the iodine-substituted derivative, BF2dnm(I)PLA, clearly distinguishable fluorescence (green) and phosphorescence (orange) peaks are present, making it ideal for ratiometric oxygen-sensing and imaging. Bromide and hydrogen analogues with weaker relative phosphorescence intensities and longer phosphorescence lifetimes can be used as highly sensitive, concentration independent, lifetime-based oxygen sensors or for gated emission detection. BF2dnm(I)PLA nanoparticles were taken up by T41 mouse mammary cells and successfully demonstrated differences in vitro ratiometric measurement of oxygen.

Abstract
The fluorescent spectra in combination with gas response behavior of acrylic polymers doped with dibenzoyl(methanato)boron difluoride (DBMBF2) were studied by fluorescence spectroscopy and time-resolved fluorescence lifetime. The role of acrylic matrix polarity upon the fluorescence spectra and fluorescence lifetime was analyzed. Changes in emission of the dye doped polymers under exposure to toluene, n-hexane and ethanol were monitored. The fluorescence lifetimes were measured for the singlet excited state as well as the exciplex formed between DBMBF2 and toluene. A reduction of the transition energy to the first singlet-excited state in the four polymers was observed, compared to solution. Reversible exciplex formation, viz. a red shifted fluorescence emission was perceived when exposing the polymers to toluene, while for hexane and ethanol only reversible reduction of the fluorescence occurred. Longer singlet and shorter exciplex lifetimes were observed for non-polar matrixes. The latter mechanism is explained in function of the lower charge transfer character of the exciplex in non-polar matrixes. Additionally, the quantum yield of the dye in the polymer matrix increased almost seventh-fold compared to values for solution.

Abstract

Luminescent materials are important
for imaging and sensing. Aromatic
difluoroboron β-diketonate complexes (BF2bdks) are
classic fluorescent molecules that have been explored as photochemical
reagents, two-photon dyes, and oxygen sensors. A series of BF2bdks with naphthyl and phenyl groups was synthesized, and
photophysical properties were investigated in both methylene chloride
and poly(lactic acid) (PLA). Polymer molecular weight and dye attachment
site along with bromide heavy atom placement were varied to tune optical
properties of dye–PLA materials. Systems without heavy atoms
have long phosphorescence lifetimes, which is useful for lifetime-based
oxygen sensing. Bromine substitution on the naphthyl ring resulted
in intense, clearly distinguishable fluorescence and phosphorescence
peaks important for ratiometric oxygen sensing and imaging.

Abstract
Materials with both fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) can be useful in the field of optoelectronics. Here we present a general strategy, taking advantage of carbonyl compounds, which have been known to possess efficient intersystem crossing with high triplet state yield, as well as a strongly fluorescent intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) state, to produce materials with both fluorescence and RTP at the same time, or dual-emission. In the presented model systems, in order to generate a suitable ICT state, Lewis acid binding to aromatic ketone derivatives has been proved to be a viable method. We have selected AlCl3, BCl3, BF3, and GdCl3 as binding Lewis acids, in that they exhibit sufficiently strong binding affinity toward the aromatic ketone derivatives to afford stable complexes and yet do not possess low-lying electronic transitions vs the ligands. We have successfully observed dual-emission from these designed complexes in polymers, which act to suppress competitive thermal decay at room temperature. One of the complexes is particularly interesting as it is dual-emissive in the crystalline state. Single-crystal XRD reveals that the molecule forms multiple hydrogen bonds with its neighbors in crystals, which may significantly enhance the rigidity of the environment.

Abstract
Recently, organic fluorescent molecules harnessing the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process are drawing great attention due to their unique photophysical properties which facilitate novel optoelectronic applications. After a brief introduction to the ESIPT process and related photo-physical properties, molecular design strategies towards tailored emission are discussed in relation to their theoretical aspects. Subsequently, recent studies on advanced ESIPT molecules and their optoelectronic applications are surveyed, particularly focusing on chemical sensors, fluorescence imaging, proton transfer lasers, and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).
