Synthesis of Well-Defined (AB)n Multiblock Copolymers Composed of Polystyrene and Poly(methyl methacrylate) Segments Using Specially Designed Living AB Diblock Copolymer Anion

Easy Access to Diverse Multiblock Copolymers with On-Demand Blocks via Thioester-Relayed In-Chain Cascade Copolymerization

Multiblock copolymers are envisioned as promising materials with enhanced properties and functionality compared with their diblock/triblock counterparts. However, the current approaches can construct multiblock copolymers with a limited number of blocks but tedious procedures. Here, we report a thioester-relayed in-chain cascade copolymerization strategy for the easy preparation of multiblock copolymers with on-demand blocks, in which thioester groups with on-demand numbers are built in the polymer backbone by controlled/living polymerizations. These thioester groups further serve as the in-chain initiating centers to trigger the acyl group transfer ring-opening polymerization of episulfides independently and concurrently to extend the polymer backbone into multiblock structures. The compositions, number of blocks, and block degree of polymerization can be easily regulated. This strategy can offer easy access to a library of multiblock copolymers with ≈100 blocks in only 2 to 4 steps.

One-Pot Synthesis of Alternating (Ultra-High Molecular Weight) Multiblock Copolymers via a Combination of Anionic Polymerization and Polycondensation

This article presents a fast, straightforward synthesis approach to polymerize alternating multiblock copolymers, ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) (homo)polymers as well as precursors for complex macromolecular topologies such as comb or barbwire architectures. The one-pot synthesis strategy proposed in this work is based on anionic polymerization via a bifunctional initiator and the subsequent linking of macro dianions with a bifunctional linker, additionally overcoming the limitations associated with the monomer reactivity. Thus, the synthetic route guarantees the repeating size of polymer blocks and an equal distribution of functional groups in precursors for complex topologies. Dianions of polystyrene (PS), polyisoprene-b-polystyrene-b-polyisoprene, and poly-2-vinylpyridine-b-polystyrene-b-poly-2-vinylpyridine are linked with α , α ' -dibromo-para-xylene to UHMW and multiblock copolymers. Multiblock copolymers with on average up to 50 well-defined alternating A and B blocks are accessible within 15 min.

Library of Derivatizable Multiblock Copolymers by Nucleophilic Substitution Polymerization and Targeting Specific Properties

Multiblock copolymers (MBCs) are fascinating in the field of biology-polymer chemistry interfaces. Synthesizing libraries of MBCs with tailor-made functionality is challenging as it involves multiple steps. Herein, a simple synthesis, analogous to polyurethane/Michael addition reactions, has been introduced to obtain a library of derivatizable MBCs. Nucleophilic substitution polymerization (S_NP) of poly(ε-caprolactone) and poly(ethylene glycol) blocks containing activated halide termini by primary mono/di/coamines or clickable amines provides functional MBCs. The structure of amines directs the properties of the MBCs. The self-assembly of small molecular weight primary diamine-based MBCs shows controlled release of hydrophobic model guest molecules and therapeutics. The primary diamine (no dangling chain) helps to form MBC micelles having a relatively tight core with a low diffusion property. Antimicrobial property in the MBCs has been introduced by separating the cationic centers from the lipophilic groups using a coamine as a nucleophilic agent and a small molecular weight dihalide as a chain extender. Clickable MBCs were synthesized by changing the structure of the nucleophile to obtain degradable amphiphilic conetworks and hydrogels. Varieties of macromolecular entities could be obtained by switching the nucleophilic agent and introducing a small molecular weight chain extender. This synthesis approach provides an opportunity to tune the chemical functionality, topological structure, and biological properties of macromolecular entities.

Effect of copolymer sequence on structure and relaxation times near a nanoparticle surface

We simulate a simple nanocomposite consisting of a single spherical nanoparticle surrounded by coarse-grained polymer chains. The polymers are composed of two different monomer types that differ only in their interaction strengths with the nanoparticle. We examine the effect of adjusting copolymer sequence on the structure as well as the end-to-end vector autocorrelation, bond vector autocorrelation, and self-intermediate scattering function relaxation times as a function of distance from the nanoparticle surface. We show how the range and magnitude of the interphase of slowed dynamics surrounding the nanoparticle depend strongly on sequence blockiness. We find that, depending on block length, blocky copolymers can have faster or slower dynamics than a random copolymer. Certain blocky copolymer sequences lead to relaxation times near the nanoparticle surface that are slower than those of either homopolymer system. Thus, tuning copolymer sequence could allow for significant control over the nanocomposite behavior.

Engineering single-polymer micelle shape using nonuniform spontaneous surface curvature

Conventional micelles, composed of simple amphiphiles, exhibit only a few standard morphologies, each characterized by its mean surface curvature set by the amphiphiles. Here we demonstrate a rational design scheme to construct micelles of more general shape from polymeric amphiphiles. We replace the many amphiphiles of a conventional micelle by a single flexible, linear, block copolymer chain containing two incompatible species arranged in multiple alternating segments. With suitable segment lengths, the chain exhibits a condensed spherical configuration in solution, similar to conventional micelles. Our design scheme posits that further shapes are attained by altering the segment lengths. As a first study of the power of this scheme, we demonstrate the capacity to produce long-lived micelles of horseshoe form using conventional bead-spring simulations in two dimensions. Modest changes in the segment lengths produce smooth changes in the micelle's shape and stability.

Precise Synthesis of Macromolecular Architectures by Novel Iterative Methodology Combining Living Anionic Polymerization with Specially Designed Linking Chemistry

This article reviews the development of a novel all-around iterative methodology combining living anionic polymerization with specially designed linking chemistry for macromolecular architecture syntheses. The methodology is designed in such a way that the same reaction site is always regenerated after the polymer chain is introduced in each reaction sequence, and this "polymer chain introduction and regeneration of the same reaction site" sequence is repeatable. Accordingly, the polymer chain can be successively and, in principle, limitlessly introduced to construct macromolecular architectures. With this iterative methodology, a variety of synthetically difficult macromolecular architectures, i.e., multicomponent μ-star polymers, high generation dendrimer-like hyperbranched polymers, exactly defined graft polymers, and multiblock polymers having more than three blocks, were successfully synthesized.

Study on the Mechanism of a Side Coupling Reaction during the Living Anionic Copolymerization of Styrene and 1-(Ethoxydimethylsilyphenyl)-1-phenylethylene (DPE-SiOEt)

A 1,1-diphenylethylene (DPE) derivative with an alkoxysilyl group (DPE-SiOEt) was synthesized. It was end-capped with poly(styryl)lithium (PSLi) and then copolymerized with styrene via living anionic polymerization (LAP) in a non-polar solvent at room temperature. The observed side coupling reaction was carefully investigated by end-capping the polymer. Changes in molecular weight support the plausibility of a mechanism involving living anionic species (PSLi or lithiated DPE-end-capped polystyrene, PSDLi) and the alkoxysilyl groups. Through a series of copolymerizations with different feed ratios, the kinetics of the side coupling reaction were also studied. The results showed that the side reactions could be controlled using an excess feed of DPE-SiOEt, a potentially useful strategy for the synthesis and application of well-defined alkoxysilyl-functionalized polymers via LAP.

Synthesis, characterization, micellization and application of novel multiblock copolymers with the same compositions but different linkages

Several novel multiblock copolymers, (PEO-b-PS-b-PEO-Diyne)_s, [PEO-b-PS-b-PEO-(OH)₄]_s and (PEO-b-PS-b-PEO-Acetal)_s, with the same compositions but different linkages were constructed, and their micellization and application were studied.

Synthesis of thermally cleavable multisegmented polystyrene by an atom transfer nitroxide radical polymerization (ATNRP) mechanism

Based on the common features of well-defined NRC reaction, ATRP and NMRP mechanisms, an atom transfer nitroxide radical polymerization (ATNRP) mechanism was presented, and further used to construct multisegmented PS_m embedded with multiple alkoxyamine linkages.

Aperiodic Copolymers

Current polymer terminology only describes very simple copolymer structures such as block, graft, alternating periodic, or statistical copolymers. This restricted vocabulary implies that copolymers exhibit either segregated (i.e., block and graft), regular (i.e., alternating and periodic), or uncontrolled (i.e., statistical or random) comonomer sequence distributions. This standard classification does not include many new types of sequence-controlled copolymers that have been reported in recent years. In this context, the present viewpoint describes a new category of copolymers: aperiodic copolymers. Such structures can be defined as copolymers in which monomer sequence distribution is not regular but follows the same arrangement in all chains. The term aperiodic can be used to describe encoded comonomer sequences in monodisperse sequence-defined copolymers but also the block sequence of some multiblock copolymers. These new types of copolymers open up very interesting perspectives for the design of complex materials. Some recent relevant literature on the topic is discussed herein.

Analysis of the static properties of cluster formations in symmetric linear multiblock copolymers

We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the static properties of a single linear multiblock copolymer chain under poor solvent conditions varying the block length N, the number of blocks n, and the solvent quality by variation of the temperature T. We study the most symmetrical case, where the number of blocks of monomers of type A, n(A), equals that of monomers B, n(B) (n(A) = n(B) = n/2), the length of all blocks is the same irrespective of their type, and the potential parameters are also chosen symmetrically, as for a standard Lennard-Jones fluid. Under poor solvent conditions the chains collapse and blocks with monomers of the same type form clusters, which are phase separated from the clusters with monomers of the other type. We study the dependence of the size of the clusters formed on n, N and T. Furthermore, we discuss our results with respect to recent simulation data on the phase behaviour of such macromolecules, providing a complete picture for the cluster formations in single multiblock copolymer chains under poor solvent conditions.
