Abstract
Zinc(II) (5), indium(III) (6), and lutetium(III) (7) phthalocyanines (Pcs) peripherally substituted with poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) monomethyl ether 2000 (PEGME-2000) blocks were synthesized via Sonogashira coupling reaction with high yields and their photophysical, photochemical and photobiological properties were investigated. We elucidated the interactions of these compounds with calf thymus DNA and bovine serum albumin (BSA), and determined K(DNA) and K(BSA) binding constants at degrees of 105 and 106, respectively. Singlet oxygen quantum yields were found (Ф∆ = 0.44, 0.54, and 0.68 for 5, 6, and 7, respectively). Thermodynamic parameters, as well as thermal denaturation profile of double-stranded CT-DNA were examined to determine the type of binding mode. According to our experimental data, we report that PEGME-2000 favors the formation of binary complex between DNA, and phthalocyanine complexes. Therein, thermodynamic data suggest that this binding mode is indeed spontaneous under reported conditions, and rather non-specific. Additionally, Pcs 5, 6, and 7 substituted with PEGME-2000 blocks showed antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi (yeast), and Pc 5 had the highest antimicrobial activity among them, as revealed by disc diffusion assay results. In short, our results suggest that these compounds could be used for photodynamic therapy, they have both antibacterial and antifungal activity, and the binding ability of new phthalocyanines 5, 6, and 7 with BSA paves the way for their utilization as drug vehicle in blood plasma.

Abstract
A series of triazine-linked mono-, bis- and tris-phthalocyanines are synthesized, intramolecular aggregation is found in bis- and tris-phthalocyanines via π-π stacking interaction. Theoretical and experimental studies reveal the formation of the intramolecular aggregation. The spectrographic, photophysical and nonlinear optical properties of these compounds are adjusted for the formation of the intramolecular aggregation. The bis-phthalocyanine dimer presents smaller fluorescence quantum yield, lower triplet formation yield and the triplet-minus-ground state extinction coefficient, which causes poorer optical limiting performance. It is interesting that the tris-phthalocyanine is composed of a mono-phthalocyanine part and a bis-phthalocyanine part, the optical limiting property of the tris-phthalocyanine is similar to that of mono-phthalocyanine.

Abstract
Ring-expanded metallophthalocyanines fused with thiophene rings 1–4 have been synthesized by ring closing reaction from the o-chloroethynylbenzene substructures with Na 2 S 9 H 2 O . The self-organizing properties of these compounds have been studied by UV-vis spectroscopy in solution, π-A isotherms at air-water interface, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of a solid, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Whereas all compounds exhibit good solubility in organic solvents, thiophene-fused phthalocyanines form stable aggregates through strong intermolecular π–π interaction. Copper phthalocynaine Cu -2 possessing phenyl spacers produced long nano-fibrous assemblies from solution.

Abstract
The columnar mesomorphism of triphenylene-, phthalocyanine-, tetraazaporphyrin- and porphyrin-based compounds is briefly reviewed and the potential use of this particular supramolecular structure for charge-conducting devices is discussed. Suitably substituted triphenylenes exhibit ideal material properties for photoconducting devices, and well-aligned layers have been shown to give a very high charge carrier mobility of 0.1 × 10-4 m 2 V -1 s -1 (time-of-flight measurements). From a molecular point of view, porphyrin systems should be superior to triphenylenes, but the properties of their mesophases do not support the advantageous homeotropic alignment of the columnar stacks. However, pulse radiolysis time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements revealed the highest charge carrier mobility value of 0.28 × 10-4 m 2 V -1 s -1 for mesomorphic phthalocyanines.

Abstract
Non-ionic amphiphilic zinc(II) phthalocyanine 4 with eight oxyethylene side chains exhibits excellent solubility in water and organic solvents such as benzene, chloroform, methanol, THF and DMF. The monomer–aggregate equilibrium of 4 was affected by the solvent polarity. Photoreduction of methylviologen (MV2+) in the presence of triethanolamine was also studied with the use of non-ionic complex 4 under light irradiation. The yield for the radical formation of MV2+ was greatly increased by the addition of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) in aqueous solution.

Abstract
We present a joint molecular dynamics (MD)/kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) study aimed at the atomistic description of charge transport in stacks of liquid-crystalline tetraalkoxy-substituted, metal-free phthalocyanines. The molecular dynamics simulations reproduce the major structural features of the mesophases, in particular, a phase transition around 340 K between the rectangular and hexagonal phases. Charge transport simulations based on a Monte Carlo algorithm show an increase by 2 orders of magnitude in the hole mobility when accounting for the rotational and translational dynamics. The results point to the formation of dynamical structural defects along the columns.

Abstract
Low-symmetry, adjacent-type metallophthalocyanines 1 and 2 with four branched alkyl chains on one side and a chiral bridging segment on the other were synthesized, and their self-organization properties were investigated. The synthesized adjacent-type phthalocyanines were liquid-crystalline and exhibited a phase transition from the crystalline phase to the mesophase below room temperature. X-ray diffraction indicated that the molecules are stacked in one-dimensional columnar aggregates with a hexagonal arrangement. The self-organization behavior of zinc complex 1 and cobalt complex 2 was also investigated with a monolayer experiment at the air-water interface. The adjacent-type phthalocyanines formed a stable monolayer at the air-water interface, and the monolayers could be transferred onto quartz substrates by a Y-type deposition. UV-vis, XRD, and CD measurements for the resulting Langmuir-Blodgett films indicated that 1 and 2 had different molecular orientations.

Abstract
The synthesis, structural characterisation and properties of a number of phthalocyanine-containing dendrimers are described. Peripheral substitution of phthalocyanine (Pc) with four poly(aryl ether) dendritic wedges (1st, 2nd or 3rd generation) produces materials whose properties are dominated both by the columnar self-association of the Pc core and by the glass-forming character of the dendritic substituents. Asymmetric Pcs containing a single poly(aryl ether) dendron display a columnar mesophase, the structure of which can be frozen into an anisotropic glass at room temperature. Placing the dendritic wedges at the axial sites of silicon phthalocyanine prohibits self-association and gives materials from which can be fabricated robust, isotropic solid solutions of Pc with high glass transition temperatures. A single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of one of these compounds illustrates the ability of the axial dendrons to prevent cofacial aggregation in the solid state.
