Diffusion Coefficients of Xenon in Polystyrene Determined by Xenon-129 NMR Spectroscopy

Continuous Nanospace in Nanoporous Liquid Crystal Investigated by 129 Xe NMR Spectroscopy

Continuous nanopores within fluid materials could be used for novel chemical events such as the accommodation of guest molecules, unique arrays of the entrapped molecules, and chemical reactions in a dynamic molecular assembly. Columnar liquid crystals composed of a one-dimensionally stacked assembly of shape-persistent macrocycles form nanochannels owing to the intrinsic nanospace in the column. However, the existence of substantial nanoporosity has not been confirmed experimentally thus far. In this study, for the first time in the literature, we confirmed the presence of discrete and spatiotemporally continuous voids in a liquid-crystalline material. In 129 Xe NMR spectroscopy of liquid crystalline columnar assembly of imine-bridged shape-persistent macrocycles under Xe atmosphere, the NMR signals of the Xe atoms entrapped in the liquid-crystalline macrocycle depended on the gas pressure and phase-transition temperatures. These results indicate that the encapsulation of Xe gas molecules within the discrete and oriented nanospaces of nanoporous liquid crystals is different from the homogeneous dissolution of the solute in an ordinary solution.

Size-dependent nanoscale soldering of polystyrene colloidal crystals by supercritical fluids

HYPOTHESIS

Polymer particles self-assembled into colloidal crystals have exciting applications in photonics, phononics, templates for nanolithography, and coatings. Cold soldering utilizing polymer plasticization by supercritical fluids enables a novel, low-cost, low-effort, chemical-free means for uniform mechanical strengthening of fragile polymer colloidal crystals at moderate temperatures. Here, we aim to elucidate the role of particle size and gas-specific response for the most efficient soldering, exploring the full potential of this method.

EXPERIMENTS

We investigate the elastic properties of polystyrene colloidal crystals made of nanoparticles with different diameters (143 to 830 nm) upon treatment with supercritical Ar and He at room temperature. By employing Brillouin light scattering, we quantify the effect of nanoparticle size on the strengthening of interparticle contacts, evaluating the permanent change in the effective elastic modulus upon cold soldering.

FINDINGS

The relative change in the effective elastic modulus reveals nonmonotonic dependence on the particle size with the most efficient soldering for mid-sized nanoparticles (about 610 nm diameter). We attribute this behavior to the crucial role of intrinsic fabrication impurities, which reduces the nanoparticles' free surface exposed to plasticization by supercritical fluids. Supercritical Ar, a good solvent for polystyrene, enabled effective soldering of nanoparticles, whereas high-pressure He treatment is entirely reversible.

Mechanical reinforcement of polymer colloidal crystals by supercritical fluids

Colloidal crystals realized by self-assembled polymer nanoparticles have prominent attraction as a platform for various applications from assembling photonic and phononic crystals, acoustic metamaterials to coating applications. However, the fragility of these systems limits their application horizon. In this work the uniform mechanical reinforcement and tunability of 3D polystyrene colloidal crystals by means of cold soldering are reported. This structural strengthening is achieved by high pressure gas (N₂ or Ar) plasticization at temperatures well below the glass transition. Brillouin light scattering is employed to monitor in-situ the mechanical vibrations of the crystal and thereby determine preferential pressure, temperature and time ranges for soldering, i.e. formation of physical bonding among the nanoparticles while maintaining the shape and translational order. This low-cost method is potentially useful for fabrication and tuning of durable devices including applications in photonics, phononics, acoustic metamaterials, optomechanics, surface coatings and nanolithography.

Unraveling Triplet Excitons Photophysics in Hyper-Cross-Linked Polymeric Nanoparticles: Toward the Next Generation of Solid-State Upconverting Materials

The technological application of sensitized upconversion based on triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) requires the transition from systems operating in liquid solutions to solid-state materials. Here, we demonstrate that the high upconversion efficiency reported in hyper-cross-linked nanoparticles does not originate from residual mobility of the embedded dyes as it happens in soft hosts. The hyper-reticulation from one side blocks the dyes in fixed positions, but on the other one, it suppresses the nonradiative spontaneous decay of the triplet excitons, reducing intramolecular relaxations. TTA is thus enabled by an unprecedented extension of the triplet lifetime, which grants long excitons diffusion lengths by hopping among the dye framework and gives rise to high upconversion yield without any molecular displacement. This finding paves the way for the design of a new class of upconverting materials, which in principle can operate at excitation intensities even lower than those requested in liquid or in rubber hosts.

Two-compartment radial diffusive exchange analysis of the NMR lineshape of Xe129 dissolved in a perfluorooctyl bromide emulsion

Hyperpolarized (129)Xe (xenon) gas dissolved in a perfluorooctyl bromide (PFOB) emulsion stabilized with egg yolk phospholipid (EYP) is a possible contrast agent for quantitative blood flow measurements using magnetic resonance imaging. The NMR line shape of xenon dissolved in PFOB emulsion depends strongly on the exchange of spins between PFOB and water. The exchange in this system depends on three factors: the geometrical factors (i.e., droplet size and surrounding water volume), the permeability of the EYP monolayer surrounding the droplet, and the diffusion coefficients of xenon in the two media. A theoretical model which predicts the line shape of xenon in the emulsion based on the Bloch-Torrey equations is presented. Fitting the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the theoretical line shapes with the FWHM of the experimental spectra obtained from emulsions with different water dilutions allows estimation of the volume-weighted average diameter of the PFOB droplets (3.5+/-0.8) microm and the permeability of the EYP membrane surrounding the droplet (58+/-14) microm / s.

Typical diffusion behaviour in packaging polymers – application to functional barriers

When plastics are collected for recycling, possibly contaminated articles might be recycled into food packaging, and thus the contaminants might subsequently migrate into the food. Multilayer functional barriers may be used to delay and to reduce such migration. The contribution of the work reported here is to establish reference values (at 40 degrees C) of diffusion coefficients and of activation energies to predict the functional barrier efficiency of a broad range of polymers (polyolefins, polystyrene, polyamide, PVC, PET, PVDC, [ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer], polyacrylonitrile and [ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer]). Diffusion coefficients (D) and activation energies (Ea) were measured and were compiled together with literature data. This allowed identification of new trends for the log D=f(molecular weight) relationships. The slopes were a function of the barrier efficiency of the polymer and temperature. The apparent activation energy of diffusion displayed two domains of variation with molecular weight (M). For low M (gases), there was little variation of Ea. Focusing on larger molecules, high barrier polymers displayed a larger dependence of Ea with M. The apparent activation energy decreased with T. These results suggest a discontinuity between rubbery and glassy polymers.

A lattice model for the simulation of one and two dimensional 129Xe exchange spectra produced by translational diffusion

Xenon-129 spectra in some heterogeneous polymer systems consist of two resonances which collapse to a single resonance as a function of temperature. Two different resonances arise from spatially separated, distinct sorption environments and spectral collapse occurs when xenon atoms diffuse from one environment to the other at a sufficiently fast rate. This exchange mechanism involves a distribution of time constants and a two domain lattice model is used to generate a realistic distribution of correlation times resulting from diffusion in a heterogeneous matrix. The distribution of correlation times is inhomogeneous in the sense that different xenon atoms would exchange between the two domains or environments with a variety of time constants and the resulting spectrum is a superposition of spectra associated with each of the time constants. To demonstrate the nature of exchange according to this model, diffusion out of a sphere is simulated which corresponds to a progressive saturation experiment used to determine the diffusion constant of xenon in polystyrene. Then the model is used to demonstrate the difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous spectral collapse in one- and two-dimensional examples. Lastly, the simulation model is used to interpret one- and two- dimensional xenon-129 line shape changes for xenon sorbed into poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) as a function of temperature. Two broad resonances are observed at low temperatures in this polymer corresponding to xenon-129 sorbed in high free volume and low free volume domains. Exchange between the two main resonances collapses the spectrum to a single peak at higher temperatures. Both the collapse in one dimension and exchange in two dimensions as a function of mixing time can be simulated using the distribution from the lattice model. An average domain size of 70 nm is estimated by combining the simulation of the exchange experiment with the results of a one-dimensional progressive saturation experiment. The size of the sites sorbing individual xenon atoms has been reported from positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy as 1.4 nm for the high free volume sites and 0.3 nm for the low free volume sites. The domain size is more than an order of magnitude larger than the individual sorption site indicating that domains consist of many sites as assumed in the lattice model description.
