Abstract
Well-defined statistical copolymers of n-hexyl isocyanate, HIC, and 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate, TESPI, were synthesized via coordination polymerization mechanism, employing a chiral half-titanocene complex as initiator. The monomer reactivity ratios of the statistical copolymers were calculated using linear graphical methods and the computer program COPOINT in the frame of the terminal model. The molecular and structural characteristics of the copolymers were also calculated. The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of the statistical copolymers was studied by Thermogravimetric Analysis, TGA, and Differential Thermogravimetry, DTG, and the activation energy of this process was calculated employing several theoretical models. In addition, block copolymers constituted from PHIC and PTESPI blocks were synthesized by sequential coordination polymerization. All samples were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, NMR, spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography, SEC. The thermal stability of the blocks was also studied by TGA and DTG and compared to the corresponding statistical copolymers.

Abstract
The solution phase alkali metal reduction of [8]annulenyl isocyanate (C8H7NCO) yields an EPR spectrum, which reveals electron couplings to seven protons and only one nitrogen. Although this strongly suggested that the C8H7NCO anion radical was generated, experiments on the oxidized product reveal the actual reduced species to be tris-[8]annulenyl isocyanurate. Unlike the previously studied phenyl isocyanurate anion radical, the unpaired electron(s) is now localized within an [8]annulenyl moiety. Further exposure to metal results in the formation of an equilibrium mixture of trianion triradical and trianion radical species. The cyclotrimerization to form the isocyanurate is proposed to be driven by a reactive C8H7NCO dianion, which is produced from the large equilibrium disproportionation of the anion radical. Exhaustive reduction of the tris-[8]annulenyl isocyanurate with potassium in THF generates the first-ever observed hexa-anion of an isocyanurate. NMR analysis reveals that the polarity of the carbonyl bonds within this hexa-anion is augmented and is caused by the close proximity of K(+) ions, which are tightly ion paired to the three [8]annulenyl dianion rings. These preliminary studies on the reduction of C8H7NCO suggest that polymeric materials (e.g., polyisocyanates) made from this isocyanate might exhibit unique properties.

Abstract
Using a chemical cross-linking procedure, surface-grafted polyglutamate films with a permanently perpendicular helix orientation were prepared. A surface-grafted alpha-helical polyglutamate film containing polymerizable side groups was synthesized by ring-opening terpolymerization of 50 molar% gamma-methyl-L-glutamate N-carboxyanhydride (NCA), 30% gamma-stearyl-L-glutamate NCA and 20% gamma-4-vinylbenzyl-L-glutamate NCA initiated from a silicon substrate functionalized with primary amino groups. The average tilt angle of the end-grafted helices in this film is approximately 66 degrees , indicating a nearly parallel helix orientation with respect to the substrate surface. After swelling of the grafted terpolyglutamate film in stearyl methacrylate and subsequent radical cross-linking, the average helix tilt angle decreases to about 11 degrees, indicating an almost perpendicular helix orientation. The film thickness increases accordingly from 151 A before to approximately 390 A after cross-linking. Extensive solvent treatment of the cross-linked film shows that the perpendicular helix orientation is permanent.
