Positron Lifetime Distributions and Free Volume Parameters of PEO/PMMA Blends Determined with the Maximum Entropy Method

Decoding Polymer Architecture Effect on Ion Clustering, Chain Dynamics, and Ionic Conductivity in Polymer Electrolytes

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based polymer electrolytes are a promising class of materials for use in lithium-ion batteries due to their high ionic conductivity and flexibility. In this study, the effects of polymer architecture including linear, star, and hyperbranched and salt (lithiumbis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI)) concentration on the glass transition (T _g), microstructure, phase diagram, free volume, and bulk viscosity, all of which play a significant role in determining the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte, have been systematically studied for PEO-based polymer electrolytes. The branching of PEO widens the liquid phase toward lower salt concentrations, suggesting decreased crystallization and improved ion coordination. At high salt loadings, ion clustering is common for all electrolytes, yet the cluster size and distribution appear to be strongly architecture-dependent. Also, the ionic conductivity is maximized at a salt concentration of [Li/EO ≈ 0.085] for all architectures, and the highly branched polymers displayed as much as three times higher ionic conductivity (with respect to the linear analogue) for the same total molar mass. The architecture-dependent ionic conductivity is attributed to the enhanced free volume measured by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Interestingly, despite the strong architecture dependence of ionic conductivity, the salt addition in the highly branched architectures results in accelerated yet similar monomeric friction coefficients for these polymers, offering significant potential toward decoupling of conductivity from segmental dynamics of polymer electrolytes, leading to outstanding battery performance.

Investigation of Various Organic Radicals Dispersed in Polymethylmethacrylate Matrices Using the Electron Spin Resonance Spectroscopy Technique

The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy technique was used to study various organic radicals, such as 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxyl (TEMPO), 4-hydroxy-TEMPO (TEMPOL), 2-X-nitronylnitroxide (2-X-NN, X = Ph, NO₂Ph, or cyclohexyl), 4-Y-benzonitronylnitroxide (4-Y-PhBzNN, Y = Ph or NO₂Ph), and 2-Z-iminonitroxide (2-Z-IN, Z = Ph or NO₂Ph) dispersed in a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) matrix. The experiments were conducted at room temperature. The complex nature of the recorded ESR spectra could be attributed to the superposition of the rotational diffusion component of TEMPO (or TEMPOL) in the nanospace of the PMMA matrix with the rigid-limit component. A single component of the rigid-limit was observed for 2-X-NN and 4-Y-PhBzNN radicals dispersed in the PMMA matrix. The isotropic components of g and hyperfine ( A ) tensor, estimated by analyzing the solution spectra, were used to determine the g and A components of 4-Y-PhBzNN. Only the rotational diffusion component was observed for the 2-Z-IN radical. These results demonstrated that the PMMA matrix contains cylindrical nanospaces. Various radicals other than TEMPO derivatives could be used in the ESR spin probe technique as probe molecules for determining the structures, sizes, and shapes of the nanospaces.

Free Volume Element Sizes and Dynamics in Polystyrene and Poly(methyl methacrylate) Measured with Ultrafast Infrared Spectroscopy

The size, size distribution, dynamics, and electrostatic properties of free volume elements (FVEs) in polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were investigated using the Restricted Orientation Anisotropy Method (ROAM), an ultrafast infrared spectroscopic technique. The restricted orientational dynamics of a vibrational probe embedded in the polymer matrix provides detailed information on FVE sizes and their probability distribution. The probe's orientational dynamics vary as a function of its frequency within the inhomogeneously broadened vibrational absorption spectrum. By characterizing the degree of orientational restriction at different probe frequencies, FVE radii and their probability distribution were determined. PS has larger FVEs and a broader FVE size distribution than PMMA. The average FVE radii in PS and PMMA are 3.4 and 3.0 Å, respectively. The FVE radius probability distribution shows that the PS distribution is non-Gaussian, with a tail to larger radii, whereas in PMMA, the distribution is closer to Gaussian. FVE structural dynamics, previously unavailable through other techniques, occur on a ∼150 ps time scale in both polymers. The dynamics involve FVE shape fluctuations which, on average, conserve the FVE size. FVE radii were associated with corresponding electric field strengths through the first-order vibrational Stark effect of the CN stretch of the vibrational probe, phenyl selenocyanate (PhSeCN). PMMA displayed unique measured FVE radii for each electric field strength. By contrast, PS showed that, while larger radii correspond to unique and relatively weak electric fields, the smallest measured radii map onto a broad distribution of strong electric fields.

Amorphous polymer dynamics and free volume element size distributions from ultrafast IR spectroscopy

A method for measuring the size and size probability distribution of free volume regions in polymeric materials using ultrafast infrared (IR) polarization-selective pump-probe experiments is presented. Measurements of the ultrafast dynamics of a vibrational probe (the CN stretch of phenyl selenocyanate) in poly(methyl methacrylate) show that the probe dynamics are highly confined. The degree of confinement was found to be both time-dependent and dependent on the vibrational frequency of the probe molecule. The experiments demonstrate that different vibrational frequencies correspond to distinct subensembles of probe molecules that have different dynamic properties determined by their local structural environments. By combining the degree of dynamical confinement with the molecular size of the probe molecule, the free volume element size probability distribution was determined and found to be in good agreement with the best established experimental measure of free volume. The relative probability of a free volume element size is determined by the amplitude of the nitrile absorption spectrum at the frequency of the measurement. The inhomogeneous broadening of the spectrum was linked to the vibrational Stark effect, which permits site selectivity. The observed dynamics at each frequency were then associated with a different size free volume element and distinct local electric field. The multiple timescales observed in the pump-probe experiments were connected to local structural fluctuations of the free volume elements.

Dynamics of a poly(ethylene oxide) tracer in a poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix: Remarkable decoupling of local and global motions

The tracer diffusion coefficient of unentangled poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO, M=1000 gmol) in a matrix of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA, M=10 000 gmol) has been measured over a temperature range from 125 to 220 degrees C with forced Rayleigh scattering. The dynamic viscosities of blends of two different high molecular weight PEO tracers (M=440 000 and 900 000 gmol) in the same PMMA matrix were also measured at temperatures ranging from 160 to 220 degrees C; failure of time-temperature superposition was observed for these systems. The monomeric friction factors for the PEO tracers were extracted from the diffusion coefficients and the rheological relaxation times using the Rouse model. The friction factors determined by diffusion and rheology were in good agreement, even though the molecular weights of the tracers differed by about three orders of magnitude. The PEO monomeric friction factors were compared with literature data for PEO segmental relaxation times measured directly with NMR. The monomeric friction factors of the PEO tracer in the PMMA matrix were found to be from two to six orders of magnitude greater than anticipated based on direct measurements of segmental dynamics. Additionally, the PEO tracer terminal dynamics are a much stronger function of temperature than the corresponding PEO segmental dynamics. These results indicate that the fastest PEO Rouse mode, inferred from diffusion and rheology, is completely separated from the bond reorientation of PEO detected by NMR. This result is unlike other blend systems in which global and local motions have been compared.

Characterization of free volume during vulcanization of styrene butadiene rubber by means of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and dynamic mechanical test

An experimental investigation was performed to study the effect on the free volume of the advance of the cross-linking reaction in a copolymer of styrene butadiene rubber by sulfur vulcanization. The dynamic modulus and loss tangent were evaluated over samples cured for different times at 433 K by dynamic mechanical tests over a range of frequencies between 5 and 80 Hz at temperatures between 200 and 300 K. Using the William-Landel-Ferry relationship, master curves were obtained at a reference temperature of 298 K and the coefficients c(0)(1) and c(0)(2) were evaluated. From these parameters the dependence of the free volume on the cure time is obtained. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was also used to estimate the size and number density of free volume sites in the material. The spectra were analyzed in terms of continuous distributions of free volume size. The results suggest an increase of the lower free volume size when cross linking takes place. Both techniques give similar results for the dependence of free volume on the time of cure of the polymer.
