Double Stimuli-Responsive di- and Triblock Copolymers of Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and Poly(1-vinylimidazole): Synthesis and Self-Assembly. Int J Mol Sci 2023; 24:ijms24010879. Abstract
For the first time, double stimuli-responsive properties of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) and poly(1-vinylimidazole) (PVIM) block copolymers in aqueous solutions were studied. The synthesis of PNIPA60-b-PVIM90 and PNIPA28-b-PVIM62-b-PNIPA29 was performed using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The polymers were characterized by size exclusion chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The conformational behavior of the polymers was studied using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and fluorescence spectroscopy (FS). It was found that PNIPA and block copolymers conformation and ability for self-assembly in aqueous medium below and above cloud point temperature depend on the locus of hydrophobic groups derived from the RAFT agent within the chain. Additionally, the length of PVIM block, its locus in the chain and charge perform an important role in the stabilization of macromolecular micelles and aggregates below and above cloud point temperature. At 25 °C the average hydrodynamic radius (Rh) of the block copolymer particles at pH 3 is lower than at pH 9 implying the self-assembling of macromolecules in the latter case. Cloud points of PNIPA60-b-PVIM90 are ~43 °C and ~37 °C at a pH of 3 and 9 and of PNIPA28-b-PVIM62-b-PNIPA29 they are ~35 °C and 31 °C at a pH of 3 and 9. Around cloud point independently of pH, the Rh value for triblock copolymer rises sharply, achieves the maximum value, then falls and reaches the constant value, while for diblock copolymer, it steadily grows after reaching cloud point. The information about polarity of microenvironment around polymer obtained by FS accords with DLS data.

Flow behavior of thermo-thickening associative polymers in porous media: effects of associative content, salinity, time, velocity, and temperature. SN APPLIED SCIENCES 2022. Abstract
Abstract
Above a critical temperature, thermo-thickening associative polymers (TAPs) have a superior ability to decrease the mobility of the water phase, compared to traditional polymers for enhanced oil recovery. The ability to decrease the mobility, will be amplified at low flow velocities, and by the presence of salt, and is much higher in porous media than would be expected from bulk viscosity. In this work, we have examined TAPs ability to reduce the mobility, i.e., to increase the resistance factor. We have studied the effect of increasing the associative content, changing the porous media, changing the salinity, and scaling up the size of the porous media. How the resistance factor evolved, was studied as a function of temperature, velocity, and time. We found that a critical associative content or critical concentration of polymer was needed to achieve thermo-thickening in the porous media. As expected, thermo-thickening increased by increasing the salinity. For the relative homogenous clastic porose media investigated here, ranging from ~ 1Darcy sandstone to multidarcy sand, type of porous media did not seem to have a significant impact on the resistance factor. Time and amount of polymer injected is a critical factor: The buildup of thermo-thickening is delayed compared to the polymer front. For our tests with the weaker systems, we also observed a breakdown of the associative network at very low injection rates, possibly caused by the formation of intramolecular association.
Article highlights
Key findings from our tests of thermo-thickening associative polymer for enhance oil recovery operations:
At high temperature, the polymer solutions mobility in porous media is much lower than expected from viscosity
At low temperature, the flow behavior is like that of a traditional synthetic polymer
This will mean good injectivity and superior sweep, compared to a traditional polymer for enhanced oil recovery

Abstract
Materials enabling impact-energy absorption of high-velocity projectiles are of great interest for applications like aerospace. In such a frame, shear thickening fluids were found very useful. Here, we investigated nanorheological properties of neat and aqueous polyelectrolytes of low molecular weights containing poly([2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] trimethyl ammonium) as polycations and poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) as polyanions. Results were compared with pure water. We employed nonequilibrium molecular dynamics with the SLLOD algorithm to compute the viscosity at various shear rates. Systems containing polyelectrolytes exhibit shear thickening. The analysis of molecular configurations revealed a strong disruption of the ionic structure and more clusters with smaller sizes on increasing the shear rate. Potential energies showed that shear thickening originates from an increase in intramolecular and van der Waals interactions resulting from the increasing difficultly of polyelectrolyte-based systems to relax at high shear rates. Our method and findings underscore the importance of accounting for the molecular scale in the design of materials absorbing the impact energy efficiently.

Abstract
Poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide) (p(NiPMAm)) is one of the lesser known homopolymers that has significant potential for designing new "intelligent" materials. The aims of this work were the synthesis a series of cross-linked p(NiPMAm) hydrogels by the free radical polymerization method and the application of gamma-ray radiation for additional cross-linking. The synthesized p(NiPMAm) hydrogels were structurally characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The amount of unreacted monomers was analyzed using high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) to evaluate conversion of monomers into polymers. The swelling behavior was monitored in dependence of pH and temperature changes. The previous aim of gamma-ray radiation was the further the cross-linkage of the obtained hydrogel sample in the gelatinous, paste-like state, but the gamma-ray radiation caused decomposition. After absorbing irradiation doses, they transformed into the liquid phase. The results obtained by the gel permeation chromatography (GPC) method indicated that only oligomers and monomers were present in the irradiated liquid material, without molecules with a higher average molar mass, i.e., that the decomposition of the hydrogels occurred. Additionally, the irradiated liquid material was analyzed using the static headspace gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HSS-GC/MS) and gas chromatography/flame ionization detection (HSS-GC/FID) methods. The presence of unchanged initiator molecule and a dominant amount of four new molecules that were different from homopolymers and the reactant (monomer and cross-linker) were determined.

Abstract
Non-Newtonian fluids are ubiquitous in daily life and industrial applications. Herein, we report an intelligent fluidic system integrating two distinct non-Newtonian rheological properties mediated by an autocatalytic enzyme reaction. Associative polyelectrolytes bearing a small amount of ionic and alkyl groups are engineered: by carefully balancing the charge density and the hydrophobic effect, the polymer solutions demonstrate a unique shear thickening property at low pH while shear thinning at high pH. The urea-urease clock reaction is utilized to program a feedback-induced pH change, leading to a strong upturn of the nonlinear viscoelastic properties. As long as the chemical fuel is supplied, two distinct non-Newtonian states can be achieved with a tunable lifetime span. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate how the physical energy-driven nonequilibrium properties can be manipulated by a chemical-fueled process.

Abstract
Supramolecular polymer networks have been designed on the basis of a π-electron donor/acceptor complex: naphthalene (N)/cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT4+ = B). For this purpose, a copolymer of N,N-dimethylacrylamide P(DMA-N1), lightly decorated with 1 mol% of naphthalene pendant groups, has been studied in semi-dilute un-entangled solution in the presence of di-CBPQT4+ (BB) crosslinker type molecules. While calorimetric experiments demonstrate the quantitative binding between N and B groups up to 60 °C, the introduction of BB crosslinkers into the polymer solution gives rise to gel formation above the overlap concentration. From a comprehensive investigation of viscoelastic properties, performed at different concentrations, host/guest stoichiometric ratios and temperatures, the supramolecular hydrogels are shown to follow a Maxwellian behavior with a strong correlation of the plateau modulus and the relaxation time with the effective amount of interchain cross-linkers and their dissociation dynamics, respectively. The calculation of the dissociation rate constant of the supramolecular complex, by extrapolation of the relaxation time of the network back to the beginning of the gel regime, is discussed in the framework of theoretical and experimental works on associating polymers.

Abstract
Semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs), comprised of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (p(NIPAAm-co-AAc)) hydrogels and linear p(AAc) chains, were synthesized, and the effects of the p(AAc) chains on semi-IPN rheology were examined. Oscillatory shear rheometry studies were performed and the rheological data were analyzed as a function of temperature, frequency, and p(AAc) chain amount (weight average molecular weight (Mw) 4.5 x 10(5) g/mol). At 22 degrees C, the semi-IPNs, as well as control p(NIPAAm-co-AAc) hydrogels, demonstrated rheological data that were representative of soft, loosely cross-linked solids. Furthermore, only the highest p(AAc) chain amount tested affected the rigidity of the p(NIPAAm-co-AAc)-based semi-IPNs, as compared to the p(NIPAAm-co-AAc) hydrogels. At 37 degrees C, the complex shear moduli (G*) demonstrated by the p(NIPAAm-co-AAc)-based semi-IPNs were significantly greater than G* exhibited by the p(NIPAAm-co-AAc) hydrogels, and the semi-IPN G* values significantly increased with increasing p(AAc) chain amount. These results can be used to develop p(NIPAAm)-based semi-IPNs with tailored mechanical properties that may function as scaffolds in tissue engineering initiatives.

Abstract
The association of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB, with a series of P(MMAx-co-SSNa) random copolymers of sodium styrene sulfonate (SSNa) with methyl methacrylate (MMA) was explored in aqueous solution as a function of the MMA molar content, x, of the copolymers. The polyelectrolyte/surfactant complexation in aqueous solution was verified through pyrene fluorescence probing. In addition, turbidimetry studies in dilute or more concentrated aqueous solutions elucidated the phase separation behavior of the P(MMAx-co-SSNa)/CTAB systems as a function of the copolymer composition x and the surfactant to polyelectrolyte mixing charge ratio. It is found that practically phase separation is completely suppressed within the studied mixing range when the MMA content of the copolymers is ∼30-40 mol%. For lower MMA contents the polyelectrolyte/surfactant complex separates out from water, while for higher x values the solubility limits of the copolymers in water are attained. For the intermediate MMA contents, viscoelastic systems are obtained in more concentrated polymer/surfactant solutions provided that the polyelectrolyte is fully complexed with the cationic surfactant ((1)H NMR results). Moreover, the (1)H NMR studies indicate that hybrid P(MMAx-co-SSNa)/CTAB wormlike micelles are formed in water under these conditions. Finally, it is shown that addition of salt prevents syneresis problems and facilitates the rheological investigation.

Abstract
We describe here the synthesis of a novel magnetic drug-targeting carrier characterized by a core-shell structure. The core-shell carrier combines the advantages of a magnetic core and the stimuli-responsive property of the thermosensitive biodegradable polymer shell (e.g., an on-off mechanism responsive to external temperature change). The composite nanoparticles are approximately 8 nm in diameter with approximately 3 nm shell. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) is approximately 38 degrees C as determined by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The carrier is composed of cross-linked dextran grafted with a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N,N-dimethylacrylamide) [dextran-g-poly(NIPAAm-co-DMAAm)] shell and superparamagnetic Fe3O4 core. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the composition of the carrier. The synthesized magnetic carrier system has potential applications in magnetic drug-targeting delivery and magnetic resonance imaging.

Abstract
The interaction of a hydrophobically modified anionic polymer (PMAOVE) with a cationic surfactant (DTAB) was studied using a multi-technique approach: turbidity, surface tension, and viscosity measurements, as well as EPR (5-doxyl stearic acid) and fluorescence (pyrene) probe techniques were used. In the investigated pH range (4-10), the cationic surfactant headgroups interact with the anionic carboxylic groups of the polymer backbone. In addition, nonpolar interactions of the surfactant chains with the n-octyl chains of PMAOVE stabilize the PMAOVE-DTAB complexes. Charge neutralization of the anionic polymer by the cationic surfactant leads to precipitation of the PMAOVE-DTAB complex at a certain DTAB concentration range. Further addition of DTAB causes a charge reversal of the complex and, subsequently, resolubilization of the precipitate. At an acidic pH (pH = 4), a second precipitation was observed, which is probably caused by conformational changes in the PMAOVE-DTAB complex. This second precipitate can be resolubilized by further addition of surfactant. At a neutral and basic pH, this second precipitation is absent. EPR analysis indicates that the surfactants form an ordered structure at the extended polymer chain at a neutral and basic pH, whereas at an acidic pH, a less ordered surfactant layer is formed on the coiled polymer with more hydrophobic microdomains.

Abstract
Interactions of surfactants with hydrophobically modified polyelectrolytes in aqueous solutions are important in several applications such as detergents, cosmetics, foods, and paints. Fundamental questions arise on the mechanisms of complexation of the polyelectrolyte and surfactant that control their behavior. In this work, the complexation was studied by examining interactions in aqueous solutions of a hydrophobically modified polymer, poly(maleic acid/octyl vinyl ether) (PMAOVE), with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) by monitoring viscosity, pyrene solubility, light scattering, and analytical ultracentrifugation. When the anionic surfactant SDS was added to aqueous solutions of the similarly charged polymer PMAOVE, the surfactant was incorporated into the hydrophobic nanodomains of PMAOVE even far below the cmc of the surfactant. On the basis of viscosity, pyrene solubility, and analytical ultracentrifugation data, it is proposed that PMAOVE undergoes structural unfolding and at higher SDS concentrations mixed micelles are formed.

Abstract
Interactions of surfactants with hydrophobically modified polyelectrolytes in aqueous solutions are important in several applications such as detergency, cosmetics, food, and paints. Complexes formed in these systems raise some fundamental questions about the polymer-surfactant interactions that control their behavior. In this work, the interactions of a nonionic surfactant, penta-ethyleneglycol mono n-dodecyl ether (C(12)EO(5)), with a hydrophobically modified anionic polymer, poly(maleic acid/octyl vinyl ether) (PMAOVE), in aqueous solutions were studied using surface tension, viscosity, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, light scattering, and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques. When the nonionic surfactant C(12)EO(5) was added to aqueous solutions of the anionic polymer PMAOVE, it was incorporated into the hydrophobic nanodomains of PMAOVE far below the the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of the surfactant. Two inflection points were observed corresponding to the critical complexation concentration (formation of mixed micelles composed of C(12)EO(5) and the octyl chains of PMAOVE) and the saturation concentration (saturation of the polymer with C(12)EO(5) molecules). Above the saturation concentration, the coexistence of pure C(12)EO(5) micelles and mixed micelles of PMAOVE and C(12)EO(5) was observed. Such a coexistence of complexes has major implications in their performance in colloidal processes.

Abstract
A block copolymer of propylene oxide (PO) and ethoxyethyl glycidyl ether (EEGE), (PO)(2)(EEGE)(6)(PO)(2), that has been found to possess lower critical solution temperature properties in water in the temperature range below 20 degrees C was mixed at 1:0.1, 1:1, and 1:10 weight ratios with commercially available Pluronic (L64 or P85) block copolymers. The cooperative association of the copolymers in aqueous solution was studied by dynamic light scattering over a wide temperature range (5-60 degrees C). At lower temperatures, the systems containing either L64 or P85 behave similarly irrespective of the composition: three species corresponding to (PO)(2)(EEGE)(6)(PO)(2) unimers, Pluronic-dominated mixed micelles, and large (50-60 nm in radius) composite (PO)(2)(EEGE)(6)(PO)(2)/Pluronic aggregates were identified. At a certain temperature, which is composition-dependent, the systems phase-separate [(PO)(2)(EEGE)(6)(PO)(2)/L64 1:0.1], enter an interval of instability [(PO)(2)(EEGE)(6)(PO)(2)/L64 1:1 and 1:10], or rearrange by dissociation of the large composite particles [(PO)(2)(EEGE)(6)(PO)(2)/P85]. The presence of a Pluronic micellar peak in the relaxation time distribution at lower temperatures, the dimensions of the composite particles, and the different behavior of the systems at elevated temperatures are discussed. A possible application of the thermosensitive mixtures in delivery/release of active substances is suggested.
