Atom Transfer Radical Addition/Polymerization of Perfluorosulfonic Acid Polymer with the C-F Bonds as Reactive Sites

Perfluorosulfonic acid polymer based eATRP for ultrasensitive detection of CYFRA21-1 DNA

The sensitive detection of biomarker cytokeratin fragment antigen 21-1 (CYFRA21-1) is crucial for early diagnosis and screening of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this work, an electrochemical biosensor based on Nafion-initiated eATRP has been built for ultrasensitive detection of CYFRA21-1 DNA for the first time. Specifically, peptide nucleic acid (PNA) probes are immobilized onto a gold electrode surface and then hybridized with target DNA to form PNA/DNA heteroduplexes for the subsequent attachment of Nafion by the identified carboxyl-Zr4+-phosphoric acid chemistry. Finally, polymer chains are obtained by linking the monomer of ferrocenylmethyl methacrylate to the PNA/MCH/DNA/Zr4+/Nafion probes via eATRP. Under optimized steady-state conditions, the sensor offers a wide current response for CYFRA21-1 DNA from 10-11 to 10-16 M with a detection limit of 6.42 × 10-17 M. The proposed method of using Nafion as the eATRP initiator exhibits high sensitivity, reproducibility and stability and is a promising strategy for early diagnosis of NSCLC.

F-containing initiatior for ultrasensitive fluorescent detection of lung cancer DNA via atom transfer radical polymerization

An ultrasensitive fluorescence method for early diagnosis of lung cancer via Nafion-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is reported, in this paper. In the proposed method, thiolated peptide nucleic acid (PNA) is modified to amino magnetic beads (MBs) via a cross-linking agent to specifically capture target DNA (tDNA), and the initiator (Nafion) of ATRP is attached to PNA/DNA heteroduplexes based on the phosphate groups of the tDNA and sulfonate groups of Nafion via phosphate-Zr⁴⁺-sulfonate chemistry. Nafion as a macroinitiator of ATRP possesses multiple C-F active sites to initiate polymerization, and numerous polymeric chains that significantly amplify the fluorescent signal are formed. Under optimal conditions, a good linear relationship is obtained in the range of 0.1 nM-0.1 fM with correlation coefficients of 0.9975, and the detection limit is as low as 35.5 aM (∼214 molecules). The proposed strategy has several advantages of simplicity, cost-effectiveness, selectivity and sensitivity. More importantly, the anti-interference results demonstrate that the proposed Nafion-initiated ATRP strategy has great potential in bioanalytical applications.

Copper(0) Mediated Single Electron Transfer Controlled Radical Polymerization toward CF Bonds on Poly(vinylidene fluoride)

The first copper(0) mediated controlled radical polymerization (CRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) toward CF bonds onto poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is reported with rather high activity. By avoiding the halogen exchange, Cu⁰ instead of Cu^I complexes utilized as catalyst is responsible for the significantly improved polymerization activity. Using FH decoupled nuclear magnetic resonance technique, the grafting sites onto PVDF are finely located. From this, detailed topologic information including the grafting density, average length of each side chain, along with the overall grafted content of PMMA, is detected by tracking the polymerization as a function of time. This work offers not only a facile CRP strategy based on inactive CF bonds but also a deep insight into the cleavage of F-bearing compounds in organic chemistry.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) Modification via Organocatalyzed Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

To address the challenge of metal contamination, a "graft from" approach via organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (O-ATRP) is developed to synthesize poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-co-CTFE)) graft copolymers. N-phenylphenothiazine is utilized as a model organic photoredox catalyst for catalyzing the (co)polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), methacrylate (MA), and n-butyl acrylate (BA). By employing this technique, high temporal control of polymerization and graft content are achieved. A series of P(VDF-co-CTFE)-g-PMMA, P(VDF-co-CTFE)-g-PMA, and P(VDF-co-CTFE)-g-PBA is prepared under mild conditions. The resultant graft copolymer can be used as macroinitiator to re-initiate O-ATRP to synthesize P(VDF-co-CTFE)-g-(PMMA-b-PMA), which might exhibit the potential application as novel dielectric material.

Photoredox-Mediated ATRP: A Facile Method for Modification of Graphite Fluoride and Graphene Fluoride without Deoxygenation

Graphite fluoride (GiF) and graphene fluoride (GeF) showed interesting electrochemical, electronic, and mechanical properties in comparison with their derivatives of graphite and graphene, respectively. Due to the chemical inertness of GiF and GeF, as far as we are aware, no report can be found on the modification of GiF and GeF with polymeric chains. Herein, we reported that photoredox-mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is able to directly introduce methacrylate-based polymers, including poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (POEGMA), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(pentafluorophenyl methacrylate) (PPFMA), and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA), onto the surface of GiF and GeF by utilizing C-F bonds of GiF and GeF as initiating sites and Ir(ppy)₃ as a photoredox catalyst under low intensity blue LED light strips (10 W, 460-470 nm) in DMF for graft polymerization without a tedious deoxygenation procedure. Owing to the attractive properties of GiF and GeF, along with the capacity of spatial control over the formation of polymeric chains on the surface of GiF and GeF endowed by the inherent nature of photoredox-mediated ATRP, there is no doubt that the strategy developed in the current work shows a great potential in the preparation of polymer-decorated GiF and GeF and the corresponding functional materials.

Nafion-Initiated ATRP of 1-Vinylimidazole for Preparation of Proton Exchange Membranes

Nafion is one of the most widely investigated materials applied in proton exchange membranes. Interestingly, it was found that Nafion could serve as a macroinitiator to induce atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) on its C-F sites. In this study, poly(1-vinylimidazole) was selectively bonded on the side chains of Nafion via the Nafion-initiated ATRP process, which was confirmed by the measurements of (1)H/(19)F nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimeter and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight/time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The as-prepared Nafion-co-poly(1-vinylimidazole) (Nafion-PVIm) membranes, with tunable loading amount of imidazole rings, presented greatly enhanced proton conductivity and methanol resistivity due to their well-controlled chemical structures. Especially, chemically bonding PVIm with Nafion chains endowed the Nafion-PVIm membranes with high stability in proton conductivity. For the first time, we revealed the great potentials of the Nafion-initiated ATRP process in developing high-performance proton exchange membranes.

Synthesis and self-assembly of a fluorine-containing amphiphilic graft copolymer bearing a perfluorocyclobutyl aryl ether-based backbone and poly(acrylic acid) side chains

Fluorine-containing amphiphilic graft copolymers made of a semi-fluorinated PMBTFVB backbone and hydrophilic PAA side chains were synthesized by the combination of thermal cycloaddition polymerization and ATRP.
