Gate effect of vacancy-type defect of fullerene cages on metal-atom migrations in metallofullerenes

Platinum clusters on vacancy-type defects of nanometer-sized graphene patches

Density functional theory calculations found that spin density distributions of platinum clusters adsorbed on nanometer-size defective graphene patches with zigzag edges deviate strongly from those in the corresponding bare clusters, due to strong Pt-C interactions. In contrast, platinum clusters on the pristine patch have spin density distributions similar to the bare cases. The different spin density distributions come from whether underlying carbon atoms have radical characters or not. In the pristine patch, center carbon atoms do not have spin densities, and they cannot influence radical characters of the absorbed cluster. In contrast, radical characters appear on the defective sites, and thus spin density distributions of the adsorbed clusters are modulated by the Pt-C interactions. Consequently, characters of platinum clusters adsorbed on the sp² surface can be changed by introducing vacancy-type defects.

Chemically reactive species remain alive inside carbon nanotubes: a density functional theory study

The behavior of alkyl guest radicals inside carbon nanotube hosts with different diameters is analyzed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Here the inner alkyl radicals are assumed to be formed by decomposition of their precursors, which had been incorporated into the tubes. DFT calculations show that inner alkyl radicals prefer to exist separately from the nanotube wall (separate form) rather than forming an inner covalent bond with the wall (bound form). Keeping a radical apart from the inner wall is more likely for a more bulky radical inside a smaller diameter tube. A key to the preference for the separate forms over the bound forms is that the bound forms gain a weak attraction due to the formation of a bond with the inner wall. The weak attraction, ascribed to the inertness of the inner surface, is counteracted by destabilization due to deformations of a tube and radical induced by guest-host coupling. The energy balance argument illuminates that the inertness of the inner wall makes an alkyl radical species remain alive inside a tube and retain its reactivity. These findings can help us to understand experimental results where chemical reactions inside a tube proceed after guests are activated.

Radical coupling reaction of paramagnetic endohedral metallofullerene La@C82

The thermal reaction of La@C(82)(C(2v)) with 3-triphenylmethyl-5-oxazolidinone (1) in toluene affords benzyl monoadducts La@C(82)(C(2v))(CH(2)C(6)H(5)) (2a-2d). The same monoadducts are also obtained by the photoirradiation of La@C(82)(C(2v)) in toluene without the existence of 1. These reactions are applicable to paramagnetic metallofullerenes, such as La@C(82)(C(s)) and Ce@C(82)(C(2v)). The photoirradiation of La@C(82)(C(2v)) in 1,2-dichlorobenzene in the presence of alpha,alpha,2,4-tetrachlorotoluene also affords the monoadducts La@C(82)(C(2v))(CHClC(6)H(3)Cl(2)) (3a-3d). The monoadducts are fully characterized by spectroscopic analyses. Single-crystal X-ray structure analysis for 3d reveals the unique structure. Theoretical calculations show that the cage carbons having high spin densities are selectively attacked by radical species to form the monoadducts linked by a carbon-carbon single bond. The thermal reaction of La@C(82)(C(2v)) with 1 in benzene affords metallofulleropyrrolidine La@C(82)(C(2v))(C(2)H(4)NCPh(3)) (5), unlike the reaction in toluene.

Local Modifications of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes Induced by Bond Formation with Encapsulated Fullerenes

Defected fullerenes in nanopeapods form bonds with the encapsulating single-walled carbon nanotubes when irradiated by an electron beam leading to changes in the guest (fullerene) and the host (nanotube). Intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) analysis based on B3LYP hybrid density functional theory shows that a C1-C59 defect with a single protruding C atom is initially formed from the C60(Ih) cage. The high activation energy for this step (8.37 eV (193.0 kcal/mol)), being assumed to be accessible during irradiation, is lower than that of the Stone-Wales rearrangement on the sp2 network. The binding of the defected fullerene to the nanotube is preferential, orthogonal bonds relative to the tube axis being slightly preferred. Because of the covalent bonds formed between the guest and host, the carbon network on the nanotube is locally perturbed in the vicinity of the binding site. As a result of the new bonds, bisnorcaradiene-like as well as quinonoid-like patterns appear near the binding site. These results are interpreted using orbital interaction and Clar diagram arguments. The changes in the bonding pattern on the nanotube should be significant in further functionalization of carbon nanotubes.
