Abstract
The use of Smiles rearrangement in Ugi- and Passerini-type couplings with electron-deficient phenols allows very straightforward multicomponent formation of O-aryl- and N-arylamides. Best yields were observed with the highly activated o- and p-nitrophenols, salicylic derivatives giving adducts in lower yields. The scope of these new reactions is further increased by the successful couplings of heterocyclic phenols such as hydroxypyridines and hydroxypyrimidines.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] Tandem Pictet-Spengler-type cyclization and Smiles rearrangement have been discovered in the synthesis of pyrimidine-fused heterocycles. The reaction of 4-chloro-5-pyrrol-1-ylpyrimidine amino aldehyde with an amine under an acidic condition yielded the Pictet-Spengler-type cyclization product diazepine, which readily underwent Smiles rearrangement to give a novel pyrrolo[1,2-f]pteridine derivative.

Abstract
A rapid and simple procedure for enantioselective preparation of 2- and 3-substituted 2,3-dihydro[1,4]dioxino[2,3-b]pyridine derivatives (A and B, respectively) is described. The enantiomeric purity of each isomer was determined by capillary electrophoresis using a dual-cyclodextrin system (S-beta-CD/beta-CD) dissolved in formic acid-ammonia buffer (pH 4, ionic strength 50 mM).

Abstract
TFA/Et(3)SiH-mediated cyclization of thioketones 5 derived from the reaction of functionalized thiophenols (catechols) with bromo ketones gave syn 2,3-bisaryl(or heteroaryl) dihydrobenzoxathiins and benzodioxane 1 with total diastereoselectivity (>99:1), in excellent yields.
