Twisting and bending photo-excited phenylethynylbenzenes - a theoretical analysis

Oligo(phenylethynyl)benzenes are a family of compounds that exhibit a rich photochemistry changing dramatically with different orientation of a phenyl group in the molecule. Quantum-chemical calculations have been performed to investigate different members of this family of compounds and compared to previous experimental and theoretical studies. 1,4-Bis(phenylethynyl)benzene (BPEB) has different optical properties than its smaller relative diphenylacetylene; however, upon twisting an outer phenyl ring of BPEB, its photochemistry becomes very similar. Fluorine substituents at the central benzene ring are shown to have only small effects on the optical properties of BPEB.

Systematic Modifications of a Simple Tolan: Another Category of Viscosity Sensor

The first tolan derivative-based viscosity sensor (5d) has been synthesized, and its fluorescence intensity and lifetime increase when the viscosity of the solvent increases in methanol-glycerol mixtures. Phthalide (5d) was selected among structurally diverse tolan derivatives through systematic modifications of a simple tolan. To test 5d as a viscosity sensor, fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) images of HeLa cells were obtained upon treatment with 5 μM of 5d to map the viscosity of the HeLa cells.

Reversible mechanofluorochromism of aniline-terminated phenylene ethynylenes

Seven three-ring phenylene-ethynylene (PE) structural analogs, differing only in the lengths of alkyl chains on terminal aniline substituents, show 50-62 nm bathochromic shifts in emission maxima in response to mechanical force (mechanofluorochromism, MC). These shifts are fully reversible with heat or solvent fuming. Shearing of these solids yields a transition from green-emitting crystalline phases to orange-emitting amorphous phases as established by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. Molecules with shorter alkyl chain lengths required higher temperatures to recover the hypsochromically shifted crystalline phases after grinding, while the recovery with chain lengths longer than butyl occurred at room temperature. In addition to this structure-dependent thermochromism, these compounds retain their MC properties in polymer hosts to various extents. The crystalline phases of these materials have PE chromophores that are twisted due to non-covalent perfluoroarene-arene (ArF-ArH) interactions involving perfluorophenyl pendants and the terminal rings of the PE chromophore, resulting in interrupted conjugation and an absence of chromophore aggregation. The MC behavior of an analog without the perfluoroarene rings is severely attenuated. This work demonstrates the general utility of twisted PEs as stimuli-responsive moieties and reveals clear structure-property relationships regarding the effects of alkyl chain length on these materials.

Substituent Effects That Control Conjugated Oligomer Conformation through Non-covalent Interactions

Although understanding the conformations and arrangements of conjugated materials as solids is key to their prospective applications, predictive power over these structural factors remains elusive. In this work, substituent effects tune non-covalent interactions between side-chain fluorinated benzyl esters and main-chain terminal arenes, in turn controlling the conformations and interchromophore aggregation of three-ring phenylene-ethynylenes (PEs). Cofacial fluoroarene-arene (ArF-ArH) interactions cause twisting in the PE backbone, interrupting intramolecular conjugation as well as blocking chromophore aggregation, both of which prevent the typically observed bathochromic shift observed upon transitioning PEs from solution to solid. This work highlights two structural factors that determine whether the ArF-ArH interactions, and the resulting twisted, unaggregated chromophores, occur in these solids: (i) the electron-releasing characteristic of substituents on ArH, with more electron-releasing character favoring ArF-ArH interactions, and (ii) the fluorination pattern of the ArF ring, with 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl favoring ArF-ArH interactions over 2,4,6-trifluorophenyl. These trends indicate that considerations of electrostatic complementarity, whether through a polar-π or substituent-substituent mechanism, can serve as an effective design principle in controlling the interaction strengths, and therefore the optoelectronic properties, of these molecules as solids.

Comprehensive Look at the Photochemistry of Tolane

Diphenylacetylene (tolane) exhibits a rich photochemistry that depends on the relative orientation of the phenyl rings and the external conditions. Here, state-of-the-art quantum chemical methods based on the algebraic diagrammatic construction scheme for a polarization propagator of second order are employed to investigate the luminescence properties of tolane and its derivatives. It is explained why different derivatives of tolane exhibit different absorption but practically identical fluorescence spectra, why the fluorescence quantum yield and the population of a "dark" state are temperature-dependent, and why initially twisted tolanophanes phosphoresce in glassy media at 77 K while planar ones do not.

Conformationally Locked Tolans, β-Sheet Structures, and Photophysical Properties

Conformationally locked tetrasubstituted tolans were synthesized by introducing a tether on the tolan. To demonstrate the utilities of these motifs, a β-hairpin structure (15) was synthesized, and its additional stabilizing effects were evaluated. Moreover, the photophysical properties of cyclic tolans and their β-sheet structure were investigated. The fluorescence quantum yield of cyclic tolan 12 is >1000 times stronger than its congener 1 in CH3CN.

Bridged tolanes: a twisted tale

The rotational motion of tolanes along their acetylene axis is not fully understood. What happens to the optical and electronic properties if the tolane backbone is forced into a twisted conformation? Several tethers were investigated to obtain tolanophanes, fixing the torsion angle of the two phenyl rings. X-ray crystal structures revealed tether-specific torsion angles in the solid state. The absorption, emission, and excitation spectra were recorded. Twisted tethered tolane conformers showed blue-shifted absorption; emission spectra were all torsionally independent and identical. The tethered tolanes were embedded in a rigid matrix by freezing to 77 K; well-resolved emission spectra were recorded for planar tolanes, but for twisted systems unexpectedly long-lived phosphorescence was observed. How is this triplet emission explained? Quantum chemical calculations (TDDFT/cam-B3LYP/6-31G*) of the unsubstituted tolane showed that intersystem crossing (ISC) is favored with large spin-orbit coupling, which occurs when the molecular orbitals are orthogonal to each other; this is the case at the crossing of S1/T7. Also, a small energy difference between singlet and triplet states is required; we found that ISC can favorably take place at four crossings: S1/T6, S1/T7, S1/T(8,9), S1/T10.

Quadruple π stack of two perylene bisimide tweezers: a bimolecular complex with kinetic stability

Self-assembly: A tweezer-type perylene bisimide (PBI) dyad self-assembles into a defined bimolecular complex composed of a quadruple PBI π stack with remarkable kinetic stability, which is unprecedented for π-stacked dye aggregates (see picture). These persistent supramolecular species are of considerable interest for the elucidation of functional properties of dye aggregates.

Oligo(quinoxalineethynylene)s: synthesis, properties, and Ag+-mediated complanation

A series of oligo(quinoxalineethylene)s which exhibit n-type semi-conducting features were synthesized, and adding Ag(+) to their solutions induced the backbones to adopt coplanar conformations due to Ag(+)-N coordination.

Engineering Control over the Conformation of the Alkyne−Aryl Bond by the Introduction of Cationic Charge

A novel arylene-ethynylene molecule has been synthesized. This molecule is more stable in a coplanar form than in a twisted form as in the cases of typical arylene-ethynylene molecules. When the cationic charge was introduced into the pi-conjugated system, the perpendicularly twisted form became more stable than the coplanar state. The conformational change was controlled by introduction and removal of cationic charge, confirmed by the absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy and DFT calculation.

Engineering a twist in 9,10-diethynylanthracenes by steric interactions

A series of 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracenes decorated with sterically demanding tert-butyl substituents have been prepared and spectroscopically characterised. We demonstrate that the introduction of two bulky substituents in the ortho position of the phenyl rings effectively locks the ground state into a conformation in which the three rings are orthogonal. Fluorescence spectroscopy reveals evidence for partial planarisation of this compound in the excited state at ambient temperature, but this is prevented in low temperature solvent glasses.

Probing the Intrachain and Interchain Effects on the Fluorescence Behavior of Pentiptycene-Derived Oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene)s

The synthesis, crystal structure, and fluorescence behavior of acetylene-bridged pentiptycene dimer (2), trimer (3), and tetramer (4) are reported. For comparison, a phenylene-pentiptycene-phenylene three-ring system (5) is also investigated. As a result of the unique intrachain pentiptycene-pentiptycene interactions in 3 and 4, their twisted conformers are populated in polar solvents and at low temperatures, and the phenomenon of nonequilibration of excited rotational conformers is observed. Twisting of the pi-conjugated backbones leads to blue-shifted absorption and fluorescence spectra and increased fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes. The fluorescence spectra of 2-4 undergo small red shifts but large intensity variations in the 0-1 vs 0-0 bands on going from solutions to thin solid films, which can be accounted for by the reabsorption effect. However, the reduction in fluorescence quantum yields for 2-4 in films vs solutions is mainly attributed to efficient interchain exciton migration to nonfluorescent energy traps. In contrast, the behavior of nonequilibration of excited rotamers is not observed for 5 in solutions. Compound 5 forms J-type aggregates through terminal phenylene pi-stackings in the solid state, resulting in a new absorption band at 377 nm and large red shifts of the structured fluorescence spectra.

A Practical Synthesis of Bridged Diarylacetylenes

An efficient and practical synthesis of bridged diarylacetylenes in multigram quantities has been successfully carried out using high-yielding (classical) synthetic methods and readily available starting materials. The structural analysis of the representative bridged diarylacetylenes by X-ray crystallography strongly suggests that conformations, bending of the linear triple bond, and the angle between the mean planes of aromatic rings in various bridged diarylacetylenes are governed by the p-pi conjugation among the aromatic rings and the ethereal groups. Furthermore, the synthetic scheme also allows the preparation of (appropriately) bromo-substituted bridged diarylacetylenes which hold potential for their future usage for the preparation of polymeric analogues as well as the hexaarylbenzene derivatives for potential applications in the emerging area of molecular electronics and nanotechnology.

Light-Harvesting in Carbonyl-Terminated Phenylacetylene Dendrimers: The Role of Delocalized Excited States and the Scaling of Light-Harvesting Efficiency with Dendrimer Size

The photophysics of a family of conjugated phenylacetylene (PA) light-harvesting dendrimers are studied using steady-state and time-resolved optical spectroscopy. The dendrimers consist of a substituted PA core surrounded by meta-branched PA arms. The total number of PA moieties ranges from 3 (first generation) to 63 (fifth generation). By using an alcohol/ketone substituent at the dendrimer core, we avoid through-space Forster transfer from the peripheral PA donors to the core acceptor (in this case, the carbonyl group), which simplifies the analysis of these molecules relative to the perylene-terminated molecules studied previously. The delocalized excited states previously identified in smaller dendrons are seen in these larger dendrimers as well, and their influence on the intersite electronic energy transfer (EET) is analyzed in terms of a point-dipole Forster model. We find that these new delocalized states can both enhance EET (by decreasing the spatial separation between donor and acceptor) and degrade it (by lowering the emission cross section and shifting the energy, resulting in poorer spectral overlap between donor and acceptor). The combination of these two effects leads to a calculated intersite transfer time of 6 ps, in reasonable agreement with the 5-17 ps range obtained from experiment. In addition to characterizing the electronic states and intersite energy transfer times, we also examine how the overall light-harvesting efficiency scales with dendrimer size. After taking the size dependence of other nonradiative processes, such as excimer formation, into account, the overall dendrimer quenching rate k(Q) is found to decrease exponentially with dendrimer size over the first four generations. This exponential decrease is predicted by simple theoretical considerations and by kinetic models, but the dependence on generation is steeper than expected based on those models, probably due to increased disorder in the larger dendrimers. We discuss the implications of these results for dendrimeric light-harvesting structures based on PA and other chemical motifs.

A Polyaromatic Receptor with an Ethereal Fence that Directs K+ for Effective Cation−π Interaction

We have designed and synthesized a HAB-based receptor with six ethereal oxygens on one face of the central benzene ring by a trimerization of a diarylacetylene in which the ethereal oxygens are tied together with a tetramethylene bridge. This unique amphiphilic receptor allows an efficient binding of a single potassium cation by a synergistic interaction with the polar ethereal fence and with the central benzene ring via cation-pi interaction. Furthermore, the ready accessibility of this unique receptor with a bipolar binding pocket will allow the exploration of its usage for developing efficient sensing devices for various metal cations.

Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy of the Torsional Motions of 1,4-Bis(phenylethynyl)benzene

The torsional motions of jet-cooled 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene (BPEB), a prototype molecular wire, were studied using cavity ring-down spectroscopy in the first UV absorption band (316-321 nm). The torsional spectrum of 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)-2,3,5,6-tetradeuteriobenzene was also recorded in the gas phase. Both spectra were successfully simulated using simple cosine potentials to describe the torsional motions. The ground-state barrier to rotation was estimated to be 220-235 cm(-1), which is similar to that of diphenylacetylene (tolane). Complementary DFT calculations were found to overestimate the torsional barrier.

Hindered rotation in an "exploded" biphenyl

The first cases of hindered rotation around the triple bond in simple diphenylacetylenes were observed, including that in chiral 2,2'-bis(trimethylsilyl)-6,6'-bis(dimethylthexylsilyl)diphenylacetylene.
