Abstract
Hypervalent iodine(iii) compounds of the general structure ArIL2 are widely used as oxidizing agents for a variety of applications across both organic and inorganic chemistry. Considerable work has been done on the activation of these compounds by tuning the ligands at the iodine centre. This perspective summarises the work of our and other groups on rectification of historically misidentified iodine(iii) reagents of this class, and the syntheses of activated species. Recent advances focusing on increasing the oxidative capacity of I(iii) moieties using Lewis and Brønsted acids and Lewis bases as well as the activation of halogens with I(iii) are discussed.

Abstract
The transition-metal free S-vinylation of thiophenols by vinylbenziodoxolones (VBX) constituted an important step forward in hypervalent iodine-mediated vinylations, highlighting the difference to vinyliodonium salts and that the reaction outcome was influenced by the substitution pattern of the benziodoxolone core. In this study, we report several new classes of hypervalent iodine vinylation reagents; vinylbenziodazolones, vinylbenziodoxolonimine and vinyliodoxathiole dioxides. Their synthesis, structural and electronic properties are described and correlated to the S-vinylation outcome, shedding light on some interesting facets of these reagents.

Abstract
Neighboring group participation involving a 6-membered ring structure is rare, despite the privilege of 6-membered ring transition structures in organic chemistry. We examined the putative role of a 6-membered cyclic intermediate with neighboring group participation of nitrogen cation in syn-migration of peri-ester indanone oximes. Direct observation of a peri-methyl ester-iminylium intermediate in solution by means of 1H NMR supported the existence of the 6-membered cation intermediate. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also supported the intervention of this intermediate in the rearrangement and indicated that it has a planar structure stabilized by electron delocalization.

Abstract
A series of (E)-α-silyl-β-alkoxyvinyl-λ3-iodanes was synthesized from iodosylbenzene, BF3-ether complexes, and terminal ethynylsilanes. The combined use of BF3-OiPr2 and benzyl ethers of primary alcohols (ROBn) allows the chemoselective transfer of primary alkoxy groups (RO) onto the β-position of the terminal ethynylsilanes.

Abstract
A convenient procedure for the synthesis of aryl(trifloxyalkenyl)iodonium triflate salts from commercially available (diacetoxyiodo)benzene, trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate, and acetylenes under mild conditions was developed. The obtained multifunctional hypervalent vinyliodonium salts equipped with electrophilic and nucleophilic functions could serve as novel C2 synthons for organic transformations. The structure of the iodonium salts was identified by multidimensional NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
The fluorination of organic molecules is a rapidly evolving and exciting field in synthesis, which still poses huge challenges despite the advances made in the past decades. Hypervalent iodine(iii) reagents, which have already proven their versatility as synthetic tools in organic chemistry, are currently on the rise in fluorination chemistry. With their ability to break new mechanistic grounds, they grant access to completely new reactivities and thus also to novel fluorinated structural scaffolds. This review aims to provide an overview of the achievements made in the iodine(iii) mediated fluorinations of aliphatic Csp2-carbon atoms with special focus on the opportunities provided by this exciting class of hypervalent substances.

Abstract
The utility of benziodoxole triflate, derived from α,α-bis(trifluoromethyl)-2-iodobenzyl alcohol, as a versatile reagent for iodo(III)cyclization via electrophilic activation of alkyne, is reported herein. The reagent promotes cyclization of alkynes tethered to a variety of nucleophilic moieties, affording benziodoxole-appended (hetero)arenes such as benzofurans, benzothiophenes, isocoumarins, indoles, and polyaromatics under mild conditions. This unprecedented class of (hetero)aryl-IIII compounds proved easy to purify, stable, and amenable to various synthetic transformations.

Abstract
Fluorination mediated by the cyclic hypervalent fluoroiodane reagent (1) often requires an exogenous Lewis acid. The widely accepted Lewis-acid-activation model is that a given Lewis acid binds to the oxygen atom of 1 (O-coordination) to polarize the I-O bond. Computational studies of silver-mediated geminal difluorination of styrenes with 1 reveal a new "F-coordination" model that is energetically much preferred over the commonly accepted "O-coordination" model. The calculations rationalize the regioselective formation of the geminal difluorination product.

Abstract
The use of the hypervalent iodine reagents in oxidative processes has become a staple in modern organic synthesis. Frequently, the reactivity of λ3 iodanes is further enhanced by acids (Lewis or Brønsted). The origin of such activation, however, has remained elusive. Here, we use the common combination of PhI(OAc)2 with BF3·Et2O as a model to fully explore this activation phenomenon. In addition to the spectroscopic assessment of the dynamic acid-base interaction, for the first time the putative PIDA·BF3 complex has been isolated and its structure determined by X-ray diffraction. Consequences of such activation are discussed from a structural and electronic (DFT) points of views, including the origins of the enhanced reactivity.

Abstract
The mechanism and origin of the unexpected chemoselectivity in fluorocyclization of o-styryl benzamide with a cyclic hypervalent fluoroiodane reagent were explored with DFT calculations. The calculations suggested an alternative mechanism that is broadly similar to, but also critically different from, the previously proposed mechanism for the formation of an unexpected structurally novel seven-membered 4-fluoro-1,3-benzoxazepine. The amide group of o-styryl benzamide was revealed to be crucial for activating the fluoroiodane reagent and facilitating C-F bond formation. In contrast to the popular electrophilic N-F reagent Selectfluor, the F atom in the fluoroiodane reagent is nucleophilic, and the I(III) atom is the most electrophilic site, thus inducing a completely different reactivity pattern. The insights reported here will be valuable for the further development of new reactions based on the hypervalent fluoroiodane reagent.

Abstract
The preparation, structure, and chemistry of hypervalent iodine compounds are reviewed with emphasis on their synthetic application. Compounds of iodine possess reactivity similar to that of transition metals, but have the advantage of environmental sustainability and efficient utilization of natural resources. These compounds are widely used in organic synthesis as selective oxidants and environmentally friendly reagents. Synthetic uses of hypervalent iodine reagents in halogenation reactions, various oxidations, rearrangements, aminations, C-C bond-forming reactions, and transition metal-catalyzed reactions are summarized and discussed. Recent discovery of hypervalent catalytic systems and recyclable reagents, and the development of new enantioselective reactions using chiral hypervalent iodine compounds represent a particularly important achievement in the field of hypervalent iodine chemistry. One of the goals of this Review is to attract the attention of the scientific community as to the benefits of using hypervalent iodine compounds as an environmentally sustainable alternative to heavy metals.

Abstract
BCl3 is an inexpensive electrophile which induces the borylative cyclization of a wide range of substituted alkynes to regioselectively form polycycles containing synthetically versatile C(sp(2) )boronate esters. It proceeds rapidly, with good yields and is compatible with a range of functional groups and substitution patterns. Intermolecular 1,2-carboboration of alkynes is also achieved using BCl3 to generate trisubstituted vinyl boronate esters.

Abstract
A double migratory cascade reaction of α-halogen-substituted propargylic phosphates to produce highly functionalized 1,3-dienes has been developed. This transformation features 1,3-phosphatyloxy group migration followed by 1,3-shifts of bromine and chlorine as well as the unprecedented 1,3-migration of iodine. The reaction is stereodivergent: (Z)-1,3-dienes are formed in the presence of a copper catalyst, whereas gold-catalyzed reactions exhibit inverted stereoselectivity, producing the corresponding E products.
