Transition Metal Mimetic π-Activation by Cationic Bismuth(III) Catalysts for Allylic C-H Functionalization of Olefins Using C═O and C═N Electrophiles

The discovery and utilization of main-group element catalysts that behave similarly to transition metal (TM) complexes have become increasingly active areas of investigation in recent years. Here, we report a series of Lewis acidic bismuth(III) complexes that allow for the catalytic allylic C(sp3)-H functionalization of olefins via an organometallic complexation-assisted deprotonation mechanism to generate products containing new C-C bonds. This heretofore unexplored mode of main-group reactivity was applied to the regioselective functionalization of 1,4-dienes and allylbenzene substrates. Experimental and computational mechanistic studies support the key steps of the proposed catalytic cycle, including the intermediacy of elusive Bi-olefin complexes and allylbismuth species.

Domino ring-opening-ring-closing enyne metathesis vs enyne metathesis of norbornene derivatives with alkynyl side chains. Construction of condensed polycarbocycles

The metathesis of norbornene derivatives with alkynyl side-chain with Grubbs’ ruthenium alkylidine as catalyst has been investigated with the objective of constructing condensed polycyclic structures. This investigation demonstrated that the generally observed domino reaction course involving a ring-opening metathesis of the norbornene unit and a ring-closing enyne metathesis is influenced to a great extent by the nature of the functional group and the substrate structure and may follow a different reaction course than what is usually observed. In cases where ROM–RCEYM occurred, the resulting 1,3-diene reacts in situ with the dienophile to provide condensed tetracyclic systems.

Linear Triquinane Sesquiterpenoids: Their Isolation, Structures, Biological Activities, and Chemical Synthesis

Linear triquinane sesquiterpenoids represent an important class of natural products. Most of these compounds were isolated from fungi, sponges, and soft corals, and many of them displayed a wide range of biological activities. On account of their structural diversity and complexity, linear triquinane sesquiterpenoids present new challenges for chemical structure identification and total synthesis. 118 linear triquinane sesquiterpenoids were classified into 8 types, named types I–VIII, based on the carbon skeleton and the position of carbon substituents. Their isolation, structure elucidations, biological activities, and chemical synthesis were reviewed. This paper cited 102 articles from 1947 to 2018.

Recent applications of ring-rearrangement metathesis in organic synthesis

Ring-rearrangement metathesis (RRM) involves multiple metathesis processes such as ring-opening metathesis (ROM)/ring-closing metathesis (RCM) in a one-pot operation to generate complex targets. RRM delivers complex frameworks that are difficult to assemble by conventional methods. The noteworthy point about this type of protocol is multi-bond formation and it is an atom economic process. In this review, we have covered literature that appeared during the last seven years (2008–2014).

Design and synthesis of polycyclic sulfones via Diels-Alder reaction and ring-rearrangement metathesis as key steps

Here, we describe a new and simple synthetic strategy to various polycyclic sulfones via Diels–Alder reaction and ring-rearrangement metathesis (RRM) as the key steps. This approach delivers tri- and tetracyclic sulfones with six (n = 1), seven (n = 2) or eight-membered (n = 3) fused-ring systems containing trans-ring junctions unlike the conventional all cis-ring junctions generally obtained during the RRM sequence. Interestingly the starting materials used are simple and commercially available.

Design and synthesis of fused polycycles via Diels-Alder reaction and ring-rearrangement metathesis as key steps

Atom efficient processes such as the Diels–Alder reaction (DA) and the ring-rearrangement metathesis (RRM) have been used to design new polycycles. In this regard, ruthenium alkylidene catalysts are effective in realizing the RRM of bis-norbornene derivatives prepared by DA reaction and Grignard addition. Here, fused polycycles are assembled which are difficult to produce by conventional synthetic routes.

Computation and experiment reveal that the ring-rearrangement metathesis of Himbert cycloadducts can be subject to kinetic or thermodynamic control

Unusual observations in the ring-rearrangement metathesis of Himbert arene/allene cycloadducts to form fused polycylic lactams led to a more in-depth experimental study that yielded conflicting results. Differences in reactivity within related systems and unexpected changes in diastereoselectivity among other similar substrates were not readily explained on the basis of the experimental results. Computational investigations demonstrated substrate-dependent changes in reaction pathways (ring-opening metathesis/ring-closing metathesis [ROM/RCM] cascade vs ring-closing metathesis/ring-opening metathesis [RCM/ROM] cascade). Furthermore, some reactions were judged to be under thermodynamic control and others under kinetic control. The greater understanding of the most likely reaction pathways and their energetics provides a reasonable explanation for the previously irreconcilable results.
