Abstract
Group 10 metals including Ni, Pd and Pt have been extensively applied in various essential aspects of human social life, material science, industrial manufactures, medicines and biology. The ionic forms of these metals are involved in several biologically important processes due to their strong binding capability towards different biomolecules. However, the mishandling or overuse of such metals has been linked to serious contamination of our ecological system, more specifically in soil and water bodies with acute consequences. Therefore, the detection of group 10 metal ions in biological as well as environmental samples is of huge significance from the human health point of view. Related to this, considerable efforts are underway to develop adequately efficient and facile methods to achieve their selective detection. Optical sensing of metal ions has gained increasing attention of researchers, particularly in the environmental and biological settings. Innovatively designed optical probes (fluorescent or colorimetric) are usually comprised of three basic components: an explicitly tailored receptor unit, a signalling unit and a clearly defined reporter unit. This review deals with the recent progress in the design and fabrication of fluorescent or colorimetric organic sensors for the detection of group 10 metal ions (Ni(II), Pd(II) and Pt(II)), with attention to the general aspects for design of such sensors.

Abstract
Conducting polymers (CPs) are conductive materials composed of organic polymers. CPs have excellent properties such as easy synthesis and effortless fabrication, tunable electrical property, high environmental stability, high mechanical and optical properties. These unique properties have attracted researchers to discover a wide variety of uses, such as batteries, solar cells, sensors, supercapacitors, electrochromic devices, and biochemical applications. Although CPs have many limitations in their pristine form, hybridization with other materials overcomes these limitations. Here in this review article, we discuss different CPs based chemosensors for colorimetric and fluorimetric detection and determination of noble metal ions (Ag+, Pd2+, Pt2+/4+, and Au3+) in different environmental, agricultural, and biological samples. Further, the sensing performances of these chemosensors have been compared and discussed. We hope this article will help the readers with the future design of CPs based optical sensor (colorimetric and fluorescent) for detecting noble metal cations.

Abstract
Increased utilization of platinum ions in chemicals and drugs escalates environmental pollution and toxicity associated with Pt ions. However, current analysis and detection strategies of Pt ions display limited sensitivity due to the similar inert metal nature of platinum to gold. Herein, a photoinduced charge-separated molecule (MTPA)2Ab was synthesized as a probe for enhanced sensitive selection of Pt ions. Long-lived charge-separated states generated upon exposure to 365 nm light lead to a stable complex between (MTPA)2Ab and PtCl2/PtCl4 with highly-selectivity via sequential photoinduced electron transfers. Owing to the linear relationship of complex characteristic absorption and fluorescence emission intensities to Pt2+/Pt4+ concentrations, ultrasensitive spectrum analysis of Pt ions is achieved with a detection limit of 14.2 nM (2.8 ppb) for Pt2+ and 12.6 nM (2.5 ppb) for Pt4+ by an absorption spectrometer and 9.8 nM (1.9 ppb) for Pt ions (Pt2+/Pt4+) by a fluorescence spectrometer, far less than the reported values. Furthermore, a portable test box is developed based on (MTPA)2Ab test strips due to distinguishable color change with Pt2+/Pt4+ concentrations for rapid colorimetric detection of Pt ions. The results highlight the promise of photoinduced charge-separated molecular probe in ultrasensitive and rapid detection of Pt ions to overcome current limitations of detection strategies.

Abstract
Platinum complexes remain frontline anticancer therapies, even after 50 years of usage in clinical applications. However, there is still a lack of methodology to robustly detect and quantify these complexes in biological fluids. We report here a fluorescent sensor array comprising six sensors that demonstrates progress toward the detection of platinum levels in chemotherapy patients. Linear discriminant analysis was performed to examine each multidimensional data set, and the array was able to discriminate platinum from other biologically relevant metals and heavy metals and separately able to differentiate and identify platinum complexes with different coordination environments with 100% accuracy. Finally, the array showed sensitivity to various cisplatin and oxaliplatin concentrations in human plasma and was able to discriminate between a cohort of 27 cancer patients at different stages of platinum treatment. We envisage that our array system could lead to a better understanding of blood platinum concentrations of chemotherapy patients and could inform the modification of dosage regimes to minimize dose-limiting side effects.

Abstract
A direct detection protocol for the anticancer drug of cisplatin is highly desirable for studying its actions and side effects. In this work, a high quantum yield fluorescent probe with two-photon excitation to detect cisplatin was designed. The probe (RD640-TC) was based on the rhodamine 640 (Rh640) fluorophore, responding to cisplatin with red fluorescence. It showed an excellent linear correlation between the fluorescence response and the concentration of cisplatin over the range of 2-50 μM, suggesting a feasible tool for convenient detection of cisplatin. RD640-TC had high fluorescence quantum yield (Φ = 0.68) and two-photon absorption properties, which made it more favorable to probe cisplatin in biological systems. We exemplified RD640-TC for the detection of cisplatin in cells and zebrafish, providing an accessible tool for in vivo tracking of cisplatin, which has great potential value for studying how cisplatin is processed at cellular level and further for facilitating the investigation into the origin of cisplatin's toxicity.

Abstract
Two new dual channel Schiff base fluorescent probes, Tri-R6G and Tri-Flu, were synthesized, and can detect Hg2+ and Al3+, respectively. The two probes were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS, and their optical properties were detected by UV and FL. Test results showed the probes' detection of Hg2+ and Al3+ compared to other metal ions (Ag+, Co2+, Cd2+, Mg2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Ba2+, Pb2+, Cr3+, Al3+, Zn2+, Hg2+, K+, Ga2+ and Fe3+), respectively. Besides, the detection limits were determined to be 1.61 × 10-8 M and 1.15 × 10-8 M through the standard curve plot, respectively. The photoelectron transfer (PET) mechanism was guessed by the Job's plot and the infrared titration. Corresponding orbital electron distribution and molecular geometry configurations of the compounds were predicted by density functional theory (DFT). In addition, the prepared test paper changed from white to pink when the target ion was detected. The color changed from colorless to pink in a solution having a concentration of 10-5 M.

Abstract
Aim: To overcome the existing difficulty in distinguishing Fe(III) from Fe(II), rhodamine-containing Fe3+ probes, giving off different fluorescence responses to ferric and ferrous ions, were synthesized. Materials & methods: Color change in Fe3+ recognition, accompanying spirolactam opening–closing, could be used for ‘naked-eye’ detection. Theoretical calculations revealed the possible Fe3+-probe combination mechanism. Results: Apart from the probes’ specific response toward Fe3+, the Fe3+-probe demonstrated highly quantitative relationships in fluorescence titration, instant labeling and dynamic tracking of intracellular Fe3+ in bioimaging. Conclusion: Cytotoxity and bioimaging in living L929 suggested the probes’ future applications as real-time detection methods for Fe3+ in clinical diagnosis. Instant and time-lapse imagings, based on fluorescence-time stability of Fe3+-probe, enables the dynamic labeling and tracking of Fe3+ in living systems.

Abstract
A tripodal fluorescent probe L1 armed with Rhodamine B and 1-naphthaleneisothiocyanates was prepared in high yield. A study of the recognition properties revealed that probe L1 exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity towards Al3+ through a "FRET" fluorescence response and colorimetric response with low detection limits of the order of 10-8 M. Meanwhile, probe L1 also possessed high recognition ability for I- through fluorescence decay, which given there are comparatively few selective fluorescent probes for I-, is significant. Furthermore, the complexation mechanisms were fully investigated by spectral titrations, 1H NMR spectroscopic titrations and mass spectrometry. The utility of probe L1 as a biosensor in living cells (PC3 cells) towards Al3+ ions has also been demonstrated.

Abstract
Tuning the sensing properties of spiropyrans (SPs), which are one of the photochromic molecules useful for colorimetric sensing, is important for efficient analysis, but their synthetic modification is not always simple. Herein, we introduce an alkyne-functionalized SP, the modification of which would be easily achieved via Cu-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition ("click reaction"). The alkyne-SP was conjugated with a bis(triethylene glycol)-benzyl group (EG-BtSP) or a simple benzyl group (BtSP), forming a triazole linkage from the click reaction. The effects of auxiliary groups to SP were tested on metal-ion sensing and cyanide detection. We found that EG-BtSP was more Ca2+-sensitive than BtSP in acetonitrile, which were thoroughly examined by a continuous variation method (Job plot) and UV-VIS titrations, followed by non-linear regression analysis. Although both SPs showed similar, selective responses to cyanide in a water/acetonitrile co-solvent, only EG-BtSP showed a dramatic color change when fabricated on paper, highlighting the important contributions of the auxiliary groups.

Abstract
In this paper, we reported a new rhodamine derivative bearing 2,4-dichloroquinazoline as a selective fluorescent chemosensor for Hg(2+). The ring-opening process of spirolactam enabled the large fluorescent enhancement and colorimetric change by Hg(2+) induced configuration transformation of the rhodamine. Moreover, the fluorescence changes of the chemosensor were dramatically specific for Hg(2+) in the presence of other metal ions, which could meet the selective requirements for practical application. Under optimized experimental conditions, the linear response range covered the concentration range of Hg(2+) from 0 to 1.0×10(-6)M, and the limit of detection was calculated to be 2.7×10(-8)M. In addition, the probe was also successfully applied to the determination of Hg(2+) in water samples, test strips and living cells.

Abstract
The copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne "click" cycloaddition reaction is an efficient coupling reaction that results in the formation of a triazole ring. The wide range of applicable substrates for this reaction allows the construction of a variety of conjugated systems. The additional function of triazoles as metal-ion ligands has led to the click reaction being used for the construction of optical sensors for metal ions. The triazoles are integral binding elements, which are formed in an efficient modular synthesis. Herein, we review recent examples of triazoles as a metal-binding element in conjugated metal-ion sensors.
