Synthesis of Directly Connected BODIPY Oligomers through Suzuki–Miyaura Coupling

Small molecular donor materials based on β-β-bridged BODIPY dimers with a triphenylamine or carbazole unit for efficient organic solar cells

Herein, we have designed and synthesized two novel BODIPY dimer-based small molecules, denoted as ZMH-1 and ZMH-2, covalently linked and functionalized with triphenylamine (TPA) (ZMH-1) and carbazole (CZ) (ZMH-2) units as the electron donor at the 3- and 5-positions of the BODIPY core, respectively. Their optical and electrochemical properties were investigated. We have fabricated all small molecule bulk heterojunction organic solar cells using these BODIPY-based small molecules as electron donors along with fullerene derivative (PC71BM) and medium bandgap non-fullerene acceptor IDT-TC as electron acceptors. The optimized OSCs based on ZMH-1:PC71BM, ZMH-2:PC71BM, ZMH-1:IDT-IC, and ZMH-2:IDT-IC attain overall PCEs of 8.91%, 6.61%, 11.28%, and 5.48%, respectively. Moreover, when a small amount of PC71BM as guest acceptor is added to the binary host ZMH-1:IDT-TC and ZMH-2:IDT-TC, the ternary OSCs based on ZMH-1 and ZMH-2 reach PCEs of 13.70% and 12.71%, respectively.

BODIPY directed one-dimensional self-assembly of gold nanorods

The assembly of anisotropic nanomaterials into ordered structures is challenging. Nevertheless, such self-assembled systems are known to have novel physicochemical properties and the presence of a chromophore within the nanoparticle ensemble can enhance the optical properties through plasmon-molecule electronic coupling. Here, we report the end-to-end assembly of gold nanorods into micrometer-long chains using a linear diamino BODIPY derivative. The preferential binding affinity of the amino group and the steric bulkiness of BODIPY directed the longitudinal assembly of gold nanorods. As a result of the linear assembly, the BODIPY chromophores positioned themselves in the plasmonic hotspots, which resulted in efficient plasmon-molecule coupling, thereby imparting photothermal properties to the assembled nanorods. This work thus demonstrates a new approach for the linear assembly of gold nanorods resulting in a plasmon-molecule coupled system, and the synergy between self-assembly and electronic coupling resulted in an efficient system having potential biomedical applications.

A Practical and Modular Method for Direct C-H Functionalization of the BODIPY Core via Thianthrenium Salts

Direct structural modification of small-molecule fluorophores represents a straightforward and appealing strategy for accessing new fluorescent dyes with desired functionalities. We report herein a general and efficient visible-light-mediated method for the direct C-H functionalization of BODIPY, an important fluorescent chromophore, using readily accessible and bench-stable aryl and alkenylthianthrenium salts. This practical approach operates at room temperature with extraordinary site-selectivity, providing a step-economical means to construct various valuable aryl- and alkenyl-substituted BODIPY dyes. Remarkably, this protocol encompasses a broad substrate scope and excellent functional-group tolerance, and allows for the modular synthesis of sophisticated symmetrical and asymmetrical disubstituted BODIPYs by simply employing different combinations of thianthrenium salts. Moreover, the late-stage BODIPY modification of complex drug molecules further highlights the potential of this novel methodology in the synthesis of fluorophore-drug conjugates.

BODIPY(aryl)iodonium salts in the efficient synthesis of diversely functionalized BODIPYs and selective detection of serum albumin

BODIPY(aryl)iodonium salts were readily accessible from the high-yielding reaction of BODIPY with iodoarenes or hydroxyl(tosyloxy)iodoarenes in the presence of m-CPBA. The prepared BODIPY(aryl)iodonium salts bearing substituents of varied electronic nature were utilized for the direct syntheses of thiocyanate, azide, amine and acrylate functionalized BODIPYs and β,β'-bis-BODIPYs. The regioselective syntheses of α-piperidinyl and β-piperidinyl substituted BODIPYs were achieved through the reaction of BODIPY(aryl)iodonium salts with piperidine in the absence and presence of copper(I). Expeditious and high yielding (79-82%) synthesis of β,β'-bis-BODIPYs was also developed through the palladium-catalyzed reductive coupling of the easily accessible BODIPY(aryl)iodonium salts. Some of the indole-appended BODIPYs and bis-BODIPYs displayed strong absorption in the visible region (∼610 nm). The BODIPY(aryl)iodonium salts also showed significant binding with serum albumin and were observed to be selective serum protein sensors with estimated limits of detection as low as 7 μg mL-1 in some cases.

Linear Amine-Linked Oligo-BODIPYs: Convergent Access via Buchwald-Hartwig Coupling

A convergent route toward nitrogen-bridged BODIPY oligomers has been developed. The synthetic key step is a Buchwald-Hartwig cross-coupling reaction of an α-amino-BODIPY and the respective halide. Not only does the selective synthesis provide control of the oligomer size, but the facile preparative procedure also enables easy access to these types of dyes. Furthermore, functionalized examples were accessible via brominated derivatives.

Synthesis and Photophysical Characterizations of Benzimidazole Functionalized BODIPY Dyes

Herein, a series of new BODIPY dyes substituted by 2-phenyl benzimidazole units at the meso (C8) position including methyl/ethyl, phenyl, or p-methoxyphenyl moieties at the distal and proximal positions of the BODIPY core have been successfully synthesized and their photophysical characteristics were analyzed. Experimentally investigating absorption and fluorescence profiles in the THF media was followed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations to clarify photophysical features. Theoretical analyses have revealed that upon excitation, both electrons and holes are confined solely within the BODIPY core. The energy levels of the frontier molecular orbitals converge depending on the presence of the phenyl and p-methoxyphenyl substituents. The orbital distributions of both electron and hole were in the -3 and -5 positions, which demonstrates a continuous conjugation with the BODIPY core at these sites. However, the electron density present on the phenyl rings located at the -1, -7, and -8 (meso) positions was found to be negligible. The benzimidazole-BODIPYs exhibited photodynamic activity (Φ∆) ranging from ~ 7% to ~ 11%, determined by a comparative method. Moreover, the compounds have shown to maintain their stability thermally in a non-reactive/inert environment up to temperatures surpassing 300 °C, exhibiting primarily a two-phase decomposition process. These compounds have the potential to function as antibacterial and anti-biofilm agents when used in concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 mg/mL. The results provide a basis for evaluating heterocyclic benzimidazole units on photophysical processes containing BODIPY chromophores.

Visible-Light-Induced Direct Photoamination of BODIPY Dyes with Aqueous Ammonia

By taking advantage of their strong absorption ability, visible-light-induced direct photoamination of BODIPY dyes with aqueous ammonia was developed to give structurally diverse α-amino BODIPYs. The excited state of BODIPYs possessed higher electron affinity than the ground state and thus showed largely enhanced reactivity toward weak nucleophile of ammonia. Those α-amino BODIPYs are valuable synthetic intermediates and have been successfully demonstrated in several post-transformation reactions. The work indicates that photoreaction is an excellent alternative to conventional functionalization of this popular fluorophore.

Organoselenium Compounds: Chemistry and Applications in Organic Synthesis

Selenium, originally described as a toxin, turns out to be a crucial trace element for life that appears as selenocysteine and its dimer, selenocystine. From the point of view of drug developments, selenium-containing drugs are isosteres of sulfur and oxygen with the advantage that the presence of the selenium atom confers antioxidant properties and high lipophilicity, which would increase cell membrane permeation leading to better oral bioavailability. In this article, we have focused on the relevant features of the selenium atom, above all, the corresponding synthetic approaches to access a variety of organoselenium molecules along with the proposed reaction mechanisms. The preparation and biological properties of selenosugars, including selenoglycosides, selenonucleosides, selenopeptides, and other selenium-containing compounds will be treated. We have attempted to condense the most important aspects and interesting examples of the chemistry of selenium into a single article.

Bodipy Dimer for Enhancing Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Upconversion Performance

Triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) has considerable potential for emerging applications in bioimaging, optogenetics, photoredox catalysis, solar energy harvesting, etc. Fluoroboron dipyrrole (Bodipy) dyes are an essential type of annihilator in TTA-UC. However, conventional Bodipy dyes generally have large molar extinction coefficients and small Stokes shifts (<20 nm), subjecting them to severe internal filtration effects at high concentrations, and resulting in low upconversion quantum efficiency of TTA-UC systems using Bodipy dyes as annihilators. In this study, a Bodipy dimer (B-2) with large Stokes shifts was synthesized using the strategy of dimerization of an already reported Bodipy annihilator (B-1). Photophysical characterization and theoretical chemical analysis showed that both B-1 and B-2 can couple with the red light-activated photosensitizer PdTPBP to fulfill TTA-UC; however, the higher fluorescence quantum yield of B-2 resulted in a higher upconversion efficiency (η_UC) for PdTPBP/B-2 (10.7%) than for PdTPBP/B-1 (4.0%). This study proposes a new strategy to expand Bodipy Stokes shifts and improve TTA-UC performance, which can facilitate the application of TTA-UC in photonics and biophotonics.

Caging of Bodipy Photosensitizers through Hydrazone Bond Formation and their Activation Dynamics

Three unique hydrazone-based small-molecule-activatable photosensitizers were designed and synthesized. Two of them work efficiently in a low-pH environment, resembling the microenvironment of the cancerous tissues. The activation pathway is unique and based on hydrazone bond cleavage. They were investigated through in vitro cellular studies in aggressive cancer lines, and tumor-specific culture conditions successfully initiated the cleavage and activation of the cytotoxic singlet oxygen generation in the relevant time period. The interesting photophysical characteristics of the α- and β-substituted hydrazone derivatives of the Bodipy structures and their mild hydrolysis methodologies were also investigated successfully.

Regioselective Synthesis of Directly Connected BODIPY Dimers through Oxidative Coupling of α-Amino-Substituted BODIPYs

A family of directly β,β-linked BODIPY dimers with amino groups at α-positions were regioselectively prepared by the oxidative coupling reaction of α-amino-substituted BODIPYs. The structure of one representative dimer was elucidated by X-ray diffraction analysis, showing its twisted orientation of two BODIPY units with a dihedral angle of 49°. Comparing with the corresponding monomers, these dimers showed red-shifted absorptions and emissions along with efficient intersystem crossing, giving Φ_Δ of 43% for dimer 4b in toluene, indicating potential use as heavy-atom-free photosensitizers.

BODIPY as a Multifunctional Theranostic Reagent in Biomedicine: Self-Assembly, Properties, and Applications

The use of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) in biomedicine is reviewed. To open, its synthesis and regulatory strategies are summarized, and inspiring cutting-edge work in post-functionalization strategies is highlighted. A brief overview of assembly model of BODIPY is then provided: BODIPY is introduced as a promising building block for the formation of single- and multicomponent self-assembled systems, including nanostructures suitable for aqueous environments, thereby showing the great development potential of supramolecular assembly in biomedicine applications. The frontier progress of BODIPY in biomedical application is thereafter described, supported by examples of the frontiers of biomedical applications of BODIPY-containing smart materials: it mainly involves the application of materials based on BODIPY building blocks and their assemblies in fluorescence bioimaging, photoacoustic imaging, disease treatment including photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, and immunotherapy. Lastly, not only the current status of the BODIPY family in the biomedical field but also the challenges worth considering are summarized. At the same time, insights into the future development prospects of biomedically applicable BODIPY are provided.

Heterocyclic Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction of metalla-aromatics and mechanistic analysis of site selectivity

Pd-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling is one of the most straightforward and versatile methods for the construction of functionalized arenes and heteroarenes but site-selective cross-coupling of polyhalogenated (hetero)arenes containing identical halogen substituents remains a challenging problem. Herein, we report a new candidate for heterocyclic Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction. This candidate has been applied in organometallic systems by combining classical aryl boronic acid reagents with non-classical heteroarenes. Experimental and computational studies of the mechanism of the reactions were performed, with an emphasis on the identity of the reactive species in the oxidative addition step and the nature of the precise site selectivity. The influence of both the aromaticity of the metalla-aromatic substrates and the steric and electronic properties of the halogenated sites are studied in detail.

Photophysical properties of furan-bridged dimeric boron-dipyrromethene derivatives (BODIPYs)

In order to investigate the changes in the spectroscopic properties of dimeric boron-dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs), four BODIPY derivatives are synthesized, including a monomer BODIPY in which a furyl group is substituted at the meso position and a dimer BODIPY with a furan group as a bridge. The four synthesized BODIPY derivatives are characterized through nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. Photophysical properties such as ultraviolet–visible absorbance and the fluorescence emission of monomers (mT1 and mT2) and dimers (biT1 and biT2) are studied in eight different solvents. In addition, the relationship of their structural properties and optical properties are also considered through density functional theory calculations. The covalent link between the two BODIPY units using a furan group has a profound effect on the optical properties of the dimeric BODIPYs. We believe that an understanding of the synthesis and physical properties of dimeric BODIPYs will have a promising perspective in designing new BODIPY derivatives and predicting their spectroscopic characteristics in the future.

A porphyrin(2.1.2.1) bis-boron complex as a deep-red AIE luminophore induced by intermolecular F-π interaction

Mono-/diboron complexes with saddle-shaped molecular conformations were synthesized from porphyrins(2.1.2.1). The boron complexes have unique structure-dependent photophysical properties: (a) monoboron complexes 2a and 2b are not emissive in solution and the solid state, (b) diboron complex 3a shows red emission in toluene, and (c) diboron complex 3b shows aggregation-induced emission (AIE) in the deep-red region due to intermolecular secondary interactions (F-π). This is the first case of a boron porphyrinoid complex that shows AIE emission in the deep-red region in decades.

Transforming Dyes into Fluorophores: Exciton‐Induced Emission with Chain‐like Oligo‐BODIPY Superstructures

Herein we present a systematic study demonstrating to which extent exciton formation can amplify fluorescence based on a series of ethylene‐bridged oligo‐BODIPYs. A set of non‐ and weakly fluorescent BODIPY motifs was selected and transformed into discrete, chain‐like oligomers by linkage via a flexible ethylene tether. The prepared superstructures constitute excitonically active entities with non‐conjugated, Coulomb‐coupled oscillators. The non‐radiative deactivation channels of Internal Conversion (IC), also combined with an upstream reductive Photoelectron Transfer (rPET) and Intersystem Crossing (ISC) were addressed at the monomeric state and the evolution of fluorescence and (non‐)radiative decay rates studied along the oligomeric series. We demonstrate that a “masked” fluorescence can be fully reactivated irrespective of the imposed conformational rigidity. This work challenges the paradigm that a collective fluorescence enhancement is limited to sterically induced motional restrictions.

One-Pot Access to Ethylene-Bridged BODIPY Dimers and Trimers through Single-Electron Transfer Chemistry

A Cu(I)-promoted oxidative dimerization of BODIPY dyes was developed to give a series of α,α- ethylene-bridged BODIPY dimers and trimers for the first time. This methodology does not need harsh conditions but relies on the singlet-electron-transfer process between alkylated BODIPYs and Cu(I) salt to generate BODIPY-based radical species, which undergo a selective radical homocoupling reaction. Moreover, these resultant dimers and trimers showed high attenuation coefficients, small line widths of the absorption and emission, and intense fluorescence.

BODIPY derivatives as fluorescent reporters of molecular activities in living cells

Fluorescent compounds have become indispensable tools for imaging molecular activities in the living cell. 4,4-Difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) is currently one of the most popular fluorescent reporters due to its unique photophysical properties. This review provides a general survey and presents a summary of recent advances in the development of new BODIPY-based cellular biomarkers and biosensors. The review starts with the consideration of the properties of BODIPY derivatives required for their application as cellular reporters. Then review provides examples of the design of sensors for different biologically important molecules, ions, membrane potential, temperature and viscosity defining the live cell status. Special attention is payed to BODPY-based phototransformable reporters.

Palladium(II)-Catalyzed Dehydrogenative Strategy for Direct and Regioselective Oligomerization of BODIPY Dyes

A family of directly β,γ-linked BODIPY oligomers up to pentamers were regioselectively prepared via Pd(II)-catalyzed oxidative C-H cross-coupling. The structural integrity of β,γ-linked dimers was unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography. These structurally unprecedented oligomers showed red-shifted absorptions and near-infrared emissions along with efficient intersystem crossing, giving Φ_Δ in the range of 12-43%, for potential use as heavy-atom-free photosensitizers.

FeCl3-promoted regioselective synthesis of BODIPY dimers through oxidative aromatic homocoupling reactions

The direct 3,3'-dimerization of BODIPYs lacking substituent groups in the 1,2,6, and 7 positions was developed by oxidative coupling with FeCl₃. This regioselective dimerization was achieved for BODIPYs substituted only in the 5-position with Cl or aryl groups. Further functionalization of the 5,5'-dichloride dimer gave the corresponding pyrrole or 4-(2-aminoethyl)morpholine disubstituted dimers 2f and 2g, respectively. While dimer 2f exhibited intense NIR absorption/emission maxima at 773/827 nm in toluene, dimer 2g showed favorable lysosome-targeting NIR fluorescence in living cells.

BODIPY-Based Photodynamic Agents for Exclusively Generating Superoxide Radical over Singlet Oxygen

Developing Type-I photosensitizers is considered as an efficient approach to overcome the deficiency of traditional photodynamic therapy (PDT) for hypoxic tumors. However, it remains a challenge to design photosensitizers for generating reactive oxygen species by the Type-I process. Herein, we report a series of α,β-linked BODIPY dimers and a trimer that exclusively generate superoxide radical (O₂ ^-. ) by the Type-I process upon light irradiation. The triplet formation originates from an effective excited-state relaxation from the initially populated singlet (S₁ ) to triplet (T₁ ) states via an intermediate triplet (T₂ ) state. The low reduction potential and ultralong lifetime of the T₁ state facilitate the efficient generation of O₂ ^-. by inter-molecular charge transfer to molecular oxygen. The energy gap of T₁ -S₀ is smaller than that between ³ O₂ and ¹ O₂ thereby precluding the generation of singlet oxygen by the Type-II process. The trimer exhibits superior PDT performance under the hypoxic environment.

Synthesis, Structure and Photophysical Properties of a New Class of Inherently Chiral Boron(III) Chelates-The tert-Leucine Complexes

A new family of boron(III) chelates is introduced whereby molecular chirality, confirmed by circular dichroism, is imported during synthesis such that isolation of the diastereoisomers does not require separation procedures. The photophysical properties of two members of the family have been examined: the N,O,O-salicylaldehyde-based derivative shows pronounced intramolecular charge-transfer character in fluid solution and is weakly fluorescent, with a large Stokes shift. The corresponding 2-methylamino-benzaldehyde-derived N,N,O-chelate absorbs and fluoresces in the visible region with a much smaller Stokes shift. Orange fluorescence is also observed for this compound as a cast film. Temperature-dependence studies show that decay of the fluorescent state is weakly activated but emission is less than quantitative at 77 K. Quite rare for boron(III)-based chelates, this derivative undergoes intersystem crossing to form a meta-stable triplet-excited state. X-ray crystal structures are reported for both compounds, along with simulated ECD spectra.

The Suzuki–Miyaura reaction of BPin-substituted F-BODIPYs with aryl halides

F-BODIPYs substituted with BPin functionality have been coupled to aryl halides using a mild and efficient catalyst system involving Pd2(dba)3 and XPhos. The methodology enables the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling of electron-rich, electron-poor, and sterically encumbered BPin-substituted F-BODIPYs to aryl halides bearing various functional groups, thus presenting an opportunity for the preparation of highly functionalised F-BODIPYs without need for the corresponding aryl moiety to be available in borylated form.

Fundamental studies to emerging applications of pyrrole-BF2 (BOPHY) fluorophores

This review highlights the up-and-coming pyrrole-BF₂ (BOPHY) fluorophores, with a focus on synthetic procedures, photophysical properties – including structure–property analyses – as well as emerging applications.

Highly regioselective palladium-catalyzed domino reaction for post-functionalization of BODIPY

A series of benzo[a]-fused BODIPYs and the corresponding isomeric naphthyl-BODIPYs have been synthesized through a facile one-pot palladium-catalyzed domino reaction of BODIPY precursors (2-bromo-BODIPYs) with diarylethynes.

Vinylene-Bridged Cyclic Dipyrrin and BODIPY Trimers

Vinylene-bridged cyclic boron–difluoride complex of dipyrrin (BODIPY) trimers were successfully prepared from expanded dimethyl-vinylene bridged hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) Me-Hex that has the structure of alternate dipyrrins and vinylene bridges. The hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) Me-Hex can coordinate with boron ions to afford five kinds of cyclic BODIPYs given by step-by-step boron complexations. Crystal structures of all cyclic BODIPYs except for 3BF₂-Me-Hex(b) formed non-planar structures. The theoretical calculation predicted that mono-/bis-boron cyclic BODIPYs show the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) characteristics, whereas tri-boron cyclic BODIPYs have no ICT characteristics. Reflecting these electronic properties, tri-boron cyclic BODIPYs exhibit weak fluorescence in the red region, but mono-/bis-boron cyclic BODIPYs exhibit no emission. Vinylene bridged cyclic dipyrrin trimer Me-Hex is the novel porphyrinoid ligand allowed to control the boron coordination under different reaction conditions to form various boron complexes.

Synthesis and Functions of Oligomeric and Multidentate Dipyrrin Derivatives and their Complexes

The dipyrrin–metal complexes and especially the boron complex 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) have recently attracted considerable attention because of their interesting properties and possible applications. We have developed two unique and useful ways to extend versatility and usefulness of the dipyrrin complexes. The first one is the linear and macrocyclic oligomerization of the BODIPY units. These arrangements of the B–F moieties of the oligomerized BODIPY units provide sophisticated functions, such as unique recognition ability toward cationic guest, associated with changes in the photophysical properties by utilizing unprecedented interactions between the B–F and a cationic species. The second one is introduction of additional ligating moieties into the dipyrrin skeleton. The multidentate N2Ox dipyrrin ligands thus obtained form a variety of complexes with 13 and 14 group elements, which are difficult to synthesize using the original N2 dipyrrin derivatives. Interestingly, these unique complexes exhibit novel structures, properties, and functions such as guest recognition, stimuli-responsive structural conversion, switching of the optical properties, excellent stability of the neutral radicals, etc. We believe that these multifunctional dipyrrin complexes will advance the basic chemistry of the dipyrrin complexes and develop their applications in the materials and medicinal chemistry fields.

Strategic Construction of Ethene-Bridged BODIPY Arrays with Absorption Bands Reaching the Near-Infrared II Region

An efficient strategy for the controllable synthesis of BODIPY arrays based on the Stille cross-coupling reaction has been developed, from which a family of well-defined ethene-bridged BODIPY arrays from dimer to hexamer was synthesized. These arrays showed strong absorptions reaching the near-infrared II (NIR II, 1000-1700 nm) region with maxima tunable from 702 nm (dimer) to 1114 nm (hexamer) and possessed efficient light-harvesting capabilities, excellent photostability, and good photothermal conversion abilities under NIR light irradiation.

Heavy-atom-free BODIPY photosensitizers with intersystem crossing mediated by intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer

Organic photosensitizers possessing efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) and forming long-living triplet excited states, play a crucial role in a number of applications. A common approach in the design of such dyes relies on the introduction of heavy atoms (e.g. transition metals or halogens) into the structure, which promote ISC via spin-orbit coupling interaction. In recent years, alternative methods to enhance ISC have been actively studied. Among those, the generation of triplet excited states through photoinduced electron transfer (PET) in heavy-atom-free molecules has attracted particular attention because it allows for the development of photosensitizers with programmed triplet state and fluorescence quantum yields. Due to their synthetic accessibility and tunability of optical properties, boron dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs) are so far the most perspective class of photosensitizers operating via this mechanism. This article reviews recently reported heavy-atom-free BODIPY donor-acceptor dyads and dimers which produce long-living triplet excited states and generate singlet oxygen. Structural factors which affect PET and concomitant triplet state formation in these molecules are discussed and the reported data on triplet state yields and singlet oxygen generation quantum yields in various solvents are summarized. Finally, examples of recent applications of these systems are highlighted.

Rigidochromic conjugated polymers carrying main-chain molecular rotors

We design and prepare rigidochromic conjugated polymers that carry molecular rotors in the main chain. We show how a suitable design maintains the mechanosensitivity of the rotors upon incorporation into an extended π-conjugated system. Construction of donor-acceptor polymers enables their use as ratiometric probes for polymer micromechanics, which we evidence through micromechanical imaging of a phase-separated polymer blend.

β-AlkenylBODIPY Dyes: Regioselective Synthesis via Oxidative C-H Olefination, Photophysical Properties, and Bioimaging Studies

A series of 2-alkenyl- and 2,6-dialkenylboron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives were synthesized through Pd(II)-catalyzed regioselective and stereoselective oxidative C-H olefination in one step. The 2-alkenyl BODIPY derivative further reacted with various amines regioselectively at the 5-position through direct oxidative nucleophilic substitution. The photophysical properties of the 2-alkenyl- and 2,6-dialkenyl-substituted BODIPYs were investigated, which showed great potential in fluorescent bioimaging.

A Conformationally Flexible Macrocyclic Dipyrrin Tetramer and Its Unsymmetrically Twisted Luminescent Zinc(II) Complex

A macrocyclic dipyrrin tetramer containing flexible m-phenylene linkages and its tetranuclear zinc(II) complex were synthesized. The obtained complex has an unsymmetrical figure-of-eight structure because of the conformational flexibility of the macrocyclic framework. The first μ-hydroxo- and μ-acetato-bridged dinuclear zinc(II) dipyrrin complex structure is realized in the twisted macrocyclic complex. Furthermore, the complex exhibited an efficient emission in toluene and chloroform.
