Abstract
Serendipitous formation of cyclic β-ketosulfones is observed when sulfone-tethered arylalkynols are reacted with base. The reaction involves a base-promoted propargyl sulfone to the allene isomerization/intramolecular hydroalkoxylation/retro-oxa-Michael/6-endo-trig Michael addition cascade. Sulfone-tethered alkynyl acrylates gave stereoselective access to a diverse array of spirocyclic β-ketosulfone benzofuran/isochroman/indolines and sulfone-tethered bridged bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane. These cyclic β-ketosulfones could be readily elaborated into benzofuran-fused cyclic sulfones and tetracyclic spiroindoline.

Abstract
1,4-Oxathiins are valued for a breadth of bioactivities and are known commercial fungicides. This article explores a novel preparation of 2,3,6-trisubstituted 1,4-oxathiin-S,S-dioxides via the reaction of benzyl 1-alkynyl sulfones and aryl aldehydes under basic conditions. A total of 20 examples possessing exclusively a trans arrangement of the 2,3-diaryl substituents are exhibited; the products demonstrate a variation of functional groups on the aryl ring attached to the heterocyclic ring system. The preparation is hindered by the base sensitivity of the products, and a ring-opened by-product typically contaminates the reaction mixture. A DFT assessment of the overall system includes a lithium counterion and offers possible pathways for the incorporation of the aldehyde, the cyclization step and the requisite proton transfers. In addition, the DFT work reveals options for the ring opening chemistry. It appears the trans 2,3-diaryl selectivity is set during the cyclization stage of the reaction sequence. The practical work uncovers a new reaction pathway to create a family of novel 1,4-oxathiin-S,S-dioxides whereas the computational work offers an understanding of the structures and possible mechanisms involved.

Abstract
A novel Brønsted acid-catalyzed oxidative C-H functionalization of alkynyl thioethers has been developed. This method allows the practical synthesis of valuable isothiochroman-3-ones in mostly moderate to good yields under mild reaction conditions and features a broad substrate scope and wide functional group tolerance. Moreover, this metal-free oxidation can also be used to promote formal N-H insertion involving an unexpected 1,2-sulfur migration, affording useful 1,4-benzothiazin-3-ones.

Abstract
Recent advances in the sulfonylation of C–H bonds with the insertion of sulfur dioxide are summarized. C–H bond sulfonylation under transition metal catalysis or through a radical process has been developed. In some cases, the sulfonylation can be performed under catalyst- and additive-free conditions, or can be facilitated by visible light irradiation. The efficiency is also studied by merging the radical process and metal catalysis.

Abstract
Flash vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) of benzo[c]thiopyran S,S-dioxide (1) results in formation of indene and 2-vinylbenzaldehyde as previously described. A range of eight analogues with various substitution patterns are found to behave differently. In general, there is no extrusion of SO2 to give products analogous to indene, but unsaturated carbonyl products analogous to 2-vinylbenzaldehyde are formed in most cases by way of ring expansion to a 7-membered ring sultine, extrusion of SO, and intramolecular hydrogen atom transfer. Other processes observed include formation of anthracene via an isomeric 7-membered sultine with loss of SO, CO and methane or butane, and formation of 4-ethylidene-4,5-dihydrocyclobuta[b]thiophenes by way of SO loss, a radical rearrangement, and extrusion of acetone. The analogues with a halogen substituent at position 8 on the benzene ring require a higher temperature to react and give naphthalene resulting from net elimination of HX and SO2. The X-ray crystal structure of 1 is also reported.
