Photoresponsive Supramolecular Cages and Macrocycles

The utilisation of light to achieve precise manipulation and control over the structure and function of supramolecular assemblies has emerged as a highly promising approach in the development of complex, configurable, or multifunctional systems and nanoscopic machine-like entities. In this minireview, we highlight recent examples of self-assembled and covalently bound cages and macrocycles with a focus on the external and internal functionalisation of a structure with a photoswitchable unit or the embedment of a photoswitch into the framework of a structure. Functionalising the interior or exterior of a supramolecular cage or macrocycle with a photoresponsive group enables control over different properties, such as guest binding or assembly in the solid-state, while the overall shape of the assembly often undergoes no significant change. By directly integrating a photoswitchable unit into the framework of a supramolecular structure, the isomerisation can either induce a geometry change, the disassembly, or the disassembly and reassembly of the structure. Historical and recent examples covered in this review are based on azobenzene, diarylethene, stilbene photoswitches, or alkene motors that were incorporated into macrocycles and cages constructed by metal-organic, dynamic covalent, or covalent bonds.

Multiple Azoarenes Based Systems - Photoswitching, Supramolecular Chemistry and Application Prospects

In the recent decades, the investigations on photoresponsive molecular systems with multiple azoarenes are quite popular in diverse perspectives ranging from fundamental understanding of multiple photoswitches, supramolecular chemistry, and various application prospects. In fact, several insightful and conceptual designs of such systems were investigated with architectural distinctions. In particular, the demonstration of applications such as data storage with the help of multistate or orthogonal photoswitches, light modulation of catalysis via cooperative switching, sensors using supramolecular host-guest interactions, and materials such as liquid crystals, grating, actuators, etc. are some of the milestones in this area. Herein, we cover the recent advancements in the research areas of multiazoarenes containing systems that have been classified into Type-1 {linear, non-linear, and core-based (A)}, Type-2 {tripodal C₃ -symmetric (C3)} and Type-3 {macrocyclic (M)} structural motifs.

Visible-Light Responsive Sucrose-Containing Macrocyclic Host for Cations

Chiral photoresponsive host 1 was prepared by a high-yield Cs₂CO₃-templated macrocyclization. Trans-1 transforms into long-lived cis-1 (25 days) upon irradiation with green light, and the backward transformation is triggered by blue light. Both isomers prefer potassium among alkali metal cations, and cis-1 binds cations stronger than trans-1 (K_cis/K_trans ≤ 4.1). ¹H NMR titration experiments as well as density functional theory studies reveal that sucrose ring oxygen residues and azobenzene nitrogen atoms in 1 contribute to cation coordination.

Tuning of Bistability, Thermal Stability of the Metastable States, and Application Prospects in the C3 -Symmetric Designs of Multiple Azo(hetero)arenes Systems

Light-responsive molecular systems with multiple photoswitches in C₃ -symmetric designs have enormous application potential. The design part of such molecular systems is critical due to its influence in several properties associated with the photoswitches. In order to tune, and in the evaluation of the design-property relationship, we synthesized 18 tripodal systems with variations in the core, linkers, connectivity, and azo(hetero)arene photoswitches. Through extensive spectroscopic and computational studies, we envisaged the factors controlling near-quantitative photoisomerization in both the directions (bistability) and the thermal stability of the metastable states. Furthermore, we also evaluated the impact of designs in obtaining reversible photo-responsive sol-gel phase transitions, solvatochromism, photo- and thermochromism.

Control of Photoisomerization of an Azoazacryptand by Anion Binding and Cucurbit[8]uril Encapsulation in an Aqueous Solution

Control of isomerization of a receptor bearing multiple light-switchable subunits in a confined space is critical for the design of synthetic molecular machines. Toward this goal, a new azacryptand containing three azobenzene subunits has been developed, and its photoisomerization in an aqueous solution has been studied depending on anion coordination and recognition by a larger host-cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). The cryptand in its hexaprotonated form shows considerable affinity for fluoride and perchlorate, which in turn affects the isomer distribution of the receptor under UV-light irradiation, stabilizing the isomers of the cryptand with Z-configurations. CB[8] was found to be able to encapsulate the isomers of the cryptand by forming a Matryoshka-type complex. The irradiation of a 10:1 CB[8]-cryptand mixture has led to a selective conversion of the cryptand to the E,E,Z isomer inside CB[8]. It has been demonstrated that the addition of fluoride to the resulted complex induces the release of the cryptand as a major E,E,E isomer, while other studied anions were ineffective in this reaction. To our knowledge, this work presents a first example of a host-controlled photoisomerization of an anion receptor bearing multiple switching azobenzenes that model the function of naturally occurring chaperones.

Selective switching of multiple azobenzenes

Multi-state photoswitchable compounds are highly attractive for application in data storage or multi-responsive materials. Herein, a trisazobenzene macrocycle is presented, which can be switched selectively into three individual states.

Multi-state photoswitchable compounds are highly attractive for application in data storage or multi-responsive materials. In this work, a trisazobenzene macrocycle capable of three-state isomerization is presented. The compound can be switched into each of the states with more than 70% of the isomer solely by light and heat as stimuli representing the first example for an oligo-azobenzene containing identical photochromic units which can be selectively adressed. Detailed spectroscopic, crystallographic, HPLC as well as computational investigations and the comparison to a less and a higher strained derivative revealed macrocyclic ring strain to be responsible for the compounds unique isomerization behavior.

Computational design of a molecular triple photoswitch for wavelength-selective control

meta-Trisazobenzenes allow for wavelength-selective photo-switching of the individual azobenzene branches.

A small single molecule with multiple photoswitchable subunits, selectively and independently controllable by light of different wavelengths, is highly attractive for applications in multi-responsive materials and biological sciences. Herein, triple photoswitches are presented consisting of three independent azobenzene (AB) subunits that share a common central phenyl ring: the meta-trisazobenzenes (MTA). It is the unique meta-connectivity pattern leading to decoupling of all azo-subunits although they do overlap spatially. Based on this pattern, we design a triple MTA photoswitch, as proof-of-principle, with three different, electronically independent AB branches on the computer, which can be individually photo-excited to trigger ultra-fast E → Z isomerization at the selected AB branch.

Azo group(s) in selected macrocyclic compounds

Azobenzene derivatives due to their photo- and electroactive properties are an important group of compounds finding applications in diverse fields. Due to the possibility of controlling the trans-cis isomerization, azo-bearing structures are ideal building blocks for development of e.g. nanomaterials, smart polymers, molecular containers, photoswitches, and sensors. Important role play also macrocyclic compounds well known for their interesting binding properties. In this article selected macrocyclic compounds bearing azo group(s) are comprehensively described. Here, the relationship between compounds' structure and their properties (as e.g. ability to guest complexation, supramolecular structure formation, switching and motion) is reviewed.

A two-step approach to a glycoazobenzene macrocycle with remarkable photoswitchable features

A straightforward synthetic route provided a glycoazobenzene macrocycle showing distinct chiroptical and solubility behaviour upon photoswitching.
