Abstract
4-Quinolone and its analogs are heterocyclic classes of organic compounds displaying biologically active and a broad spectrum of pharmaceutical drug scaffolds. 4-Quinolone is the first-line chemotherapeutic treatment for a wide spectrum of bacterial infections. Recently, 4-quinolone and its derivatives have been shown to have the potential to cure and regulate various acute and chronic diseases, including pain, ischemia, immunomodulation, inflammation, malarial, bacterial infection, fungal infection, HIV, and cancer, based on several reports. This review highlights and provides brief information to better understand the development of experimental progress made to date in the synthetic protocol towards 4-quinolone and its analogs. Thus, classical synthesis protocol, metal-free reaction protocol, and transition metal-catalyzed reaction procedures are briefly discussed along with the pharmaceutical activities of selected 4-quinolone derivatives.

Abstract
A facile and effective tandem reaction of ynones and methyl salicylates was developed to obtain a broad range of 3-acyl chromones in moderate-to-excellent yields. This protocol underwent a Michael addition and cyclization process, which exhibited easily accessible substrates, broad substrate scope, and high regioselectivity under mild and transition-metal-free conditions. Moreover, gram-scale reaction and further chemical transformation of the products were also further studied.

Abstract
A robust metal- and solvent-free cascade radical-induced C-N cleavage/intramolecular 6-endo-dig annulation/hydrocarbonylation for the synthesis of the valuable 2-aryl-4H-chromen-4-ones is described. This practical synthesis strategy utilizes propargylamines and air as the oxygen source and green carbonylation reagent, in which propargylamines are activated by the inexpensive and available dimethyl 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionate) (AIBME) and (PhSe)2 as the radical initiators. This simple and green protocol features wide substrate adaptability, good functional group tolerance, and amenability to scaling up and derivatizations.

Abstract
A variety of chroman-4-ones bearing phosphine oxide motifs were conveniently synthesized from readily available diphenylphosphine oxides and alkenyl aldehydes via a metal-free tandem phosphinoylation/cyclization protocol. The reaction utilizes K2S2O8 as oxidant and proceeds in DMSO/H2O at environmentally benign conditions with a broad substrate scope and afforded the title compounds in moderate yields.

Abstract
A novel green and efficient catalyst-free, mild one-pot, multicomponent synthetic strategy has been developed to construct substituted 3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[b][1,4]oxazine. This reaction proceeds via in situ formation of Schiff-base followed by base mediated alkylation with phenacyl bromide/substituted phenacyl bromide, finally leading to intramolecular cyclization to give a mixture of diastereomers with excellent diastereoselectivity (up to dr = 99:1), which were isolated as a single diastereomer in moderate to excellent yields (41-92%). Besides, this new versatile methodology provides a wide scope for the synthesis of different functionally substituted benzoxazine scaffolds and can be further exploited as building blocks for the synthesis of multifaceted molecular structures, especially for pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
A practical and efficient method for selective intramolecular radical trifluoromethylacylation and -arylation of alkenes with inexpensive CF3SO2Na and K2S2O8 in aqueous media has been developed, respectively, affording the highly chemoselective synthesis of CF3-functionalized chroman-4-ones and chromanes in satisfactory yields. Control experiments and DFT calculations indicate that the CF3SO2Na/K2S2O8 system is capable of trifluoromethylating the substrate of alkenes without a transition metal catalyst and the oxidation of CF3SO2Na to ·CF3 by K2S2O8 is involved in the rate-determining step.

Abstract
The influences of reaction parameters on the etherification of phenols to obtain 1-bromo-2-aryloxyethane derivatives were evaluated. The compounds were prepared by direct etherification of phenols with 1,2-dibromoethane using anhydrous K2CO3 and acetonitrile as solvent reaction, at 80°C, in a reaction time of 6 h. Under these conditions, excellent yields (71%–94%) were obtained, with low yields of secondary products. The anhydrous K2CO3 was recycled by simple filtration, dried in vacuum, and reused. The compounds were characterized by conventional spectral data (MS and NMR). Larvicidal activity results showed a 100% larval mortality after 24-hour exposure to the compound 1-(2-bromoethoxy)-2-phenylbenzene.

Abstract
A low cost, safe, clean and environmentally benign base-catalyzed cyclodehydration of appropriate β-diketones affording (E)-2-styrylchromones and flavones in good yields is disclosed. Water was used as solvent and the reactions were heated using classical and microwave heating methods, under open and closed vessel conditions. β-Diketones having electron-donating and withdrawing substituents were used to evaluate the reaction scope. The reaction products were isolated in high purity by simple filtration and recrystallization from ethanol, when using 800 mg of the starting diketone under classical reflux heating conditions.

Abstract
A novel procedure for hydride-induced anionic cyclization has been developed. It includes the reduction of a biaryl bromo-nitrile with a nucleophilic aromatic substitution (S(N)Ar). A range of polysubstituted 6-H-phenanthridines were so obtained in moderate to good yield with good substrate tolerance. This method involves a concise transition-metal-free process and was applied to synthesize natural alkaloids.
