Abstract
Postconsumer plastics are generally perceived as valueless with only a small portion of plastic waste being closed-loop recycled into similar products while most of them are discarded in landfills. Depositing plastic waste in landfills not only harms the environment but also signifies a substantial economic loss. Alternatively, constructing value-added chemical feedstocks via mining the waste-derived intermediate species as a carbon (C) source under mild electrochemical conditions is a sustainable strategy to realize the circular economy. This proof-of-concept work provides an attractive "turning trash to treasure" strategy by integrating electrocatalytic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic upcycling with a chemical C-S coupling reaction to synthesize organosulfur compounds, hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS). HMS can be produced efficiently (Faradaic efficiency, FE of ∼70%) via deliberately capturing electrophilic intermediates generated in the PET monomer (ethylene glycol, EG) upcycling process, followed by coupling them with nucleophilic sulfur (S) species (i.e., SO32- and HSO3-). Unlike many previous studies conducted under alkaline conditions, PET upcycling was performed over an amorphous MnO2 catalyst under near-neutral conditions, allowing for the stabilization of electrophilic intermediates. The compatibility of this strategy was further investigated by employing biomass-derived compounds as substrates. Moreover, comparable HMS yields can be achieved with real-world PET plastics, showing its enormous potential in practical application. Lastly, Density function theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the C-C cleavage step of EG is the rate-determining step (RDS), and amorphous MnO2 significantly decreases the energy barriers for both RDS and C-S coupling when compared to the crystalline counterpart.

Abstract
This review explores the pivotal role of sulfur in advancing sustainable carbon-carbon (C-C) coupling reactions. The unique electronic properties of sulfur, as a soft Lewis base with significant mesomeric effect make it an excellent candidate for initiating radical transformations, directing C-H-activation, and facilitating cycloaddition and C-S bond dissociation reactions. These attributes are crucial for developing waste-free methodologies in green chemistry. Our mini-review is focused on existing sulfur-directed C-C coupling techniques, emphasizing their sustainability and comparing state-of-the-art methods with traditional approaches. The review highlights the importance of this research in addressing current challenges in organic synthesis and catalysis. The innovative use of sulfur in photocatalytic, electrochemical and metal-catalyzed processes not only exemplifies significant advancements in the field but also opens new avenues for environmentally friendly chemical processes. By focusing on atom economy and waste minimization, the analysis provides broad appeal and potential for future developments in sustainable organic chemistry.

Abstract
When developing a synthetic methodology, chemists generally optimize a single substrate and then explore the substrate scope of their method. This approach has led to innumerable and widely-used chemical reactions. However, it frequently provides methods that only work on model substrate-like compounds. Perhaps worse, reaction conditions that would enable the conversion of other substrates may be missed. We now show that a different approach, originally proposed by Kagan, in which a collection of structurally distinct substrates are evaluated in a single reaction vessel, can not only provide information on the substrate scope at a much earlier stage in methodology development, but even lead to a broadly applicable synthetic methodology. Using this multi-substrate screening approach, we have identified an efficient and stereoselective imidodiphosphorimidate organocatalyst for scalable Diels-Alder reactions of cyclopentadiene with different classes of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes.

Abstract
The asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction of α-substituted acrolein proceeds in the presence of the trifluoroacetic acid salt of trifluoromethyl-substituted diarylprolinol silyl ether to afford the exo-isomer with both excellent diastereoselectivity and high enantioselectivity. In the Diels-Alder reaction of a β,β-disubstituted α,β-unsaturated aldehyde, good exo-selectivity and excellent enantioselectivity was obtained when the perchloric acid salt of the bulky triisopropyl silyl ether of trifluoromethyl substituted diarylprolinol was employed as an organocatalyst in the presence of water. In both cases, all-carbon quaternary stereocenters are constructed enantioselectively.

Abstract
The first enantioselective Diels-Alder reaction of 1,2-dihydropyridines with α-acyloxyacroleins catalyzed by a chiral primary ammonium salt has been developed and it offers more efficient routes to key synthetic intermediates of alkaloids, for which the direct preparations were unavailable before. The asymmetric induction can be understood through the optimized geometry of an iminium salt aqua complex derived from the catalyst and the dienophile.

Abstract
A novel method for metal-free oxothiolation of ynamides to construct oxazolidine-2,4-diones bearing sulfur-substituted quaternary carbon atoms has been developed. It represents a rare C-O bond cleavage of ynamides, as well as a facile and tandem approach for the formation of C-O, C-S, and C-Cl bonds. This redox-neutral protocol can be applied to the synthesis of multisubstituted oxazolidine-2,4-diones with good chemoselectivity and good yields of isolated products under mild conditions.

Abstract
Enantioselective protonation with a catalytic enamine intermediate represents a challenging, yet fundamentally important process for the synthesis of α-chiral carbonyls. We describe herein chiral primary-amine-catalyzed conjugate additions of indoles to both α-substituted acroleins and vinyl ketones. These reactions feature enamine protonation as the stereogenic step. A simple primary-tertiary vicinal diamine 1 with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH) was found to enable both of the reactions of acroleins and vinyl ketones with good activity and high enantioselectivity. Detailed mechanistic studies reveal that these reactions are rate-limiting in iminium formation and they all involve a uniform H2 O/acid-bridged proton transfer in the stereogenic steps but divergent stereocontrol modes for the protonation stereoselectivity. For the reactions of α-branched acroleins, facial selections on H2 O-bridged protonation determine the enantioselectivity, which is enhanced by an OH⋅⋅⋅π interaction with indole as uncovered by DFT calculations. On the other hand, the stereoselectivity of the reactions with vinyl ketones is controlled according to the Curtin-Hammett principle in the CC bond-formation step, which precedes a highly stereospecific enamine protonation.
