Abstract
1H NMR spectroscopic studies using BINOL as a chiral solvating agent (CSA) for a scalemic sulfiniminoboronic acid (SIBA) have revealed concentration- and enantiopurity-dependent variations in the chemical shifts of diagnostic imine protons used to determine enantiopurity levels. 11B/15N NMR spectroscopic studies and X-ray structural investigations revealed that unlike other iminoboronate species, BINOL-SIBA assemblies do not contain N-B coordination bonds, with 1H NMR NOESY experiments indicating that intermolecular H-bonding networks between BINOL and the SIBA analyte are responsible for these variations. These effects can lead to diastereomeric signal overlap at certain er values that could potentially lead to enantiopurity/configuration misassignments. Consequently, it is recommended that hydrogen-bonding-CSA-based 1H NMR protocols should be repeated using both CSA enantiomers to ensure that any concentration- and/or er-dependent variations in diagnostic chemical shifts are accounted for when determining the enantiopurity of a scalemic analyte.

Abstract
The review covers the chemistry of organoboron heterocycles structurally related to benzoxaboroles where one of the carbon atoms in a boracycle or a fused benzene ring is replaced by a heteroelement such as boron, silicon, tin, nitrogen, phosphorus, or iodine. Related ring expanded systems including those based on naphthalene and biphenyl cores are also described. The information on synthetic methodology as well as the basic structural and physicochemical characteristics of these emerging heterocycles is complemented by a presentation of their potential applications in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry, the latter aspect being mostly focused on the promising antimicrobial activity of selected compounds.

Abstract
Cyclic boronate esters play important roles in organic synthesis, pharmacology, supramolecular chemistry and materials science owing to their stability in air and versatile reactivity. Most of these compounds contain a B-O-C linkage with an alkoxy- or carboxylate group bound to the boron atom (e.g. boronate-diol esters, MIDA boronates). Boron chelates comprising a B-O-N motif (BON heterocycles) are much less explored, although first representatives of this class were prepared in the early 1960s. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in BON heterocycles as new chemotypes for drug design. The exocyclic B-O-N linkage, which is readily formed under mild conditions, shows surprising hydrolytic and thermal resistance. This allows the formation of BON heterocycles to be used as click-type reactions for the preparation of bioconjugates and functionally modified polymers. We believe that BON heterocycles are promising yet underrated organoboron derivatives. This review summarizes the scattered information about known types of BON heterocycles, including their synthesis, reactivity and structural data. Available applications of BON heterocycles in materials science and medicinal chemistry, along with their prospects, are also discussed. The bibliography contains 289 references.

Abstract
A practically simple three-component chiral derivatization protocol has been developed to determine the enantiopurity of eight S-chiral sulfinamides by 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopic analysis, based on their treatment with a 2-formylphenylboronic acid template and enantiopure pinanediol to afford a mixture of diastereomeric sulfiniminoboronate esters whose diastereomeric ratio is an accurate reflection of the enantiopurity of the parent sulfinamide.

Abstract
Enantiomers have significant importance in pharmaceuticals, biology and modern chemistry and therefore distinguishing and quantifying the enantiomeric forms is of utmost importance. Herein, we propose diphenyl-3,3'-biphenanthryl-4,4'-diyl phosphate (R-VAPOL-PA) as a promising chiral solvating agent to discriminate amines and acids of poly-functional groups such as chiral amines, amino alcohols and hydroxy acids. The methodological approach involves using the nature of hydrogen bonds and ion pairs as a mode of weak interactions to form diastereomers where the probe is associated with enantiomers. The resulting diastereomer difference in the NMR spectrum enables the chiral discrimination with a complete baseline peak separation and an accurate enantiomeric excess (ee) analysis. We also carried out density functional theory (DFT) calculations to understand the complex formation to explain enantiodiscrimination by analysing the formation and stability of different chiral complexes. The binding energy differences between enantiomeric forms revealed by DFT calculations are qualitatively in agreement with the diastereomer difference in the NMR spectrum and unequivocally establishes the suggested experimental protocol of R-VAPOL-PA-based enantiomeric discrimination.

Abstract
An axially chiral binuclear μ-hydroxo Pd complex (BPHP) first served as an excellent chiral sensor for discriminating a variety of analytes including amino alcohol, amino amide, amino acid, mandelic acid, diol, diamine, and monoamine by 31P{1H} NMR. A detailed recognition mechanism was proposed based on the single crystal and mass spectrum of Pd-complexes. In general, BPHP sensor, through extracting the acidic hydrogen of an analyte by its Pd-OH group, forms stable diastereomeric complexes with two enantiomers of the analyte giving well distinguishable split 31P{1H} NMR signals for chiral discrimination.

Abstract
The Bull-James boronic acid assembly is used simultaneously as a chiral auxiliary for kinetic resolution and as a chiral shift reagent for in situ enantiomeric excess (ee) determination by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Chiral terminal alkyne-containing amines, and their corresponding chiral triazoles formed via CuAAC, were probed in situ. Selectivity factors of up to s = 4 were imparted and measured, accurate to within ±3% when compared to chiral GC.

Abstract
A broad palette of bioconjugation reactions are available for chemical biologists, but an area that still requires investigation is high-rate constant reactions. These are indispensable in certain applications, particularly for in vivo labelling. Appropriately positioned boronic acids accelerate normally sluggish Schiff base condensations of α-effect nucleophiles by five orders of magnitude - providing a new entry to the rare set of reactions that have a rate constant above 100 M(-1) s(-1) under physiological conditions. I summarize here a number of recent reports, including work from my own group, and outline a mechanistic picture that explains the differing behaviour of seemingly similar substrate classes.

Abstract
Self-assembly and directed-assembly are two very important aspects of supramolecular chemistry. As a young postgraduate student working in Canada with Tom Fyles my introduction to Supramolecular Chemistry was through the self-assembly of phospholipid membranes to form vesicles for which we were developing unimolecular and self-assembling transporter molecules. The next stage of my development as a scientist was in Japan with Seiji Shinkai where in a “Eureka” moment, the boronic acid templating unit (directed-assembly) of Wulff was combined with photoinduced electron transfer systems pioneered by De Silva. The result was a turn-on fluorescence sensor for saccharides; this simple result has continued to fuel my research to the present day. Throughout my career as well as assembling molecules, I have enjoyed bringing together researchers in order to develop collaborative networks. This is where molecules meet people resulting in assemblies worth more than the individual “molecule” or “researcher”. My role in developing networks with Japan was rewarded by the award of a Daiwa-Adrian Prize in 2013 and I was recently rewarded for developing networks with China with an Inaugural CASE Prize in 2015.

Abstract
The objective of this Feature Article is to reflect on the importance of established and emerging principles of supramolecular organic chemistry to address one of the most persistent problems in life sciences. The main topic is dynamic covalent chemistry on cell surfaces, particularly disulfide exchange for thiol-mediated uptake. Examples of boronate and hydrazone exchange are added for contrast, comparison and completion. Of equal importance are the discussions of proximity effects in polyions and counterion hopping, and more recent highlights on ring tension and ion pair-π interactions. These lessons from supramolecular organic chemistry apply to cell-penetrating peptides, particularly the origin of "arginine magic" and the "pyrenebutyrate trick," and the currently emerging complementary "disulfide magic" with cell-penetrating poly(disulfide)s. They further extend to the voltage gating of neuronal potassium channels, gene transfection, and the delivery of siRNA. The collected examples illustrate that the input from conceptually innovative chemistry is essential to address the true challenges in biology beyond incremental progress and random screening.

Abstract
Bioorthogonal reactions that are fast and reversible under physiological conditions are in high demand for biological applications. Herein, it is shown that an ortho boronic acid substituent makes aryl ketones rapidly conjugate with α-nucleophiles at neutral pH. Specifically, 2-acetylphenylboronic acid and derivatives were found to conjugate with phenylhydrazine with rate constants of 10(2) to 10(3) M(-1) s(-1) , comparable to the fastest bioorthogonal conjugations known to date. (11) B NMR analysis revealed the varied extent of iminoboronate formation of the conjugates, in which the imine nitrogen forms a dative bond with boron. The iminoboronate formation activates the imines for hydrolysis and exchange, rendering these oxime/hydrazone conjugations reversible and dynamic under physiological conditions. The fast and dynamic nature of the iminoboronate chemistry should find wide applications in biology.

Abstract
Although they combine the best of covalent and non-covalent bonds, dynamic covalent bonds are usually not used together. Building on pioneering examples for functional systems with two orthogonal dynamic covalent bonds, we herein elaborate on multicomponent surface architectures that operate with three different types of dynamic covalent bonds. Disulfide exchange under basic conditions is used to grow single π stacks directly on oxide surfaces, hydrazone exchange under acidic conditions to add a second string or stack, and boronic-ester exchange under neutral conditions to build the third one. In this study, we show that this synthetic approach to complex systems provides access to emergent properties, as exemplified with ordered stacks of anthocyanins, pyrocatchol violet and riboflavins. The integration of anthocyanins, the central component of the pigments of plant flowers, is interesting to protect the blue flavylium cation against deprotonation, deplanarization and degradation. The integration of pyrocatchol violet is of interest to stabilize the blue, disfavored tritylium cation. The red riboflavin stacks are attractive because they generate high photocurrent. These colorful examples hint at the potential of synthetic methods that use three different types of dynamic covalent bonds in concert to build complex systems with emergent properties.

Abstract
We report the first fluorescence-based assay for the rapid determination of the ee value of amines, amino alcohols, and amino acid esters. The method uses the self-assembly of 2-formylphenylboronic acid with a chiral diol and a chiral amine or derivatives (of unknown chirality) to produce two diastereomeric iminoboronates that differ in their fluorescence intensity and polarization. The approach allows for the accurate determination of the ee value of chiral amines with errors of just 1-2%. We believe that this application of orthogonal dynamic covalent self-assembly in the determination of the enantioselectivity will lead to the development of high-throughput procedures for the determination of chirality.

Abstract
We report here the discovery and development of boron-assisted oxime formation as a powerful connective reaction for chemical biology.
We report here the discovery and development of boron-assisted oxime formation as a powerful connective reaction for chemical biology. Oximes proximal to boronic acids form in neutral aqueous buffer with rate constants of more than 104 M–1 s–1, the largest to date for any oxime condensation. Boron's dynamic coordination chemistry confers an adaptability that seems to aid a number of elementary steps in the oxime condensation. In addition to applications in bioconjugation, the emerging importance of boronic acids in chemical biology as carbohydrate receptors or peroxide probes, and the growing list of drugs and drug candidates containing boronic acids suggest many potential applications.
