Abstract
An AB2C type four-component quadruple cascade reaction has been established between nitroallylic MBH acetate, 1,3-indanedione and aldehyde for generating bis-spirocyclohexanes. This reaction progressed in an unusual [1 + 1 + 1 + 3] annulation manner via a Knoevenagel/Michael/Michael/Michael sequence, resulting in the generation of three/four chiral centres, and two all-carbon quaternary centres through the formation of 3 new C-C bonds.

Abstract
A regioselective [3+2] cyclisation reaction between 2-arylidene-1,3-indanedione and ethyl 2,3-butadienoate catalysed by triphenylphosphine has been demonstrated to synthesize functionalised spirocyclic cyclopentenes. The reaction tolerated various electron-rich and electron-deficient aryl substituted 2-arylidene-1,3-indanediones with high to excellent chemical yields (up to 99%) and moderate to good regioselectivity (up to 5 : 1). DFT studies have also been carried out to understand the regioselective nature of this reaction. The results of Frontier molecular orbital calculations and the activation energy (Ea) favour the formation of compound 3avia γ-attack compared to that of 4avia α-attack. A [3+2] annulation protocol for the construction of functionalized spirocyclopentenes utilizing 1,3-indanedione derived benzylidene-1,3-indanedione and ethyl-2,3-butadienoate at room temperature was developed.![]()

Abstract
K2CO3-mediated one-pot tandem conversion from sulfonyl 2-pyridyl flavanones to dipyridyl dispirocyclohexanes with contiguous multiple stereogenic centers was accomplished in good yields via an intramolecular desulfonylative ring-contraction of sulfonyl 2-pyridyl flavanones followed by an intermolecular Michael-Michael-aldol (2 + 2 + 2) annulation of the resulting pyridyl aurone intermediate with methyl ketones under facile, open-vessel, inexpensive and environmentally friendly reaction conditions. A plausible mechanism is proposed and discussed herein. This protocol provides a highly effective ring-closure via three carbon-carbon (C-C) bond formation.

Abstract
We have developed an efficient one-pot, two-step sequential process to synthesize biologically and synthetically important chiral acetal-containing polycyclic derivatives. This novel protocol had been proved to proceed via Michael-lactolization-oxocarbenium ion ring-closing sequence, which was initiated by a key reactive enamine intermediate and interrupted the previously established reaction pathway of two different enones used in this work, and generated the corresponding cycloadducts with excellent stereoselectivity bearing up to seven continuous stereocenters. Both chiral and racemic starting cyclic hemiacetals worked well in this strategy. The synthetic applications of the obtained polycyclic products have also been demonstrated.

Abstract
A cinchona-alkaloid-derived chiral primary-amine-catalyzed enantioselective method for the synthesis of the thermodynamically less stable indanedione-fused 2,6-trans-disubstituted spirocyclohexanones is demonstrated. Both the enantiomeric forms of the trans isomer are obtained in excellent yields and enantioselectivities. Furthermore, one of the enantiopure trans-spiranes bearing an additional α-substitution on the cyclohexanone ring was then epimerized into its thermodynamically stable cis counterpart, with little loss of enantioselectivity to demonstrate the feasibility of such a transformation. Mechanistic investigations revealed two competing pathways, a concerted Diels-Alder reaction and a stepwise Michael addition, for the formation of corresponding products.

Abstract
Rapid growth of complexity and unprecedented molecular architectures are realized via the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) in o-acylamidobenzaldehydes and ketones followed by [4+2] or [4+4] cycloadditions with subsequent postphotochemical modifications. The approach is congruent with Diversity-Oriented Synthesis: photoprecursors are synthesized in a modular fashion allowing for up to four diversity inputs. The complexity of the primary photoproducts is further enhanced using straightforward and high-yielding postphotochemical modification steps such as reactions with nitrile oxides, nitrones, Povarov reaction, and oxa-Diels-Alder reaction.

Abstract
An efficient organocascade quadruple reaction was conducted to synthesize a functionalized spiropolycyclic scaffold in high chemical yields (43-80%) and excellent levels of stereoselectivity (up to >19:1 dr and 99% ee). The quadruple reaction proceeded smoothly between 1,3-indanedione and aromatic aldehydes with concomitant desymmetrization of prochiral 4-substituted cyclohexanones through the Knoevenagel/Michael/aldol/aldol reaction sequence catalyzed by a bifunctional thiourea catalyst. Two of the formed products were transformed into spirocyclic epoxides containing four contiguous quaternary centers.
