Abstract
3-Benzylidene-indoline-2-ones play a prominent role in the pharmaceutical industry due to the diverse biomedical applications of oxindole heterocycles. Despite the extensive reports on their biological properties, these compounds have hardly been studied for their photochemical activity. Here, we present 3-benzylidene-indoline-2-ones as a promising class of photoswitches with high yields, robust photochemical switching with quantum yields reaching up to 50 % and potential for biological applications.

Abstract
Here, we report controlled E-Z isomeric motion of the functionalized 3-benzylidene-indolin-2-ones under various solvents, temperature, light sources, and most importantly effective enhancement of light irradiance in microfluidic photoreactor conditions. Stabilization of the E-Z isomeric motion is failed in batch process, which might be due to the exponential decay of light intensity, variable irradiation, low mixing, low heat exchange, low photon flux etc. This photo-μ-flow light driven motion is further extended to the establishment of a photostationary state under solar light irradiation.

Abstract
New D-π-A configured organic sensitizers featuring halogen-substituted oxindole-bridged acceptor units have been synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells applications. Among fluorine, bromine, and iodine substitution, the cell based on bromine incorporated dye exhibited the highest efficiency. The oxindoles in these sensitizers were found to assist the electron injection through the chelation of their amide carbonyl groups to the TiO2 surface. This study provides an alternate approach for future rational dye design to gain excellent DSSC performance.

Abstract
In our continued efforts to improve the potential utility of the α-methylene-γ-lactone scaffold, 62 new and 59 known natural α-methylenelactam analogues including α-methylene-γ-lactams, α-arylidene-γ and δ-lactams, and 3-arylideneindolin-2-ones were synthesized as the bioisosteric analogues of the α-methylenelactone scaffold. The results of antifungal and cytotoxic activity indicated that among these derivatives compound (E)-1-(2, 6-dichlorobenzyl)-3-(2-fluorobenzylidene) pyrrolidin-2-one (Py51) possessed good selectivity with the highest antifungal activity against Colletotrichum orbiculare with IC50 = 10.4 μM but less cytotoxic activity with IC50 = 141.2 μM (against HepG2 cell line) and 161.2 μM (against human hepatic L02 cell line). Ultrastructural change studies performed by transmission electron microscope showed that Py51 could cause important cell morphological changes in C. orbiculare, such as plasma membrane detached from cell wall, cell wall thickening, mitochondria disruption, a dramatic increase in vacuolation, and eventually a complete loss in the integrity of organelles. Significantly, mitochondria appeared one of the primary targets, as confirmed by their remarkably aberrant morphological changes. Analysis of structure-activity relationships revealed that incorporation of the aryl group into the α-exo-methylene and the N-benzyl substitution increased the activity. Meanwhile, the α-arylidene-γ-lactams have superiority in selectivity over the 3-arylideneindolin-2-ones. Based on the results, the N-benzyl substituted α-(2-fluorophenyl)-γ-lactam was identified as the most promising natural-based scaffold for further discovering and developing improved crop-protection agents.

Abstract
Developing highly efficient organic dyes with panchromatic visible light harvesting for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is still one of the most important scientific challenges. Here, we design a series of phenothiazine derivative organic dyes with donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) structure using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) based on experimentally synthesized typical SH-6 organic dyes. Results indicate that the newly designed BUCT13 - BUCT30 dyes show smaller HOMO-LUMO energy gaps, higher molar extinction coefficients and obvious redshifts compared to the SH-6 dye, and the maximum absorption peaks of eight dyes are greater than 650 nm among the newly designed dyes. In particular, BUCT27 exhibits a 234 nm redshift and the maximum molar extinction coefficient with an increment of about 80% compared to the SH-6 dye. BUCT19 exhibits not only a 269 nm redshift and higher molar extinction coefficient with an increment of about 50% compared to the SH-6 dye, but the extremely broad absorption spectrum covering the entire visible range up to the near-IR region of 1200 nm. It is expected that this work can provide a new strategy and guidance for the investigation of these dye-sensitized devices.

Abstract
Indoline photosensitizers exhibit impressive short-circuit photocurrent but generally low molar extinction coefficient and rapid charge recombination, which limits their application in thin-film dye-sensitizerd solar cells (DSCs). Here, we incorporate a new dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole (DTP) segment (i.e., dihexyloxy-triphenylamine (DHO-TPA) substituted DTP) as the conjugated π-linker to construct a series of high molar absorption coefficient indoline dyes (XW69, XW70, and XW71) for DSCs employing a cobalt(II/III) redox electrolyte. Interestingly, this DTP linker is demonstrated as an efficient building block, not only slowing down the kinetics of charge recombination of titania electrons with tris(1,10-phenanthroline)cobalt(III) ions but also making a great contribution to the light absorption properties in comparison with the dihexylaniline substituted DTP. With respect to the dihexyloxy-triphenylamine dye (XW68), these new indoline dyes exhibit stronger light-harvesting and thus better power conversion efficiency of DSCs made from thin titania films. Benefitting from the bulky rigidity of the donor and π-conjugation unit, the XW70 dye displays a promising conversion efficiency as high as 8.78%, with a short-circuit current density (J(SC)) of 13.3 mA cm(-2), open-circuit voltage (V(OC)) of 943 mV, and fill factor (FF) of 0.70 under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW cm(-2)). Furthermore, the effect of light irradiation on these dyes adsorbed on nanocrystalline TiO2 films was investigated, proving the photostability of these indoline chromophores. Our work has valued the feasibility of judicious design of indoline chromophores to obtain organic photosensitizers for high-efficiency iodine-free DSCs made from thin titania films.
