Abstract
In recent decades, the traceless nature of visible photons has been exploited for the development of efficient synthetic strategies for the photoconversion of colourless compounds, namely, photocatalysis, chromophore activation, and the formation of an electron donor/acceptor (EDA) complex. However, the use of photoreactive coloured organic compounds is the optimal strategy to boost visible photons as ideal reagents in synthetic protocols. In view of such premises, the present review aims to provide its readership with a collection of recent photochemical strategies facilitated via direct light absorption by coloured molecules. The protocols have been classified and presented according to the nature of the intermediate/excited state achieved during the transformation.

Abstract
The thiazole-2-imine derivatives with interesting pharmacological activities have attracted significant attention. However, previously reported synthesis strategies usually suffered from some drawbacks, such as the use of metals/additive and harsh reaction conditions. Herein, we developed a metal- and photoinitiator-free photocatalytic strategy for the synthesis of various selenium-substituted thiazole-2-imine derivatives for the first time. The reaction displayed mild reaction conditions, simple operation, a broad substrate scope (37 examples), and good to excellent yields.

Abstract
Dichalcogenides (disulfides and diselenides), as reactants for organic transformations, are important and widely used because of their potential to react with nucleophiles, electrophilic reagents, and radical precursors. In recent years, in combination with photochemical technology, the application of dichalcogenides as stable radical reagents has opened up a new route to the synthesis of various sulfur- and selenium-containing compounds. In this paper, synthetic strategies for disulfides and diselenides and their applications with photochemical technology are reviewed: (i) Cyclization of dichalcogenides with alkenes and alkynes; (ii) direct selenylation/sulfuration of C-H/C-C/C-N bonds; (iii) visible-light-enabled seleno- and sulfur-bifunctionalization of alkenes/alkynes; and (iv) Direct construction of the C(sp)-S bond. In addition, the scopes, limitations, and mechanisms of some reactions are also described.

Abstract
![]()
A transannular approach has been developed for the construction
of pyrrolo[1,2-b]isoquinolinones starting from benzo-fused
nine-membered enelactams. This process takes place in the presence
of a halogenating agent and under Brønsted acid catalysis and
proceeds via a transannular amidohalogenation, followed by elimination.
The reaction has been found to be wide in scope, enabling the formation
of a variety of tricyclic products in good overall yield, regardless
of the substitution pattern in the initial lactam substrate. The reaction
has also been applied to the total synthesis of a reported topoisomerase
I inhibitor and to the formal synthesis of rosettacin. Further extension
of this methodology allows the preparation of 10-iodopyrrolo[1,2-b]isoquinolinones by using an excess of halogenating agent
and these compounds can be further manipulated through standard Suzuki
coupling chemistry into a variety of 10-aryl-substituted pyrrolo[1,2-b]isoquinolinones.

Abstract
The organoselenium-catalyzed amination of alkenes is a promising way to construct functionalized amines. However, the use of chemical oxidants and the unavoidable formation of allylic amine or enamine are the two main limitations of these methodologies. Against this background, we herein report an electro-selenocatalytic regime for the hydroazolylation of alkenes with azoles under external oxidant-free conditions with low catalyst loadings. Moreover, this protocol enables the generation of amines without vinyl substituents.

Abstract
γ-Lycorane, a degradation product of the Aromaticaceae alkaloid lycorine, is one of the most attractive molecules in the Aromaticaceae family. It remains a popular target for synthesis due to its pentacyclic structure, which presents a vehicle for demonstrating the utility of new synthetic strategies. Various synthetic methods have been developed by synthetic chemists since the first synthesis of γ-lycorane by Nasuo in 1966. Thus, this review presents an overview of the literature on the ways utilized within the synthesis of γ-lycorane in racemic and enantiopure forms via electrophilic arylation, Pd-catalyzed C-C coupling, Bischler-Napieralski cyclization, Pictet-Spengler cyclization, photocyclization, radical cyclization, chiral pool synthesis, chiral auxiliary-mediated synthesis, and catalytic asymmetric synthesis, ranging from 1966 to 2022.

Abstract
The total synthesis of (-)-γ-lycorane (10 steps) and synthesis of (±)-γ-lycorane (8 steps) was completed from cyclohexenone. A new two step hydrogen borrowing alkylation of an aziridinyl alcohol, coupled with a Ph* (Me5C6) deprotection/cyclisation procedure was developed for de novo formation of the fused 6,5 heterocyclic ring. This work is one of the first examples of hydrogen borrowing C-C bond formation being used as a key step in a total synthesis project.

Abstract
Reactions are described for complexes of the form WTp(NO)(PMe3)(η2-arene) and various amines, where the arene is benzene or benzene with an electron-withdrawing substituent (CF3, SO2Ph, SO2Me). The arene complex is first protonated to form an η2-arenium species, which then selectively adds the amine. The resulting η2-5-amino-1,3-cyclohexadiene complexes can then be subjected to the same sequence with a second nucleophile to form 3-aminocyclohexene complexes, where up to three stereocenters originate from the arene carbons. Alternatively, 1,3-cyclohexadiene complexes containing an ester group at the 5 position (also prepared from an arene) can be treated with acid followed by an amine to form trisubstituted 3-aminocyclohexenes. When the amine is primary, ring closure can occur to form a cis-fused bicyclic γ-lactam. Highly functionalized cyclohexenes can be liberated from the tungsten through oxidative decomplexation. The potential utility of this methodology is demonstrated in the synthesis of the alkaloid γ-lycorane. An enantioenriched synthesis of a lactam precursor to γ-lycorane is also described. This compound is prepared from an enantioenriched version of the tungsten benzene complex. Regio- and stereochemical assignments for the reported compounds are supported by detailed 2D-NMR analysis and 13 molecular structure determinations (SC-XRD).

Abstract
A time-economical and robust synthesis of various selenofunctionalized heterocycles was accomplished via I2O5-mediated selenocyclizations of olefins with diselenides. Using this method, 116 selenomethyl-substituted heterocycles were synthesized with up to 97% isolated yield in minutes. Additional features of this new protocol include the use of an inorganic oxidant, mild conditions, and easy operation. Preliminary investigations suggest that the transformation operates through selenenyl iodide-induced electrophilic cyclization.

Abstract
A practical electrophilic aminoselenation of O-homoallyl benzimidate with diselenides promoted by PhICl2/Cu2O has been developed. The easily available and stable diselenides were used as selenium sources. Various selenyl 1,3-oxazines, which are important frameworks in medicinal and biological chemistry, were easily obtained in moderate to good yields for the first time. Easy scaleup and scalability make this method attractive for the preparation of other valuable organoselenides.

Abstract
Organoselenium compounds constitute an important class of substances with applications in the biological, medicinal and material sciences as well as in modern organic synthesis, attracting considerable attention from the scientific community. Therefore, the construction of the C-Se bond via facile, efficient and sustainable strategies to access complex scaffolds from simple substrates are an appealing and hot topic. Visible light can be regarded as an alternative source of energy and is associated with environmentally-friendly processes. Recently, the use of visible-light mediated seleno-functionalization has emerged as an ideal and powerful route to obtain high-value selenylated products, with diminished cost and waste. This approach, involving photo-excited substrates/catalyst and single-electron transfer (SET) between substrates in the presence of visible light has been successfully used in the versatile and direct insertion of organoselenium moieties in activated and unactivated C(sp3 )-H, C(sp2 )-H, C(sp)-H bonds as well as C-heteroatom bonds. In most cases, ease of operation and accessibility of the light source (LEDs or commercial CFL bulbs) makes this approach more attractive and sustainable than the traditional strategies.

Abstract
An efficient copper-catalyzed cyclization cascade approach towards highly functionalized methylene 4-chromanol and aurone derivatives has been developed from reactions of ynols via 6-exo-dig and 5-exo-dig cyclization respectively. The catalysis involves alkyne activation via diorgano-diselenides and also their regioselective incorporation into the methylene 4-chromanol and aurone derivative core and is an open-air transformation.

Abstract
A novel and green route has been developed for the electrochemical synthesis of spiro[4.5]trienones through radical-initiated dearomative spirocyclization of alkynes with diselenides. This metal-free and oxidant-free electrosynthesis reaction was performed in an undivided cell under mild conditions. A variety of selenation spiro[4.5]trienones products were prepared in moderate-to-good yields, showing a broad scope and functional group tolerance. Moreover, the developed continuous-flow system combined with electrosynthesis possesses the potential to achieve scaled-up reactions, overcoming the low efficiency of conventional electrochemical scaled-up reactions.

Abstract
A novel and sustainable procedure was developed for the synthesis of 3-selenylindoles employing diorganyl diselenides and indoles or electron-rich arenes as starting materials. Visible blue light was used to promote the reaction without employing transition metal complexes or organic photocatalysts as sensitizers. Additives such as strong oxidants or bases were not required. Moreover, ethanol was employed as a benign solvent under mild reaction conditions. Through this easy and eco-friendly approach, several 3-selenylindoles and a number of asymmetric diarylselenides were obtained in good to excellent isolated yields. A novel and sustainable procedure for the synthesis of 3-selenylindoles employing diorganyl diselenides and indoles or electron-rich arenes and promoted by visible light was developed.![]()

Abstract
An intramolecular acylal cyclisation (IAC) approach to the synthesis of a range of bicyclic heterocycles is reported. As an example of the utility of the IAC reaction, the methodology was applied in a protecting-group-free five-step total synthesis of (±)-γ-lycorane, incorporating a new intramolecular Heck addition reaction to generate the pentacyclic core structure of the natural product in good yield.
