Abstract
Calix[4]arenes bearing urea units at the meta position(s) of the upper rim of the macrocyclic skeleton were prepared by the reaction of the corresponding amines with aryl isocyanates. As shown by the 1H NMR and UV/vis titration experiments, these systems are capable of effectively complexing selected anions even in a highly competitive environment (such as DMSO-d6). While the monoureido derivatives showed approximately the same complexation ability irrespective of the substitution (para vs. meta isomers), the bisureas at the upper rim demonstrated interesting differences in complexation. The meta, meta and para, para isomers were shown to prefer 2 : 1 complexes (anion : receptor) regardless of the anion tested, while the analogous meta, para isomer formed 1 : 1 complexes with strongly coordinated anions (e.g. H2PO4-) based on synchronous complexation by both ureido groups. This suggests that the regioselective introduction of urea units into the upper rim of calix[4]arene brings with it the possibility of "tuning" the complexation properties depending on the substitution pattern of the functional groups.

Abstract
Calix[n]arenes represent a very attractive family of macrocyclic compounds with many potential supramolecular applications. Due to their well-established chemistry and many different synthetic strategies, enabling practically any derivatization of the basic skeleton, calixarenes are among the very popular building blocks used for the design and construction of various receptors, sensors and other sophisticated supramolecular systems. Regio- and/or stereo-selective derivatization of calixarenes currently represents a very extensive set of reactions, the overview of which would fill many thick books. Therefore, this review deals with only a small part of the above-mentioned reactions, specifically describes possible ways of bridging the upper rim of calixarenes, often leading to interesting rigidified structures, and also briefly mentions the potential use of these compounds.

Abstract
We describe the first gold(I)-catalysed intramolecular hydroarylation of alkynes for the straightforward synthesis of inherently chiral calix[4]arenes. This step- and atom-economical approach, which exploits a formal meta-functionalisation of the calix[4]arene macrocycle, is able to deliver an ample family of N-heterocyclic, chiral compounds in high yields and functional group tolerance.

Abstract
The formation of inherently chiral calix[4]arenes by the intramolecular cyclization approach suffers from a limited number of suitable substrates for these reactions. Here, we report an easy way to prepare one class of such compounds: calixquinolines, which can be obtained by the reaction of aldehydes with easily accessible aminocalix[4]arenes in acidic conditions (Doebner-Miller reaction). The synthetic procedure represents a very straightforward approach to the inherently chiral macrocyclic systems. The complexation studies revealed the ability of these compounds to complex quaternary ammonium salts with different stoichiometries depending on the guest molecules. At the same time, the ability of enantioselective complexation of chiral N-methylammonium salts was demonstrated.

Abstract
Calixarenes represent very popular building blocks in supramolecular chemistry. Compared to other macrocyclic families, they exhibit an almost infinite possibility of derivatization of the basic skeleton, which makes them ideal candidates for the design of new receptors or other functional systems. Although the chemistry of calixarenes is well established, there are still some substitution patterns that are unavailable or require a very lengthy synthetic approach. Among such synthetic challenges is the meta substitution of the aromatic skeleton (relative to phenolic oxygen), which, in conjunction with the 3D structure of calixarenes, leads to the inherent chirality and enables the synthesis of derivatives with a hitherto undescribed topology. This review deals with the current achievements in the meta substitution of calixarenes.

Abstract
Meta/meta- and meta/para-disubstituted organomercury calix[4]arenes in the cone conformation were transformed into corresponding amino derivatives. Acylation and subsequent intramolecular cyclization using the Bischler–Napieralski reaction provided, in the case of the meta/meta-series, double bridged calixarenes possessing seven membered rings on the upper rim. A similar synthetic strategy applied to meta/para-isomers allowed for the isolation of monobridged compounds bearing an additional trifluoroacetamido group located distally to seven-membered rings. Both series represent inherently chiral systems, which were successfully resolved using preparative chiral HPLC. The pure enantiomers exhibited a recognition ability towards selected chiral guest molecules as documented by the 1H NMR titration experiments. The absolute configuration of the phenyl-substituted enantiomer (meta/meta-) was confirmed by single crystal structure determination (X-ray). Calix[4]arenes bearing one or two bridges on the upper rim were prepared as novel inherently chiral derivatives potentially capable of chiral recognition.![]()

Abstract
Regioselective meta-mercuration followed by Pd-catalysed intramolecular bridging gave birth to a novel type of calixarene bearing a single bond bridge between the meta positions of the neighboring aromatic subunits. These bridged derivatives possess extremely distorted cavities that imply possible amended properties over common calix[4]arenes. This new type of calixarene reactivity can be documented by acid-/electrophile-mediated cleavage of the basic macrocyclic skeleton leading to open oligomeric structures-the behavior of which has never been observed before in classic calix[4]arenes bearing alkoxy groups on the lower rim.

Abstract
It is here demonstrated that the p-bromodienone route, previously reported for calix[4]arenes, is also effective for the functionalization of the calix[6]arene macrocycle. Thus, alcoholic O-nucleophiles can be introduced at the calix[6]arene exo rim. In addition, the reaction of a calix[6]arene p-bromodienone derivative with an actived aromatic substrate, such as resorcinol, led to the first example of a meta-functionalized, inherently chiral calix[6]arene derivative.

Abstract
Regioselective derivatization via an organomercury intermediate allowed for the introduction of carboxylic acid functionality into the meta position of the calix[4]arene skeleton. Intramolecular Friedel-Crafts cyclization led to a novel type of calixarene containing a ketone bridging moiety. Subsequent attack of the ketone by organometallic compounds occurred selectively from outside providing tertiary alcohols with the OH group oriented inside the cavity. These compounds can complex neutral molecules both in the solid state (X-ray) and in solution (NMR) using the cooperative effect of hydrogen bonding (OH) and CH-π interactions from within the cavity.

Abstract
Dimercuration of tetrapropoxy calix[4]arene followed by a reaction with isoamyl nitrite afforded dinitroso regioisomers with unique substitution patterns. The unusual conformational behaviour of these inherently chiral systems was revealed by the combination of dynamic NMR and residual dipolar coupling (RDC) techniques.
