Abstract
Due to the inert redox activity and high triplet energy, radical chemistry of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds usually requires prefunctionalization substrates, external oxidant, and high-energy UV light. Here, we report a visible-light-driven photocatalyst/cobaloxime system composed of a photosensitized energy transfer reaction (PEnT) and photoinduced electron transfer reaction (PET) and with an interrupted 6π-photocyclization/dehydrogenative aromatization in one pot to synthesize 10-phenanthrenols. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that fac-Ir(ppy)3 plays the dual roles of energy transfer catalysis for photocycloaddition via 1,2-biradical intermediates of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and photoredox/cobaloxime catalysis dehydrogenative aromatization of 1,4-biradical rather than the intermediates via 6π photocyclization in the tandem reaction. In contrast to previous well-established radical chemistry of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, we provide a new strategy for the activation of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds under visible light catalysis, affording a novel cyclization strategy with extremely high atom economy for the synthesis of 10-phenanthrenols.

Abstract
Hydroxymethylation of α-branched N-tert-butanesulfinyl ketimines with formaldehyde equivalents was developed to stereoselectively construct acyclic quaternary stereocenters bearing two sterically and electronically similar substituents. The stereoselective tBuOK-promoted α-deprotonation of acyclic ketimines allowed for the stereodefined formation of fully substituted aza-enolates, followed by facially selective C-C bond formation involving formaldehyde formed in situ, yielding α-hydroxymethylated products with precise stereocontrol.

Abstract
Lower-rim Cinchona anchored calix[4]arene cationic catalysts were developed for asymmetric Michael addition of acetylacetone to β-nitrostyrenes. The desired Michael adducts were formed with high yields and enantioselectivities. Density functional theory investigations throw light on the catalyst-substrate interaction and the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
Chiral Lewis acid catalyzed asymmetric formation of cyclobutanones from α-silyloxyacroleins and α-alkyl or α-aryl diazoesters has been developed. In the presence of a chiral oxazaborolidinium ion catalyst, various α-silyloxycyclobutanones possessing a chiral β-quaternary center were synthesized in high yield (up to 91%) with excellent enantio- and diastereoselectivity (up to 98% ee and up to >20:1 dr) through tandem cyclopropanation/semipinacol rearrangement. The synthetic potential of this method was illustrated by conversion of the product to various cyclic compounds such as γ-lactone, cyclobutanol, and cyclopentanone.

Abstract
The first highly enantioselective organocatalytic reaction employing 2-hydroxyacetophenones is disclosed, namely Michael-hemiacetalization reaction of 2-hydroxyacetophenones with enals. The combination of a primary amine and a secondary amine catalyst was found to be the best choice for this methodology. The products of this reaction were obtained in high enantio- and diastereoselectivities and were converted to a variety of biologically important γ-butyrolactones.

Abstract
Chiral iridium complexes modified by SEGPHOS catalyze the 2-propanol-mediated reductive coupling of branched allylic acetates 1a-1o with formaldehyde to form primary homoallylic alcohols 2a-2o with excellent control of regio- and enantioselectivity. These processes, which rely on enantiotopic π-facial discrimination of σ-allyliridium intermediates, represent the first examples of enantioselective formaldehyde C-C coupling beyond aldol addition.
