The Story of the Little Blue Box: A Tribute to Siegfried Hünig

The tetracationic cyclophane, cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene), also known as the little blue box, constitutes a modular receptor that has facilitated the discovery of many host-guest complexes and mechanically interlocked molecules during the past 35 years. Its versatility in binding small π-donors in its tetracationic state, as well as forming trisradical tricationic complexes with viologen radical cations in its doubly reduced bisradical dicationic state, renders it valuable for the construction of various stimuli-responsive materials. Since the first reports in 1988, the little blue box has been featured in over 500 publications in the literature. All this research activity would not have been possible without the seminal contributions carried out by Siegfried Hünig, who not only pioneered the syntheses of viologen-containing cyclophanes, but also revealed their rich redox chemistry in addition to their ability to undergo intramolecular π-dimerization. This Review describes how his pioneering research led to the design and synthesis of the little blue box, and how this redox-active host evolved into the key component of molecular shuttles, switches, and machines.

An azine-containing bispillar[5]arene-based multi-stimuli responsive supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel for effective adsorption of rhodamine B

An azine-containing bispillar[5]arene was designed and synthesized by the reaction of aldehyde functionalized-pillar[5]arene and hydrazine. Then, a novel bispillar[5]arene-based supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane has been successfully prepared via host-guest interaction. Interestingly, by taking advantage of the host-guest interactions, π-π stacking interactions and hydrogen bonding interactions, the multi-stimuli-responsive gel-sol phase transitions of such a supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel were successfully realized under different stimuli, such as acid, temperature, concentration, and competitive guests. Moreover, this supramolecular system could effectively adsorb dye molecule rhodamine B. It is worth noting that this supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel prepared in cyclohexanol solution (BP5·G·C) could be used as an adsorbent material for adsorbing rhodamine B with adsorption efficiency of 98.4%. Meanwhile, the adsorption efficiency was 97.6% for supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel prepared in DMSO-H2O (v : v, 8 : 2) binary solution (BP5·G·D), also indicating the superior adsorption effect of BP5·G·D toward the dye molecule rhodamine B.

Synthesis, structure, and anion binding of functional oxacalix[4]arenes

Oxacalix[4]arenes obtained from the highly efficient, one-pot S_NAr reaction were post-macrocyclization functionalized through the reduction of nitro groups and hydrolysis of the ester groups to obtain several derivatives of desired solubility. The difficulties in basic hydrolysis of ester groups were overcome via developing an acid hydrolysis method for tert-butyl ester derivatives of this class. The synthesis of symmetrical oxacalix[4]arenes from an unsymmetrically substituted precursor was also explored via a multiple step fragment coupling approach. Compounds 17 & 18 adopted 1,3-alternate conformations in the solid state as most oxacalix[4]arenes did, and a chair (zigzag) conformation was revealed for tetraamido oxacalix[4]arene (6a) by X-ray single crystal analysis. The tetraureido oxacalixarene (7) showed strong association towards various anions such as F^-, Cl^-, Br^-, I^-, Ac^-, and HSO₄^- with a 1 : 1 stoichiometry as revealed by ¹H NMR analysis and UV-vis measurements.

Novel oxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines with thermally activated delayed fluorescence and aggregation-induced emission properties

New kinds of oxacalixarenes based on the triazine moiety have been synthesized, which showed highly twisted conformations and small ΔEST, as well as temperature-dependent transient PL decay curves, indicating the excellent thermally activated delayed fluorescence properties. Moreover, the oxacalixarenes also exhibited apparent aggregation-induced emission properties in THF/H2O mixtures.

A Shape-Persistent Cryptand for Capturing Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

A shape-persistent cryptand 1, containing two face-to-face oriented electron-deficient 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine units separated by approximately 7 Å, and bridged by two rigid 1,8-naphthyridine linkers and a pentaethylene oxide loop, is created for capturing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Cryptand 1 formed 1:1 complexes with PAH guest molecules, such as phenanthrene (6), anthracene (7), pyrene (8), triphenylene (9), and tetraphene (10). The single-crystal structure of complex 6⊂1 revealed that 6 was included in the cavity of 1 via face-to-face π···π stacking interactions. Soaking crystalline 1 in a toluene solution of anthracene resulted in anthracene from the toluene solution being picked up by the crystalline solid of 1.
