Abstract
Described herein is a novel Brønsted acid catalyzed intramolecular hydroalkoxylation/Claisen rearrangement, allowing the practical and atom-economic synthesis of a range of valuable spirolactams from readily available ynamides in generally good to excellent yields with excellent diastereoselectivities and broad substrate scope. Importantly, an unexpected dearomatization of nonactivated arenes and heteroaromatic compounds is involved in this tandem sequence. Moreover, an asymmetric version of this tandem cyclization was also achieved by efficient kinetic resolution by chiral phosphoric acid catalysis. In addition, the [3,3]-rearrangement is shown to be kinetically preferred over the related [1,3]-rearrangement by theoretical calculations.

Abstract
Arene dearomatization is a straightforward method for converting an aromatic feedstock into functionalized carbocycles. Enantioselective dearomatizations of chemically inert arenes, however, are quite limited and underexplored relative to those of phenols and indoles. We developed a method for diazo-free generation of silver-carbene species from an ynamide and applied it to the dearomatization of nonactivated arenes. Transiently generated norcaradiene could be trapped by intermolecular [4 + 2] cycloaddition, synthesizing polycycles with five consecutive stereogenic centers. This protocol constitutes the first highly enantioselective reaction based on the diazo-free generation of silver-carbene species. Mechanistic investigations revealed a dearomatization followed by two different classes of pericyclic reactions, as well as the origin of the chemo- and enantioselectivity.

Abstract
For the selective synthesis of N-cyano sulfilimines, we have developed a new method based on the soft-soft interaction between thionium ion electrophiles and cyanonitrene nucleophiles. The stable thionium ion was successfully obtained by oxidative dearomatization using phenyliodine (III) diacetate (PIDA) in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The sulfur imination reactions were tolerant to a wide range of functional groups and exhibited high selectivities and excellent yields. The existence of thionium ion intermediates was confirmed by ultraviolet/visible (UV/vis) spectroscopy and 1H NMR experiments.

Abstract
The copper(II) trifluoromethanesulfonate-catalyzed Pummerer reaction of β-ketosulfoxides with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds or π-nucleophiles such as phenols, arenes, and tetraallylsilane is reported. The mild conditions provide an efficient entry to a novel class of polysubstituted 3-alkylthiofuran and polysubstituted 3-thiobenzofuran heterocycles from readily available materials.

Abstract
We report asymmetric dearomatization of phenols using Ag carbenoids from α-diazoacetamides. The Ag catalyst promoted intramolecular dearomatization of phenols, whereas a Rh or Cu catalyst caused C-H insertion and a Büchner reaction. Studies indicated Ag carbenoids have a carbocation-like character, making their behavior and properties unique. Highly enantioselective transformations using Ag carbenoids have not been reported. We achieved a Ag carbenoid-mediated chemo- and highly enantioselective phenol dearomatization with substrate generality for the first time.

Abstract
A novel and direct oxidative spirocyclization of arylpropiolamides with sulfonylhydrazides leading to 3-sulfonated azaspiro[4,5]trienones has been developed under metal-free conditions. The reaction is performed in a tandem manner constituted by the sequential sulfonylation of alkynes, ipso-carbocyclization, dearomatization, hydration, and oxidation processes, providing a convenient and efficient approach to various sulfonated azaspiro[4,5] trienones of biological importance.

Abstract
A simple and efficient thiol-mediated addition of ketones to aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes is reported. This thermodynamically controlled Pummerer/aldol reaction, which can tolerate both moisture and protic functional groups, provides a direct entry to syn-β-thioketones in high chemo- and regioselectivity. Mechanistic studies revealed that selective transformation of the aldehyde to an electrophilic thionium ion species concurrent with the generation of a nucleophilic vinyl sulfide coupling partner from the ketone is imposing cross-coupling over dimerization.

Abstract
The silyl enol ether derivatives of ketones or esters tethered by a hydrocarbon or ether linkage to the 3-position of a pyridine ring undergo dearomatising nucleophilic attack on the ring once it is activated (as an acylpyridinium species) by the addition of methyl chloroformate. The bicyclic dihydropyridine products are in some cases unstable, but may be isolated after hydrogenation as fused bicyclic piperidines.

Abstract
Highly coloured Janovsky complexes have been known for over 120 years, being used in many colourimetric analytical procedures. In this present study, two novel and stable nitrocyclohexadienyl spirobicyclic, zwitterionic Janovsky anionic hydantoin sigma-complexes, rac-1,3-diisopropyl-6-nitro-2,4-dioxo-1,3-diazaspiro[4.5]deca-6,9-dien-8-ylideneazinate, ammonium internal salt (1) and 1,3-diisopropyl-2,4-dioxo-1,3-diazaspiro[4.5]deca-6,9-dien-8-ylideneazinate, ammonium internal salt (2) have been prepared and characterised by NMR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and UV/visible methods. For the p-mononitro-substituted complex (2), we discovered chemical exchange behaviour using 1D saturation transfer and 2D exchange spectroscopy (EXSY) (1)H NMR techniques. The coalescence temperature was determined to be 62 degrees C in d(3)-acetonitrile. Analysis of these data provided a Gibbs free energy of activation, DeltaG double dagger, of + 67 kJ mole(-1), a rate constant, k, coalescence of 220 Hz and an equilibrium constant, K(eqm), of 0.98 as estimates of the exchange process in this solvent. Of the two mechanisms proposed for this fluxional behaviour, ring opening to a substituted benzene or proton exchange, a further theoretical modelling study of 1D (1)H NMR spectra was able to confirm that simple proton exchange between the two nitrogen sites of the hydantoin ring provided an accurate simulation of the observed experimental evidence. Interestingly, the o,p-dinitro-substituted complex (1) did not show any chemical exchange behaviour up to 150 degrees C in d(3)-acetonitrile (to 75 degrees C) and d(6)-dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Molecular modelling at the MM2 level suggests that steric collisions of an N-acyl isopropyl substituent of the hydantoin ring with the ortho-nitro group of the spirofused cyclohexadienyl ring prevents the proposed proton exchange mechanism occurring in this case.

Abstract
The reaction of thiols with glyoxamides provides a convenient method for the generation of thionium ions and the initiation of Pummerer-type reactions. When the glyoxamides contain tethered aromatic nucleophiles, N-heterocycles are formed by a thionium ion cyclisation. The scope and mechanism of the connective Pummerer-type process has been investigated using a range of thiols, Lewis acids and both mono- and bis-glyoxamides. The utility of the process has been illustrated in a synthesis of the indoloquinoline natural product, neocryptolepine.
