Abstract
Among several anions, iodide (I- ) ions play a crucial role in human biological activities. In it's molecular form (I2 ), iodine is utilized for several industrial applications such as syntheses of medicines, fabric dyes, food additives, solar cell electrolytes, catalysts, and agrochemicals. The excess or deficiency of I- ions in the human body and environmental samples have certain consequences. Therefore, the selective and sensitive detection of I- ions in the human body and environment is vital for monitoring their overall profile. Amongst various analytical techniques for the estimation of I- ions, optical-chemical sensing possesses the merits of high sensitivity, selectivity, and utilizing the least amount of sensing materials. The distinctive aims of this manuscript are (i) To comprehensively review the development of optical chemical sensors (fluorescent & colorimetric) reported between 2001-2021 using organic fluorescent molecules, supramolecular materials, conjugated polymers, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). (ii) To illustrate the design and synthetic strategies to create specific binding and high affinity of I- ions which could help minimize negative consequences associated with its large size and high polarizability. (iii) The challenges associated with sensitivity and selectivity of I- ions in aqueous and real samples. The probable future aspects concerning the optical chemical detection of I- ions have also been discussed in detail.

Abstract
The human body requires iodine to develop and maintain proper metabolic balance. Worldwide, iodine deficiency affects two billion people and is the leading preventable cause of intellectual disability. Small amounts of iodine are needed for good health. However, large doses can eventually cause iodide goitre, hypothyroidism or myxedema. Children are especially sensitive to the effects of iodine. Because humans can be exposed to iodide via several different food chains, the development of on-site, real-time and reliable sensors for iodide is of great interest to ensure early diagnosis and improve management. We propose here a simple and low cost, yet sensitive and selective fluorescent ‘turn-off-on’ assay for rapid determination of iodide based on a combined carbon nanodots (CDs) and Hg2+ system. The fluorescence of CDs that was quenched by Hg2+ was restored and ‘turned on’ in the presence of iodide, which triggered a competitive reaction among CDs, Hg2+ and iodide. The recovered fluorescence intensity varied linearly with the concentration of iodide in the range of 0.05–5 μmol L–1, with a limit of detection as low as 46 nmol L–1. This approach shows excellent selectivity for iodine over the other anions.

Abstract
A simple and sensitive chemiluminescence assay for iodide (I(-)) detection was reported, which was based on iodide extracting Hg(2+) from DNA featuring a stem-loop structure containing T-Hg(2+)-T. Specifically, Hg(2+) induced random coiled G-rich single-strand DNA to form a stem-loop structure containing T-Hg(2+)-T. Because the binding of Hg(2+) and I(-) is much stronger than that of Hg(2+) and thymine (T), I(-) could extract Hg(2+) from the stem-loop structure, releasing the DNA, which then bound with K(+) and transformed into a K(+)-stabilized G-quadruplex (with hemin as a cofactor), which catalyzed the H(2)O(2)-mediated oxidation of luminol. The produced chemiluminescence as a sensing signal was applied to sensitively and selectively detect iodide with a detection limit of 12 nM. This system exhibited the first DNAzyme-based iodide sensor. Finally, the sensor was successfully applied for iodide detection in real lake water samples.

Abstract
In this contribution, we have synthesized series of 1-ethyl-3,5-bis[2-(aryl)ethenyl]-1H-indole based derivatives with different functional groups using Wadsworth-Emmons coupling. The sensing ability of the receptors has been studied for halides like tetrabutylammonium fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide and bisulphate by UV-vis spectroscopy methods. In THF solution, compound A-E exhibits excellent selectivity with iodide ions over the other ions like tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBABr), tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBACl), tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF) and tetrabutylammonium bisulphate (TBAHSO(4)). The indole cores were observed effectively and selectively recognized biologically important iodide was reported. Significant absorption change was observed only for tetrabutylammonium iodide and no change with other anions. The absorption spectra indicated the formation of complex between host and guest is in 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. The association constants of A-E for iodide ions were found to be 3.2 × 10(4) M(-1), 3.9 × 10(4) M(-1), 4.2 × 10(3) M(-1), 2.9 × 10(3) M(-1) and 2.14 × 10(3) M(-1), respectively.
