Abstract
Lysophosphatidic acids (LPA) are key biomarkers for several physiological processes, the monitoring of which can provide insights into the host's health. Common lab-based techniques for their detection are cumbersome, expensive, and necessitate specialized personnel to operate. LPA-sensitive fluorescent probes have been described, albeit for nonaqueous conditions, which impedes their use in biological matrices. In this paper, we explore in detail the influence of structure on the extent of aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching using specially synthesized styrylpyridinium dyes bearing structural adaptations to bestow them enhanced affinity toward LPA in aqueous media. Spectroscopic investigations supported by time-resolved fluorimetry revealed the contribution of excimer formation to the fluorescence quenching mechanism displayed by the fluorescent probes. Experimental observations of the influence of structure on detection sensitivity were supported by DFT calculations.

Abstract
Collisional intermolecular interactions between excited states form short-lived dimers and complexes that lead to the emergence of excimer/exciplex emission of lower energy, a phenomenon which must be differentiated from the photoluminescence (PL) arising from the monomeric molecules. Although the utilization of noncovalent bonding interactions, leading to the generation of excimer/exciplex PL, has been investigated extensively, precise control of the aggregates and their persistence at very low concentrations remains a rare phenomenon. In the search for a fresh approach, we sought to obtain exciplex PL from permanent structures by incorporating anthracene moieties into pyridinium-containing mechanically interlocked molecules. Beyond the optical properties of the anthracene moieties, their π-extended nature enforces [π···π] stacking that can overcome the Coulombic repulsion between the pyridinium units, affording an efficient synthesis of an octacationic homo[2]catenane. Notably, upon increasing the ionic strength by adding tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate, the catenane yield increases significantly as a result of the decrease in Coulombic repulsions between the pyridinium units. Although the ground-state photophysical properties of the free cyclophane and the catenane are similar and show a charge-transfer band at ∼455 nm, their PL characters are distinct, denoting different excited states. The cyclophane emits at ∼562 nm (quantum yield ϕF = 3.6%, emission lifetime τs = 3 ns in MeCN), which is characteristic of a disubstituted anthracene-pyridinium linker. By contrast, the catenane displays an exciplex PL at low concentration (10-8 M) with an emission band centered on 650 nm (ϕF = 0.5%, τs = 14 ns) in MeCN and at 675 nm in aqueous solution. Live-cell imaging performed in MIAPaCa-2 prostate cancer cells confirmed that the catenane exciplex emission can be detected at micromolar concentrations.

Abstract
Fluorescence enhancement on aggregation for π-conjugates linked with pyridyl ring has been established as a part of widely studied smart organic functional materials. Therefore, the photophysical features in the solution and aggregate states for such compounds remain impressive. In this work, we synthesized three series of photostable unsymmetrical aryl-substituted anthracenyl π-conjugates linked to pyridyl ring with a variation of the position of a pyridyl-N atom and examined the difference in the photophysical properties preferably in the aggregate state. The so-called "aggregation-induced emission (AIE)" behavior was discernible for the 2- and 4-pyridyl- but not 3-pyridyl-10-p-tolyl or mesityl-substituted π-conjugates. Curiously, a variation of the position of a pyridyl-N atom does not solely control the AIE phenomenon for 10-thiophenyl-substituted π-conjugates, where all of the isomers are found to be AIE-active. Hence, the dissimilarity in emission behavior in the aggregate state is governed by the position of N-atom for pyridine and also the substituent at the 10th position of the anthracyl ring. The mechanistic insight behind these observations is demonstrated by concentration-dependent fluorescence studies, time-resolved fluorescence, single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies (largely supportive to understand the molecular structure and packing in the aggregate), and average particle size measurement of the aggregates and partly by the density functional theory studies for a few representative molecules.

Abstract
Dual functional activity by the same organic-inorganic hybrid material toward selective metal ion detection and its adsorption has drawn more attraction in the field of sensing. However, most of the hybrid materials in the literature are either for sensing studies or adsorption studies. In this manuscript, a fluorescent active hybrid material SiO2 @PBATPA is synthesized by covalent coupling of anthracene-based chelating ligand N,N'-(propane-1,3-diyl) bis(N-(anthracen-9-ylmethyl)-2-((3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl) amino) acetamide) (PBATPA) within the mesopores of newly synthesized cubic mesoporous silica. The synthetic strategy is designed to form an exclusively intramolecular excimer on a solid surface, which is then used as a sensory tool for selective detection of metal ions through fluorescence quenching by the destruction of excimer upon metal ion binding. The dual functions of sensing and adsorption studies show selectivity toward Hg2+ and Cu2+ among various metal ions with detection limits of 37 and 6 ppb, respectively, and adsorption capacities of 482 and 246 mg g-1 , respectively. This material can be used as a sensory cum adsorbent material in real food samples and living organisms such as the brine shrimp Artemia salina without any toxic effects from the material.

Abstract
Herein, density functional theory (DFT) computations were performed to investigate the discrete dimer of a mono-substituted anthracene derivative (2-TA-AN), which exhibited highly efficient pure excimer fluorescence in its crystal form. As a more practical model, its geometry, potential energy curve and excited state property were systematically calculated to better understand the excimer formation process and photophysical properties. The compressed excimer geometry is responsible for the highly efficient excimer emission, arising from the enhanced rigidity that greatly suppresses its non-radiative vibrations. Potential energy curves along three directions reveal the non-uniqueness of excimer formation along the long axis of anthracene, which is in a good agreement with the experimental findings. Upon decreasing the displacement, the intermonomer charge-transfer (CT) component gradually increased towards an approximately equivalent hybridization with the locally-emissive (LE) state of the monomer during the formation of the excimer. The excimer emission wavelength versus intermonomer CT content shows a similar trend along the three directions, revealing a turning point related to the essential transition of the excited state properties from the LE of the monomer to the HLCT of the excimer. The present results will contribute to the better understanding of the structure-property relationships in excimer formation and photophysical properties.

Abstract
We designed a water-soluble guanidinium-modified calix[5]arene to target lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), an ideal biomarker for early diagnosis of ovarian and other gynecologic cancers, achieving binding on the nanomolar level. An indicator displacement assay, coupled with differential sensing, enabled ultrasensitive and specific detection of LPA. Moreover, we show that using a calibration line, the LPA concentration in untreated serum can be quantified in the biologically relevant low μM range with a detection limit of 1.7 μM. The reported approach is feasible for diagnosing ovarian and other gynecologic cancers, particularly at their early stages.

Abstract
Herein, we report an anthracene-based material, 2-(anthracen-9-yl)thianthrene (), whose crystal exhibits excimer fluorescence with an unexpected high luminous efficiency (up to 80%) and long lifetime (163.75 ns), due to pairwise anthracene stacking. These results will update the traditional view that excimers are poorly efficient in photoluminescence.

Abstract
The strong light emission of organic luminogens in the aggregated state is essential to their applications as optoelectronic materials with good performance. In this review, with respect to the aggregation-induced emission and room-temperature phosphorescence luminogens, the important role of molecular packing modes is highlighted. As demonstrated in the selected examples, the molecular packing status in the aggregate state is affected by many factors, including the molecular configurations, the inherent electronic properties, the special functional groups, and so on. With the consideration of all these parameters, the strong fluorescence and phosphorescence in the aggregated state could be achieved in the rationally designed organic luminogens, providing some guidance for the further development.

Abstract
The aim of this contribution is to provide an introduction and a brief summary of the principle of fluorescence molecular sensors specific to inorganic phosphate (Pi) and inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) as well as their applications. In our introduction we describe the impact of both Pi and PPi in the living organism and in the environment, followed by a description of the principle of fluorescence molecular sensors and the sensing mechanism in solution. We then focus on exciting research which has emerged in recent years on the development of fluorescent sensors specific to Pi and PPi, categorized by chemical interactions between the sensor and the target molecule, such as hydrogen bonding, coordination chemistry, displacement assay, aggregation induced emission or quenching, and chemical reactions.

Abstract
Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA, cutoff values ≥ 1.5 μM) is an effective biomarker for early stage ovarian cancer. The development of selective probes for LPA detection is therefore critical for early clinical diagnosis. Although current methods have been developed for the detection of LPA in solution, they cannot be used for tracking LPA in vivo. Here, we report a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe that can selectively respond to LPA based on polarity-sensitive emission at a very low detection limit of 0.5 μM in situ. This probe exhibits a marked increase of fluorescence at 720 nm upon binding to LPA, allowing the direct visualization of LPA in vitro and in vivo without interference from other biomolecules. Moreover, the probe containing two arginine-glycine-aspartic acid units can be efficiently taken up by cancer cells based on an αvβ3 integrin receptor targeting mechanism. It also exhibits excellent biocompatibility and high pH stability in live cells and in vivo. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and flow cytometric imaging of SKOV-3 cells have confirmed that our probe can be used to image LPA in live cells. In particular, its NIR turn-on fluorescence can be used to effectively monitor LPA imaging in a SKOV-3 tumor-bearing mouse model. Our probe may pave the way for the detection of cancer-related biomarkers and even for early stage cancer diagnosis.

Abstract
"Aggregation-caused signal change" is a well-established mechanism by now and has been widely used as the basis for optical probe and sensor development. Compared to aggregation, its reverse process, disaggregation, has received much less attention and is not properly discussed in the literature so far. With the less established paradigm or mechanism, although some of the reported sensors and probes seem to work through disaggregation phenomena, the proper interpretation of the results and applying the concept to novel probe development is seriously hampered. The process from aggregation to disaggregation generally causes a recovery or enhancement of fluorescence signals, and thus provides an interesting new path to design "turn-on" probes. This tutorial review will provide the balanced comparison between aggregation and disaggregation mechanism, and focuses on the less explored advantages of "disaggregation" as a novel sensing mechanism and its recent applications in probe development.

Abstract
3-Phenylthiophene-based water-soluble copolythiophenes (CPT9) were designed for colorimetric and fluorometric detection of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) based on electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic interaction, and hydrogen bonding. Other negatively charged species gave nearly no interference, and the detection limit reached to 0.6 μM, which is below the requisite detection limits for LPA in human plasma samples. The appealing performance of CPT9 was demonstrated to originate from the multipoint interaction-induced conformational change of conjugated backbone and weakened electron transfer effect. To our best knowledge, this is the first polythiophene based optical sensor which displays emission peak red-shift followed with fluorescence enhancement.

Abstract
Aggregation plays an integral role in multivalent protein-carbohydrate interactions, Alzheimer's and other amyloid-related diseases, and infection response. Efforts to apply controlled aggregation in toxin sensors have been made. We have developed a label-free intrinsic fluorescence lifetime assay that uniquely can monitor aggregation processes in real time without interference from precipitation. Fluorescence decay curves were measured with high precision at 1 s time intervals following addition of a glycodendrimer to a lectin-containing solution. Changes in the fluorescence intensity and lifetime signified formation of complexes. However, these changes were not associated with the initial lectin-sugar binding events. Rather, they appeared to be caused by clustering and subsequent conformational rearrangement of the lectins. Studies were conducted with mannose-functionalized polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers of the second through sixth generations and Concanavalin A. The apparent rate constant, when expressed on a per-mannose basis, increased with dendrimer generation, particularly in going from the fourth to the sixth generation. However, the identical fluorescence decay waveforms for saturating amounts of dendrimer suggested that all of the glycodendrimer generations studied reach a comparable state of aggregation. Although self-quenching of tryptophan resonances that was induced by clustering was monitored in this study, the reported method is not limited to such and is viable for numerous binding studies.
