Abstract
Reductive cyclization of trans,trans- and trans,cis-isomers of the 2-CF3-substituted 3-nitro-4-phenacylchromanes with Zn-based reductive systems, depending on the conditions, affords 4-CF3-substituted 1,3a,4,9b-tetrahydrochromeno[3,4-b]pyrrole 3-oxides, 1,3a,4,9b-tetrahydrochromeno[3,4-b]pyrroles, or 1,2,3,3a,4,9b-hexahydrochromeno[3,4-b]pyrroles in good yields without changing the relative configuration of the pyran ring. A similar process involving the 2-CCl3-substituted 3-nitro-4-phenacylchromanes is accompanied by reductive dehalogenation to form the corresponding 4-dichloromethyl-substituted fused chromanes along with the 3-(2-hydroxyaryl)-2-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-5-phenyl-2H-pyrroline 1-oxides as pyran ring opening products. The structure and relative configuration of the obtained products was reliably confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis and 2D NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
Dehydroabietane-type bifunctional organocatalysts derived from rosane-type diterpenes of dehydroabietic acid (DHAA) and dehydroabietylamine (DA) have been utilized in a wide variety of highly enantioselective reactions. Since one well-documented review exclusively reported on the development of terpene-derived bifunctional thioureas in asymmetric organocatalysis in 2013, fragmentary progress on the dehydroabietane-type bifunctional thioureas and squaramides has been mentioned in other reviews. In this mini-review, we systematically analyze and reorganize the published literature on dehydroabietane-type bifunctional organocatalysts in the recent decade according to the type of catalysts. Our aim is for this review to provide helpful research information and serve as a foundation for further design and application of rosin-based organocatalysts.

Abstract
Abietic acid and its derivatives have broadly been used in fine chemicals and are renewable resources. Its inherent chiral rigid tricyclic phenanthrene skeleton is unique. Its utilities in asymmetric catalysis remain to be explored. A series new amide-type chiral quaternary ammoniums bearing dehydroabietylamine were designed, and prepared by two convenient steps. Acylation of dehydroabietylamine with bromoacetyl chloride afforded amide holding bromoacetyl group in higher yields using triethyl amine as base. Subsequent quaternization reaction gave the desired amide-type chiral quaternary ammoniums. The new chiral quaternary ammoniums can be used as phase-transfer catalyst (PTC) for the transition metal-catalysed alkynylation of isatin derivatives.

Abstract
Reductive amination of carbonyl compounds with primary amines is a well-established synthetic methodology for the selective production of unsymmetrically substituted secondary and tertiary amines. From the industrial and green chemistry perspective, it is attractive to combine reductive amination with the synthesis of primary amines in a single one-pot catalytic process. In this regard, nitro compounds, which are readily available and inexpensive feedstocks, received much attention as convenient precursors to primary amines in such processes. Although the direct reductive coupling of nitro compounds with aldehydes/ketones to give secondary and tertiary amines has been known since the 1940's, due to the development of highly efficient and selective non-noble metal-based catalysts a breakthrough in this area was made in the last decade. In this short overview, recent progress in the methodology of the reductive amination with nitro compounds is summarized together with applications to the synthesis of bioactive amines and heterocycles. Remaining challenges in this field are also analyzed.

Abstract
For almost 20 years, thioureas have been experiencing a renaissance of interest with the emerged development of asymmetric organocatalysts. Due to their relatively high acidity and strong hydrogen bond donor capability, they differ significantly from ureas and offer, appropriately modified, great potential as organocatalysts, chelators, drug candidates, etc. The review focuses on the family of chiral thioureas, presenting an overview of the current state of knowledge on their synthesis and selected applications in stereoselective synthesis and drug development.

Abstract
A rosin-derived bifunctional squaramide catalyzed asymmetric Michael addition of malononitrile with chalcones was discovered. This protocol provides a methodology for the facile synthesis of chiral γ-cyano carbonyl compounds in high yields and enantioselectivities (up to 99% yield and 90% ee) with a lower catalyst loading (0.3 mol%). The predominant R-configured adducts were obtained by this organocatalystic reaction, according to the experimental findings.

Abstract
A new class of tyrosyl-DNA phosphodiesterase 1 (TDP1) inhibitors was found among resin acid derivatives. Several novel ureas and thioureas derived from dehydroabietylamine were synthesized and tested for TDP1 inhibition. The synthesized compounds showed IC50 values in the range of 0.1 to 3.7 μM and demonstrated low cytotoxicity against the human tumor cell lines U-937, U-87MG, MDA-MB, SK-Mel8, A-549, MCF7, T98G, and SNB19. Several compounds showed enhancement of the cytotoxic activity of the alkylating agent temozolomide, which is used as a first line therapy against glioblastoma (GBM), in the GBM cell lines U-87MG and SNB19.

Abstract
The β-selective asymmetric addition of γ-butyrolactam with cyclic imino esters catalyzed by a bifunctional chiral tertiary amine has been developed, which provides an efficient access to optically active β-position functionalized pyrrolidin-2-one derivatives in both high yield and enantioselectivity (up to 78% yield and 95 : 5 er). This is the first catalytic method to access chiral β-functionalized pyrrolidin-2-one via a direct organocatalytic approach.

Abstract
A new primary amine catalyst for the asymmetric α-hydroxylation and α-fluorination of α-branched aldehydes is described. The products of the title transformations are generated in excellent yields with high enantioselectivities. Both processes can be performed within short reaction times and on gram scale. The similarity in results obtained in both reactions, combined with computational evidence, implies a common basis for stereoinduction and the possibility of a general catalytic mechanism for α-functionalizations. Promising initial results in α-amination and α-chlorination reactions support this hypothesis.

Abstract
Research disclosed since the demonstration of the first examples of primary amine-thiourea organocatalysis in 2006 has shown that primary amine-based thioureas can successfully catalyze a diverse variety of highly enantioselective transformations providing a wide range of versatile organic compounds. Recent remarkable progress with these chiral catalysts is summarized in this review.

Abstract
The stereoselective synthesis of trisubstituted 2-trifluoromethyl pyrrolidines by asymmetric Michael addition/hydrogenative cyclization is described. The direct organocatalytic addition of 1,1,1-trifluoromethylketones to nitroolefins proceeds under mild reaction conditions and low catalyst loadings to provide Michael adducts in high yield with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivity. Catalytic hydrogenation of the Michael adducts stereoselectively generates 2-trifluoromethylated pyrrolidines bearing three contiguous stereocenters. A stereospecific route to epimeric 2-trifluoromethyl pyrrolidines from a common intermediate is described.

Abstract
Skeleton in the closet: The title reaction enables the development of the first catalytic β,γ-selective Diels-Alder [4+2] annulation of α,β-unsaturated γ-butyrolactams (see scheme; Boc=tert-butoxycarbonyl, Ts=4-toluenesulfonyl). This process provides a direct method for the enantioselective construction of bi- or tricyclic dihydropyranopyrrolidin-2-one skeletons in only one step.
